PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH H. LYNCH, OF ROCK VALLEY, IOWA.
CARPET-#STRETCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,945, dated October 25, 1904.
Application filed March 15, 1904.
To all whom/ t may concern:
Be it known that I. J EREMIAH H. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Valley, in the county of Siouxv and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to carpet-stretchers, and more particularly to that class of carpetstretchers embodying longitudinally-extensible rods or bars anda lever to cause moveyment of the bars with respect to each other.-
The object of the invention is to construct a carpet-'stretcher of .this general character which will embrace the features of simplicity of construction and operation, strength with lightness, wide range of adjustment, and compactness when taken apartfor storage.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a carpet-stretcher embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is. a top plan view thereof, the operating-lever being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a` transverse section taken on the dotted line 3 3 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on dotted line 4 4 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on dotted line 5 5 of Figs'l and 2.
On the several figures of the drawings like parts are correspondingly marked by characters of reference.' Y f The main body A of the stretcher is a troughshaped frame formed of a bottom 1 and sides 2 and 3, arranged parallel to each other and at right angles to the bottom. The upper edges of the sides2 and 3 are provided with inclined notches 4, rounded at the base and arranged in pairs, so that the notches of the side 2 will be in line with the notches of the side 3, as
Serial No. 198,288. (No model.)
of the lbody A, and within a crotch 7 at itsiforward end is pivoted one end of a link 8,t he other end of which is pivoted Within an elongated slot near the lower end of the operating-lever C. Below the slot within which the link 8 is pivoted the lever is provided with across-pin 9, constituting a journal to engage the respective pairsof notches 4 in the sides 2 and 3 of the body A. f The lever extends slightly below the Across-pin 9, and is of a width to fit between the sides 2 and 3,- thus preventing sidewise movement of the lever and preventing lateral strain between lthe lever and link 8. The opposite end of the extension-bar B is reduced in height and terminates in a iiat surface 10, to which is secured two or more guide-loops 1l 12 to receive and hold one end of an anchor-bar D, the other end of which (or an extension thereof) is designed to rest against the washboard of a room in operation or some other suitable abutment.
The stretcher-head E is a T-shaped structure comprising a cross-bar 13 and shank 14. The cross-bar is tted on its lovvggerV surface with spikes or claws 15, adapted to engage the fabric o f a carpet, and the shank is of a width to iit snugly within the way formed by the grooves 5 of the body A, as shown in Fig. 3,
.whereby the stretcher-head is iirmly secured to the body A, but may be removed by drawing the shank 14 from the grooves 5 when occasion demands for purposes of storage, Sac.
To one side of the extension-bar B is pivoted a gravity-pawl 16, adapted to engage the notches of the side 2 of the body A, and thereby hold the extension-bar against the stretcherhead.
The anchor-bar D may be made in one or more sections to suit the needs of purchasers.
As shown, it is constructed of two slidablyengaged sectlons maintamed 1n operative relation by'guide-loops 17, secured to the outern j'ustrnent as to length of the stretcher as a Whole. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. In a carpet-stretcher of the character described, the combination oi the body having grooved sides, the edges of which are notched, the stretcher-head, the extension-bar slidably mounted in the grooves of the body, a lever having a cross-pin for engagement with the pairs of notches of the body, and a link pivoted to the lever and to the extension-bar, guide-loops carried by the extension-bar, and an anchor-bar secured removably in said loops, said anchor-bar being constructed of sections adjustable longitudinally on each other.
2. In a carpet-stretcher of the character described, the combination of the body having' grooved sides, the edges of which are notched,
Vthe extension-bar slidably mounted in the grooves of the body, a lever having a crosspin for engagement with the pairs of notches l ot' the body, a link pivoted to the lever and to the extension-bar, and the stretcher-head having its shank removably mounted in the grooves of the body.
3. Ina carpet-stretcher of the character described, the combination of the body having vertical sides notched at their edges, the extension-bar slidable between .said sides, a lever having a cross-pin to engage the notches of the sides, a link connecting the lever and extension-bar, and a stretcher-head; said lever extending` below said cross-pin and of a width to lit between the sides, whereby sidewise movement of the lever and lateral strain between the lever and link are prevented.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specilieation in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEREMIAH ll. LYNCH.
