Be it known that I, EUGENE C. J EWETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eaglegrove, in the county of Wright and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spade Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to spades, and more particularly to attachments therefor adapted to be utilized as steps or foot-rests, whereby the spade can be forced into the ground by pressing the foot against the end of it.
The object of the invention is to provide a step which is'adapted to be placed upon the market as an article of manufacture and which can be readily clamped upon a spade in position to be utilized, said step being held normally against accidental displacement and being also reversible, so as to be capable of use upon either the right or left side of the spade.
The invention consists of a step, preferably formed of pressed steel and which isu-shaped in cross-section, so as to receive the head of the spade. Arms extend from one end of the spade and are adapted to embrace the handlesocket, and means are provided for clamping these arms upon the socket in order to prevent displacement of the attachment.
The invention also consists of certain other novel features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a skeleton spade having my improved attachment thereon, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the attachment.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is the body of the step, the same being U-shaped in cross-section and tapered toward one end, the smaller end being rounded, as shown at 2, so as to prevent injury to the shoe of the operator. In using it the bolt 5 is removed and the arms 3 are placed at opposite sides of the handle 6 of a spade 7. The body 1 is then permitted to overlap and rest upon the upper edge of the spade, and afterit has assumed its proper position the bolt5 is replaced within the apertures 4 and tightened so as to clamp the arms3 upon the upper edge of the spade. The step will therefore be tightly locked in place and forms an excellent support for the foot. The attachment can of course be placed on either side of the spade-handle for use with either the left or right foot. While it is adapted for use in connection with any form of spade, it is more particularly adapted for that class of spades known as skeleton spades and which I have illustrated in Fig. 1 in the drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A step for spades and the like comprising a body portion adapted to receive the edge of a spade and to rest thereon, integral arms extending from the body, and means for clamping the arms upon the spade.
2. A step attachment for spades and the like formed in a single piece of metal and comprising a tapered loodyportion U-shaped in cross-section and adapted to receive and rest upon one edge of a spade, arms extending from the large end of the body portion,
and means engaging the arms for clamping the same upon the spade.
3. As a new article of manufacture a step attachment for spades and the like comprising a tapered body portion U-shaped in crosssection, integral spring-arms extending from the large end thereof, said arms being curved, and a clamping device engaging the arms.
