Be it known that I, ROBBERT D. WVILLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tap, in the county of Dickens, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Uarpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to carpet-stretchers, and more particularly to extensible stretchers, and has for its object to provide a stretcher which will be simple of construction and cheap of manufacture and which may be operated to quickly and efficiently stretch a carpet.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete structure. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the stretcher. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, partly broken away. Fig. 4L is 'a view showing a modification.

Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a longitudinally-extensible stock 5, including two slidably-connected sections 6 and 7. The section 6 is bifurcated at its inner end, as shown at 8, and the section 7 is reduced transversely at its inner end and has its reduced portion 9 slidably engaged in the bifurcation 8. The bifurcation 8 results in spaced armslO and 11, and formed through the ends of these arms are alining perforations 12. Halved against the outer faces of the arms 10 and 11 at their free ends are the lower ends of uprights 13 and 14, having perforations 15 therethrough, alining with the perforations 12, and passed through these alining perforations there is a bolt 16, which passes transversely through a slot 17, formed longitudinally in the reduced portion 9 of the section 7, the bolt being slidable from end to end of the slot. At their outer ends the sections 6 and 7 are provided with transverse heads 18, having carpet-engaging pins 19,

these heads having openings in their ends, in which are engaged the angular ends 21 of brace-rods 22, which are secured at their opposite ends to the sides of the sections 6 and 7. Secured t0 the upper faces of the arms 10 and 11 there is a plate 23, which lies with one edge against the uprights 13 and 14, thus closing the outer portion of the upper side of the bifurcation 8.

Secured to the upper face of the section 7 there is a rack 24, formed from a strip of metal having upwardly-directed spaced transverse convolutions 25, this strip having a transversely-reduced portion 26, which is secured to the upper face of the portion 9.

Pivoted between the upper ends of the uprights 13 and 1 1 there is a lever 27, which extends above and below its pivot-point and adjacent to its upper end is provided with a hand-grip 28. Pivoted to the lever 27 below its pivot-point there is a dog 29, which is arranged for engagement of the convolutions 25 when the lever is rocked to move the section 7 away from the section 6, and pivoted to the upright 13 there is a second dog 30, arranged for movement into and out of engagement with the rack 24 to prevent or permit movement thereof in the direction of the section 6.

In use the stretcher is placed upon a carpet, and the pins 19 are engaged therewith, after which the lever 27 is rocked to move the sections in opposite directions and stretch the carpet.
