7 Be it known that I, CHARLES E. PALMER, of Nwburyport, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusctts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Studs for Fastening Shirt-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which-- Figures 1 and 2 are plan views,. on an enlarged scale, of a stud made according to my invention.

Figure 3 is a transverse section of the same, also on an enlarged scale, and taken in a line, :2: x, of fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

This invention is more especially designed for fastening paper collars in place when worn, but may also be employed for fastening cuffs and other like articles in position; and its object is to provide a means whereby the collar or other article may be properly buttoned or secured, without the great liability of tearing out the button-holes thereof which obtains withthe buttons or fastening ordinarily employed.

u The invention consists in so pivoting the inner button or disk of the device to the neck thereof, that such l button may be very readily manipulated in applying the stud to the garment or other articleto be fastened.

To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it i 1 with reference to the drawings.

i A is a fiat circular disk or button, projecting centrally from the inner side of which is a flat neck, a, to

the outer extremity of which, by a transverse pivot, a, is pivoted the outer disk or button, B. Formed upon the outer or opposite side of the button A, at the centre thereof, is a cylindrical stem, (1, in the outer end of which is a transverse pin, 6, which serves to retain upon the stem the oblong head C, which is fitted thereon in such manner as to turn upon the same. The inner side of this head, around the stem, is recessed or hollowed i cut, to afford room for a spiral spring, e, coiled around the stem, and serving to force the head outward 1 against the pin 6. Formed in the outer side of the head 0, and crossing each other at right angles, are grooves, c 0*, so arranged that the head being forced outward by the spring e, as just mentioned, the pin 6', when fitted into one, 0, of the grooves, will retain the head in one position, and when fitted into the other, 0*, will retain the head in a position at right angles to that just mentioned, the purpose of which will presently herein appear. In using the stud, the outside disk or button, B, is thrust through the button-holes of the two ends or edge of the neck-bandof the shirt, thus connecting or buttoning the same together, as represented in red outline in fig. 3, the operation of thus connecting the two ends of the neck-band being very materially facilitated by the movement allowed to the outer button upon its pivot. This being done, and the paper or other collar being properly passed around the neck of the person intending to wear the same, the oblong turning-head C is turned into such position upon the stem 6 as to be parallel with that of the button-holes in the ends of the collar, the pin b being pressed into the groove 0 of the disk or buttonA, to prevent any casual turning of the same. In this position the head may be very readily passed, in succession, through both the button-holes of the collar, without danger of tearing or injuring the same, which havingbeen done, the head is turned around into a position at right angles to the button-holes, and, crossing the same, elfectually prevents the ends of the collar from slipping from the stem bpasslng through them. The head beingretained in this last-named position by the pin p b fitting into the groove 0, the collar is eife'ctually retained in place. i

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The pivoted button B, in combination with the shank a, fixed disk A thereon, and detachable head 0, all constructed and arranged as shown and described. v
