GUSTAVE J. DE GEYTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.

Application sied october e, 1917.
To all LU/"mmy t may concern l Be it known that l', Gns'ravn J. Dn GEY Tnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification. y
@ne object of my invention is to provide an advertising device which will include illuminating means and signs capable of being' illuminated by said means so that they can be distinctly seen.
Another object is to so construct my invention that the light from the illuminating means will bereflected on the ground so that when the device is used as an advertising sign on the street the side walk immediately below it will be illuminated and hence tend to brighten the surroundings of the store or place in front of which my invention is mounted. Y
A further object is to make my invention of comparatively simple construction so that it can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, l attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal,I sectional eleva tion of my invention as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same general nature as shown in Fig. 2 but illustrating a modification of my invention.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive of the drawings, 1 represents a casing which may be made of wood, sheet metal, or other suitable material and has substantial, vertical ends 2 and 3 and a back 4 which tapers upwardly from its intersection with the ends 2 and 3. rl`he top 5 slants upwardly from the upper edges of the ends 2 and 3, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The casing 1 is open at the bottom as shown at 6 and has a hole 7 in the top 5 through which depends a gas pipe 8 having a gas lamp 9 on its inner end and mounted within the casing 1. The ends 2 and 3 are faced on their perspective view of my in- Speccation of Letters Patent.
i ing 21 into which is fitted Patenten nee. ia, iets. Serial No. 184,718.
inner surfaces by end mirrors 1() and 11.
The back 4 has its inner surface faced throughout its entire length and width by a mirror 12. The top 5 has its inner surface faced by two angularly disposed mirrors 13 and 14, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. And it will be noted that the mirror 13 slants upwardly from the top of the mirror 1() and the mirror 14 slants upwardly from the top of the mirror 11.
Electric bulbs 15 and 1G are mounted within the casing 1 and depend through the top 5 and the mirrors 13 and 14 respectively so that it is possible to illuminate the interior of the casing either by the gas lamp 9 or the electric bulbs 15 and 16, or if desired both the electric bulbs and gas lamp may be employed simultaneously to illuminate the casing.
The ends 2 and 3 are provided with hangers 17 which have holes through which the hooked ends 18 of suspension rods 19 pass so that the casing may be hung from a wall or other suitable supporting structure.
The front 20 of the casing 1 has an opena frame 22, having hinges 23 secured to the front 20, as clearlv shown in Figs. l and 3. The frame 22 in the present instance is provided with a translucent glass 24 upon which may be painted or otherwise inscribed advertising matter of any character desired.
By having the mirrors arranged in the manner above described the glass 24 will be illuminated and a great portion of the light will pass outwardly from the open bottom of the casing onto the ground. The angular disposition of the mirrors 13 and 14 causes a wide angle of refiection so that a great portion of the side walk will be illuminated. lFhe end mirrors 10 and 11 also serve as reflectors for the light at an angle out of the open bottom of the casing 1.
The form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive is particularly adapted to be placed against the wall of a store. 0n the other hand, the form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 is adapted to be supported transversely of the pavement and is practically of the saine construction as the form of mv invention above described, but instead of having only one frame, as the frame 22, includes two frames 25 and 26 which are hinged at 27 and 28 to instance the large mirror 12 is eliminated to provide an opening for the frame 26 and the frames 25 and 26 are each .provided with translucent glass" 3Q upon which may be painted or printed any advertising matter. Thus in the form of my invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 it is possible to view the advertising matter from both sides, s0 that persons walking either up or down the street can read the advertising matter appearing at the front and rear of the device. In other respects the form of my invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is similar to that described in y connection with l to 3 inclusive and I have,
therefore, given similar parts corresponding reference numerals.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular forni, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing 'from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit niy self t0 the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention,
Copies ot this patent may bie obtained for what I claim as newV and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1 Y
