Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed April 27, 1904. Serial No. 205,083.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. MOXHAM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at I/Vilrnington, county of Newcastle, and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Kegs or Vessels, of which the following' is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to improvements in kegs or vessels for containing powder or analogous substances made of some lexible material-such as pulp, paper, or similar materialand relates particularly to kegs or vessels of this nature that are required to be air-tight and impervious to moisture, the object of my invention being to construct a light, durable, strong, and inexpensive vessel, and this object I attain principally by the simple and effective manner of securing the heads to the body of the vessel.
I will first describe the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the vessel. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A is the body of the vessel, made of pulp, paper, or similar material and made in the form of a tube. a a are circumferential grooves or depressions rolled, pressed or otherwise formed in the body, forming internal projections a2 a2, upon which the heads B and B', also preferably made of pulp or similar material, rest. The ends a e of the body are crimped or turned over against the heads B and B', securing the heads in place between the turned-over ends a c' and the a2 a2.
C is the plug or stopper, made in the form of a screw-plug and tapped into one of the heads. The ends a a of the body are turned over against the heads.
While I prefer to use pulp, paper, or similar material, the method is equally applicable to steel or to any flexible substance. I also prefer to use for the body a material which in cooling or drying will contract or shrink, so that not only will the heads be retained by the bent body extensions, but by the shrinkage of the body in cooling or drying.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, isH
l. A keg or vessel, comprising a body having an internal projection, a head resting on said projection, the end of the body beyond the projection being bent against the face of the head and llixedly secured thereto by shrinkage.
2. A keg or vessel, comprising a body, a head supported within the body near one end, and a head supported within the body near the other end, the body beyond the heads being bent against the outer facesof the heads, the heads being secured upon their supports by longitudinal shrinkage of the body.
