Be it known that I, OHAUNOEY ALvEN MUR- RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of Uinta and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, oi which the following is a specification, refer,- ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to Suspenders, and more particularly to that class having selfadjusting extensible or elastic shoulder-straps, said cord and straps being adjustably connected at one end of the straps and adjustably and removably connected at the other end of said straps by means of attachable and detachable devices hereinafter more fully set forth, one of the objects being to provide a device of the character described that shall be simple in construction, durable, and automatic in operation and adjustment.

A further object of my lnvention is to provide a device of the character described wherein the strain upon the buttons of the garment to which said device is attached shall be relieved of extra tension or strain by reason of the easy and ready adjustment of parts connected with said buttons and also to provide a device wherein the strain upon all parts shall be 'equally distributed, the parts being so constructed that eXtra strain at any point of the device is immediately relieved by the yielding of other parts.

Other objects and advantages of my said invention, as well as the structural features by means of which said objects are attained, will be made clear by an examination of the specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding portions throughout, and in which- Figure l is a rear elevation of the entire device, showing a loop at the upper end ofthe fastener-clasp as a form of connection between the fastener-clasp and the shoulder-strap. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the fastener-clasp and showing a .hook at the upper end as a modified form of connection between the shoulder-strap and the fastener-clasp. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the outer frame or casing of the fastener-clasp. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the spring. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section of the fastener-clasp. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the elastic-strapadjusting buckle. Fig. 7 is a rear elevation of a series of pulleys constituting a quadruple pulley-frame, and Fig. 8 is a detail of one of the pulleys.

1 designates an elastic shoulder-strap connected by the link or support 2 with a fastener-clasp 3. This clasp is comprised of an outer casing or housing 4, formed of one piece of metal, and has also an upwardly-projecting loop 5, aording means whereby the shoulderstrap and clasp are connected, the link 2 passing through the loop, as shown in Fig'. 1.

In Figs. 2, 3, and 5 a slightly-modified form of connection between the fastener-clasp and shoulder-strap is shown, which modification consists of the hook 5 in lieu of the loop 5, (shown in Fig. 1,) and by this mode it will be observed the fastener-clasp and shoulder-strap may be removably connected. The outer housing or casing 4 is also providedwith a kerf or aperture 6 therein and with a short inwardly-projecting lug 7, formed by the cutting away of parts to form the aperture 6, and a corresponding inwardly-projecting lug 8, formed by the cutting away of parts, said lugs being arranged opposite each other, or approximately so.

9 designates a leaf-spring formed somewhat in the shape of a W and adapted to tit within the case or frame 4, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said spring having kerfs or apertures 10 therein with which said lugs 7 and 8 are adapted to engage when the spring 9 is placed in position within the case or frame 4, thereby holding said spring securely therein.

11 designates a ring, having mounted thereon the pulley-frames 12, constituting a quadruple frame. Each frame carries a pulley- . wheel 13, and 14 designates similar pulleyframes connected by the supports 15 with the shoulder-straps 1.

16 designates a cord made of leather or some other strong and durable material and carrying the straps or supports 17, which are slidably mounted thereon at the upper end and having the lower end adapted to support the garment on which said invention is employed by means of buttons attached thereto. This cord 16 also engages with the pulley-wheels mounted in the pulley-frames 14 and likewise with a plurality of the pulley-wheels Vcarried bythe frames 12,- one of said pulleys 12 depending from the ring 11 to form a support IOO for a strap 18, connecting with lthe buttons,

which the cord 16 is adapted to pass. (See Fig. l.)

21 designates a buckle and guard comprised of the frame 22, on which is pivotally mounted aleaf' 23, having parts cut away and serrated to form the points 24 and being provided with an ear on each side of said serrations to form the bearings 25. Slidably mounted on said frame is a leaf 26, against which the points 24 impinge the suspenderstrap 1 when the leaf 23 is pushed out into position, said leaf 26 preferably comprising one piece of material having ears 27 formed integral therewith and serving as bearing by means of which said leaf is slidably mounted upon said frame 22, there being sufficient space left between said leaf 26 and the lower part of the frame to admit of the passage of one end of the shoulder-strap, which is folded upon itself and the end secured in order that the buckle may be held in operative position.

To remove the front end of the strap 1 from the cord 16, pressure is exerted on the lower projecting points of the leaf-spring 9, so that said spring is released from contact with the lateral points 7, which project through the openings 10 in said spring, whereupon the spring may be drawn down out of the casing or frame 4. To connect the end of the strap with the cord, the upper end of the spring 9 is inserted in the opening in the lower end of the casing 1 and pushed upward, the sides of the spring contacting with two of the sides of the casing, and consequently force is exerted against the tension of the spring, so that when the openings 10 are opposite the points 7 these points enter said openings, and the spring is thereby held securely in place inside of the frame.

Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is*

1. The combination, with a pair of suspenders, of an attachable and detachable supporting-clasp comprising a hollow casing, a hook formed integral with the upper end of said casing, a plurality of prongs Within the casing, and a leaf-spring bent upon itself and adapted to lit within the casing, said leafspring having lierfs therein for the reception of the prongs, substantially as described.

2. In apair of Suspenders, an attachable and 'detachable fastener-clasp comprising a casing,

supporting means formed integral with the upper end thereof, in wardly-proj ecti ng prongs formed integral with said casing, and a leafspring adapted to t within the casing, said leaf-spring being bent upon itself to form a loop at its lower end and having kerfs therein adapted to receive the prongs, substantially as described. y

3. In a pair of Suspenders, the combination with shoulder-straps and suitable supportingcords connecting with the buttons on the trousers-band, of a fastener-clasp connecting the front end of each shoulder-strap with the supporting-cords, said fastener-clasp comprising a casing having prongs therein, and a leafspring bent upon itself and adapted to lit within the casing, said leaf-spring having kerfs therein for the reception of lthe prongs, substantially as described.
