Be it known that I, EMORY J. Moon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches; and its primary object is to produce a novel and highly useful device of this character of which the movable jaw may be quickly adjusted and as quickly secured in its adjusted position and one which is comparatively simple of construction, durable, and efficient.
A further object is to produce a wrench wherein the releasing of the movable jaw for adjustment and the securing of the said jaw in adjusted position is under the control of the hand of the operator grasping the handle of the wrench, whereby his other hand is free to adjust the movable jaw.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44, Fig. 2, alsolooking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 5 is an end view of the wrench.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 designates a shank having its forward end terminating in a rigid jaw 2 and its rear end enlarged to provide ahandle 3. The handle 3 has one of its edges grooved longitudinally, as at 4, Figs. 2and 4:. This grooved edge of the handle is provided with inwardlydireoted flanges 5 extending throughout the entire length thereof, as fully illustrated in Figs. 2 and i of the drawings.
A movable jaw 6 is mounted upon the shank 1 and has formed integral therewith a rearwardly-projectingstem 7. This stem is adapted to lie flush with the under edge of the shank 1 and is also adapted to be received by the groove A. The stem has its sides provided with longitudinally -extending grooves 8, which are adapted to receive the flanges 5, whereby to movably mount the jaw in applied position upon the shank 1 against tilting or sidewise movement. The under face of the stem is serrated, as at 9, for a purpose to be presently stated.
A locking-lever 10 is pivotally secured to the handle 3 to close over the groove 4 and engage the stem 7 to lock the jaw 6 in its adjusted position. This locking-lever is provided with a reduced stem 11, adapted to be received in a recess 12 in the rear end of the handle 3. A rivet 13 or other suitable fastening element is adapted to pass through the handle and engage the stem 11, whereby the locking-lever is pivotally secured in applied position. The inner face of this locking-lever is provided with serrations 14, adapted to cooperate with the serrations 9 to secure the jaw 6 in its adjusted position.
It is desirable to retain the locking-lever out of engagement with the stem 7 in order to permit of the free and rapid adjustment of thejaw 6, and to accomplish this I interpose a spring 15 between the handle 3 and said locking-lever 10. The spring 15 is mounted within a recess 16, formed in one edge of the handle, and has its free end 17 positioned within a recess 18, formed in one edge of the lockinglever 10. adapted to exert pressure upon the lockinglever to retain said lever out of engagement with the stem 7. A slight pressure brought to bear upon the locking-lever 10 by the hand of the operator grasping the handle will bring the serrations 14. into engagement with the serrations 9. and thus lock the jaw 6 in its adjusted po ition. A latch member 19 is pivotally secured to the shank 1 and is adapted to engage a projection 20 upon the lockinglever 10 to secure said lever in engagement with the stem 8. This" locking member is composed of a rectangular frame through which projects the shank 1. One end of said frame is inclined, as at 21, to facilitate in moving the latch out of engagement with the stem 20. The rear end of the frame is provided with a projection 22, adapted to be engaged by the free end of a spring 23, mounted in a recess 24 in the handle 3. This spring serves to retain the latch in engagement with the stem 20 and also hold it in such position that the stem will be automatically engaged upon moving the lever 10 into engagement with the shank 7. When it is desired to adjust the jaw 6, the latch 19 is moved out of engagement with the stem 20. As soon as lever 10 is thus freed the spring 15 will force its serrations out of engagement with the serrations 9 of the stem 7 thus leaving the jaw 6 free to be adjusted.
The free end 17 of the spring 15 is After the jaw has been adjusted the lever 10 is again moved to bring the serrations 14 into engagement with the serrations 9, whereupon the latch 19 will engage the stem 20 and retain the lever 10 in engagement with the stem 7 to lock the jaw 6 in its adjusted position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention will be understood without a further extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a wrench, a shank having one end provided with a rigid jaw and the other end with a handle, a movable jaw mounted upon said shank and provided with a stem, a locking-lever pivotally secured to the handle and adapted to engage the shank to retain the movable jaw in its adjusted position, said locking-lever being provided with a projection, a pivotal latch member composed of a rectangular frame through which the shank projects, said latch member being provided with an inclined portion adapted to be engaged by said projection when the locking-lever is swung to engage the shank, whereby to move the latch member to permit of its engaging said stem, and a spring adapted to engage the latch memher to retain said member in position to en- 3 gage the stem upon the locking-lever when the same is brought into engagement with said shank.
