T0 at whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES R. PIDcocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Toggle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to produce adevice to expedite the stretching of hides in their respective frames while in course of manufacture.
My invention consists of a device for retaining the tension given the cords used in fastening the hides to frames while in process of tanning or being otherwise treated and is also applicable to hold taut guy-ropes attached to tents.
My improved metallic toggle-holder embodies several novel features of construction hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth and can best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a view of a section of a hide stretched in a frame.- Fig. 2 is aview of the device complete with cord attached, showing the relation of said device to cord and the method of applying same when in operation. Fig. 3 is a view of my metallic toggle-holder, and Fig. 4 shows the concave shape of said device.

At the other end of body d and at right angles to the latter are projected the two lugs b and c substantially parallel with each other and with lug a and forming between them the recess 1', lug I; forming the second recess entering from the other side of the body at the recess My invention is operated as follows: One end of the cord g, used in connection with the device A, being securely fastened to the hide G by a toggle at the point 2', as shown in Fig. 1, the opposite end of the cord 9 being secured by the knot f to the device A in recess e. The end of cord 9, to which my device is attached, is then given a half-turn around the knob it and then brought back on itself to the part of cord 9 running from hide G to knob h, holding device with lug toward the hide. The said part of cord g, running from hide O to knob it, is passed under lugc through a recess formed by lugs 0 and b, and thence over lug b, after which it continues to and passes under the lug or thumb-catch a, in which place it is retained by the slightly-concave form of lug or thumb-catch a, which is shown in Fig. 4:. When the operation has been carried as far as above, the operator slides the deviceA along the part of cord g toward the hide C, as shown in Fig. 1, at the same time pulling the hide toward the frame B, taking up the slack of the cord g with the toggleholder A, which, by reason of its slightlyconcave shape, retains whatever tension is thus placed on the cord. It is released by applying a slight upward pressure from the under portion of the lug or thumb-catch a.
My improved metallic toggle-holder is made of heavy wire bent into the shape shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and may be made larger and heavier for tightening guy-ropes on tents by being cast of metal.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A metallic toggle-holder consisting of three lugs projected from and at substantially right angles to the body of device, the lug at the end most removed from the other lugs being bent slightly concave to the plane of the body of toggle-holder, serving also as a thumbcatch; the inner or most centrally located of the lugs containing a recess in which, by a knot is retained one end of a cord, to the other end of which is attached a toggle, this lug in conjunction with the terminal lug forming a second recess which enters from reverse side of the body.
