A Be it known'that- I, F. M; REYNOLDS, of Mile Strip, iu the county of Madison, and State of New York, yhave invented a new and improved Loading and Unloading-Device for Wagons; and I d'o hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description" thereof, which will enable others skilled in `the art to make and use -the same, reference` being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon This invention relates to a new and improved loading and unloading-device for wagons, land of that class -In which the team, which is attached to the wagon and draws it with its load, is rendered subservient in performing the work of loading and unloading. t I
The object of this'invention is to obtain a device, forthe purpose specified, which will be extremely simple, and, in its application to a `wagon, in 'nowise involve any material alterationin the construction ot' the latter,- and hence be capable of being Vdirectly applied to any ordinary team, truck, or.haywegon'prei'iously used withoutit. Y The characteristic feature of my invention consistsiu a novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the driver, by a very simple` manipulation, may transfer at once the-draughtfpower or pull of the team from the wagonI tothe derrick-tackle and brake, the application of the latter to thewagonwheels, simultaneously with 'the application of power to the derrick-tackle, being essential inorder to prevent the wagon from-moving during`the 'operation of loading and unloading.
This invention also consists in a novel construction of 'detail' parts, pertaining tothe derrick and the tackle thereof, and also to the draugbt-pole,.wher'eby theobject of the invention is-fully attained,

i .At the rear part of the body of the wagon there' is a dei-rick, B, the upright or standard of which passes' through a cross-piece, b', on the rear part of the top of the body, and hasits lowerend steppediin a cross-piece, b, secured to thebottom of the body directly underneath b', (see iig.'1.) The standard or upright is composed of vtwo parts, et aXX, theabuttingiends of which are formed by an oblique cut, as'shown by the dotted line in iig. .l. These two parts, aX aXX, are connected together by a strap-joint or hinge, C, .the pintle of which is at the upper end ofthe oblique cut. Thclower strap ofthe joint or hinge is constructed'in the form of a socken? c, to receive, when the upper part, aXX, of the 'standard is an `upright position, 'the-,lower portion of said part, and thereby` render the standard as iri as possible. 'I i D is Vthe arm of the derrick, secured to the standard by a metal strap, bx, attached to each side of D, and passing around the standard. The nrm D is supported by a har, d,the lower end of which is secured to the I lower end of the upper part,'axx, of thestandard, and some distance below the pintle of vthe joint or hinge C. This supporting-bar is inclinedV from a -vertical line as little as possible, and this, in connection with the oblique abutting ends of the parts a ax et'- the derrick-standard, the sockets c to receive the lower `end ofjaxx, and the attachingr of the lower end ofthe-supportinglbar d to aXX, below the pintle of the joint or hinge C, render the dex-rick stii and firm. The connecting of'tbc arm D to the upright or standard of thederrick bythe metal strap bx, forms a strong attachment withoutl weakening the standard, as would bo the case were the arm fitted to -it by a mortise and tenon.

Its arm D is atta'ched tothe standard by a metal strap, cx, precisely like that of the 'arm D of derricl: B. .The arm D', however, is braced or supported differently from the arm 1), a stout wire, dx, being phssed through D near its outer end, and extended around the upper end of the standard. This forms, a very simple, heap," and eiiicient brace. n

Ax represents the brakebar of the' hind wheels of the'wagon, and ex 'the shoes at tho endsof said bar. The brake-bar is supported from the rear of the wagon-body by pendants fx, the upper'endsi of which are pivoted to the body; and to the centre of .the brake-bar there is attached a pendant-bar, Bx, which is connected by a-rod, M, to a lever, L, at the front part of the'wagon, and having its fulorum at N.
The front end of lever Lhas a rope, K, which eirtends upward, and is attached to the frame J at the front of the wagon-body.V A
The front brake-bar, Bx, is arranged in the usual `way,and hess curved rod, Cxx, attached, which extends, over the front axle, and has a pendant-lever, G, passing through-it, said lever vbeing connectedto the bolster gx, the connection .forming the fulcrum of the lever, as shown clearly in iig. 1. A sheave, R', is secured tothe 'lowerend of the lever G, through whoh-a rope, Cx, passs.

From the above description it will bc seen that when the bolt Q is dow-.nin slide S, and S connected with P, the wagonwill Vbe drawn along asv usual, and when it is desired to raise and. place an article on the wagon, the driver stops the. team until the dcrrick-rope lis attached to 'the article, and then draws up the rope K, which raises the lever L andspplies the rear brake to the hind wheelst A tthc same'timetherope-K is raised theholt Q is raised, in consequence of its rope I being attached to v Kfarnl, the team being started, draws the slido S outward, and the article is raised; The pull of. the team o'n the der rick-rop'e Gx, inl consequence of said rope passing through the' sheave R attached to lever G, causes the fron-t brake to b'o applie'd, and the wagon will therefore bei retained or preventedfroui moving while the dcrrick isin operation.l y
It will` beseen, of course, that the sheaves R' R' perform an important function. They admit of the articlos being raised` and lowered by the derrick a suitable distance, under n moderate length of niovemeut of theV team. The Vincrement of the latter is restricted vwithin certain limits, say six feet; and articles, such, for instance, as hay, would require to be raised eighteenfect when the wagon is nearly loaded. Hence the necessity of having the sheaves,and these may be single or double, as circumstances require.
The rod M- may be connected to the rear bralebar A at di'crent points, as shown at nx, in order tof l regulate the pressure'as required.
Having thus described .my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The slide S of the draught-pole, applied 4to the permanent or lix ed part P thereof, substantially as shown, ,in combination with the bolt Q connected with the cord K of theAbrnke-lcver L, allnrranged to operate in the manner substantiallyus andfor the purpose set forth.
2. The spring W applied to the bolt Q, when said bolt'is'used in connection with the slide S of lthe draught-- pole, and connected with the brakeactuating mechanism', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the lever vL', adjustable rod M, rope K, pendant-bar Bx, and rear brakcshoe Ax, as herein described, for thepurposc specified.
4. The connecting of the front brake-,barlx to the slide S of the 'draught-pole through the medium ofthe lever G and the tackle-rope Cx, arrangedA in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.4
5. The sheaves R R', in combination with the lover G, sliding pole S, rope Cx, front and rear brake-shoes AX BX, and derriok, whereby the wagon is stopped and the load elevated at one operation, as herein shown and described.
6. Constructing the dei-rick B with n. jointed standard, the two parts aX QXX, each of which have oblique abutting ends, connected by a. strapdainge or joint, provided with a socket, and having the arm D of said derrick connected to the standard by a metal strap, bx, and supported or braced by a. bnr, d, the lower end of which is attcliedrto the'llower end of the upper part, aXX,'of the standard, substantially as shown and described.
