Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. KnTTLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of signs of that class in which electric lamps are used for illuminating the lettering of the sign or sign-board.
The object of my invention is to provide a sign in which comparatively few lights or lamps may be used and in which by the use of suitable reflectors the rays of light will be thrown directly upon the lettering or signboard.
A further object is to provide a sign of this kind which can be cheaply manufactured and which will be durable and inexpensive to maintain.
Having the aforegoing special objects and others of general utility in view, I have invented the sign which will be hereinafter described in detail and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in a preferred form by the following views:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a sign constructed according to my invention, showing the use of a reflector along the upper edge. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the use of two reflectors. Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section, of a sign-board in which reflectors are used around the edges of same; and Fig. L is a vertical section on the line 4 I of Fig. 3.
Referring to the details of the drawings, A represents a sign-board which may be of any suitable size, style, or material, and, it will be understood, is adapted to be held at right angles from a building and have lettering on both sides of same. Above the upper edge of this sign is placed a double reflector-hood B, formed in semicylindrical shape, and the same is held in fixed relation to the sign-board by metal brackets secured, respectively, to said board and the inner side of the reflector. This reflector-hood is so arranged and held relative to the signboard that its concave surface will extend equally on opposite sides of the sign-board, whereby the rays reiiected therefrom will be thrown equallyvon opposite nsides of the lettering on the board. Secured along the upper edge of the sign-board are electric lamps c of any suitable design, and the same, it will be understood, are electrically connected and supported in the usual manner. The reflector-hood is made up of any suitable metal, and secured thereto on the inner surface is a reflecting material which may be of glass, burnished metal, or other material having reflective properties.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2, in addition to the reflector-hood B, I apply a bottom reflector-hood C of the same general form and construction as the corresponding upper reiiecto'r, but same is provided with a slot c', extending longitudinally thereof and at its lowest point, so that rain or snow falling in said hood will escape through said slot, and thus prevent the accummulation of water, dirt, &c., Which would otherwise take place.
In Fig. 3, in addition to the upper and lower reflectors, I have shown vertical reflectors, as D, which are secured to the horizontal refiectors A and C in any suitable way. The lamps in this case are placed around the edges of the sign-board, so that the rays will be reflected from all sides on the latter. This sign may be suspended by eyes, as 3, or in any other convenient or approved manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A sign-board having a semicylindrical reflector applied to its edge, and extending equally over opposite sides thereof, in combination with a sign having lamps placed along said edge, and housed by said refiector substantially as set forth.
2. A sign-board having semicylindrical rellectors applied to its upper edge, and also a reflector applied to the lower edge of said sign and having a longitudinal slot extending therethrough for the purpose described, in combination with a sign having lamps placed along said edges and housed by said reflectors.
