To ALL W'HoM'IT MAY coNoERN:
3e it known that We, WILLIAi/L M. HAL'L, und JOHN JOHNSON, of Barrington, in the county of Yates, sind State of New York, have invented a new und useful Improvement in Machines for Loading and Unloading Hay or Grain; and We do hereby declare-that the following is u full, clear, und exact description oi the construction and operaition of the same, reference being had to the -onnexred dren-ings, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure lis :zeide elevation. Figure 2 'is u view of the'fork. i The lettere of reference refer to the same parte' in euch figure. i .l
` The invention consists in u particular construction und arravngethent o the parte of' the fork and of the mechanism for actuating it, for the purpose of loading and unloading hay or grain, when attached to an ordinary Wagon or cart, und so connected to the wheel thereof as that the forward' motion of the wagon will cause the forli:A to raise hay upon the wagon, and also so that when .loaded the some fork muy be used to unload with when the hayds not-to be deposited higher than the crane con be elevated, as hereinafter'explainedl To enable others skilled in the art to mulie and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation. A is a 'frame of any ordinary construction, except so fer as it is necessry for the support of ythe cranepost, and it must be securely fastened to the wilgen. `B is the crane post, fastened to one side of the frame A, es shown in l. It must be m'ade hollow or in'such'xuanner thet the rope H may puss through the pivot at the top on which the crop-e is fastened.- C'is the crine urm'iiadeto nt'upon the'izop o""'the postfB, in euoli'mse'neeluns to turn freely thereon, und held upon the post'by a pin being pus-sed through it into e groove around the pivot! It has u joint in it near the post sothat its outer end muy beoloWe-red when going into the barn or whenV not used,- and it may lbe elevated-to suit the height of the lood or the place of deposit Whenfused to unload With.r The outer end is held in position by the hooks P, or any other equivalent device' It is provided with d roller et i the outer end and one near the pivofhole for guiding the rope H. D is an arm, hinged to the crcss-piece of the frame A, as shown in iig. 1. It has o roller near the hinge to guide the rope H. v tthe other end is n spool, G, 'to Wind the rope H upon. The axis of the spool is held by this arm. Atthe end of this axis is a pinion of spur geuiit is represented by'dotted lines, onlllisdriven by the Wheel F, und when let ingeer it. 'will by the motion of the wagomwheel turn the spool G, wind up the rope H, and raise the fork and huyupron the 'wogon 'The rear end of this arm moy be raised with the rope I. Eis a guide or stirrup that holds 'the arm D in position. F is u. cog-wheel or spur geur, provided with arms or a, rimiuside, thot'moy have holes made through it so thht the P wheelmay befsstened withclips to the spokes of any ordinary Wagon-irl'ieel, and he easily removo'edtvhen ,not Wonted for the purpose specied. G is u spool to 4wind thefrope H'upon, driven hyn pinion on the end of the oxle that is driven by the wheel H. is u rope fastened, one end to the spool G und the other end to the fork, as shown in iig. l., I is o rope thot isused to raise the arm E, us shown in iig. 1.' One end is fastened tothe reor end of the arm D, the other ond near the top o' the crane post nit-h ihis-the arm is raised andthe pinion token outof gear with wheel I". J is a. cord, fostcned to the catch in the socket K; with this the'cetch is looscd from the stem O, yso that the forli will'open. K is s. socket maize to fit upcnlthe stem O; it is provided .with u ring at i the top, o spring-catch to hold the-stem 0,.:v1nd nn eye :it each side toattach the ropes L and L, as shown in each figure. L und L ore ropes; one end is fastened to the socket' andthe other end to the cuter ends of the box-s that pass through the purts Nef thelfork. When the stem Ois u nhookod the weightof the fork rests upon these, ropes und causes it to opon.' M is the body of' the fork; it -muy bouwde :is shown in the figures, the arched portion m being provided with en opening or posse-ge for: the stem (l to pees freely through. The two lower parts terminate with n; hinge 4or knuckle-joint to lreceive the clasp of the tines. N und N are olaspsinto which any number 'of tines muy be fastencii-I They ure made to linite with the body hl, und eech is provided with e. bar, n, through it at right ongles. To the outer ends oi theee hors the rupee L L ere fastened; to the .innerend the connections that unite them to thc 'stese 0. G is L f em provided 'with ou. enlorged conical head o', at the upper end made to enterthe socket l, the lower end to receive the conneetioni'rom it to the here. This stem is used when raising anything up with the fork, and when thelork is to be unloaded the Ahead o` the stem is disengaged by means of the cord J, so that the f ork willv be held by the ropes L L, as shown in fig. 2. P is a hook 'or clasp that holds the arene in any position required. There is one at each side of `th`e crane.
Having thusifully describedour invention, what we cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patennis.- 1'. 'The fork-head M, provided with the arched guident, in combination with the hinged clasps N, having the cross-bars n attached thereto, stein O o', nml socket K, when the several parts are constructed :wil arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.l i i 2. The detachable driving spurl-Wheel F, constructed sind applied ns' described,- in eouibina-tion `.vith hollow crane post B, provided with the hinged adjustable crane arm C, and jointed :mn D, upon which ie mounted the spool G und its driving pinion, the whole arranged und operntin'g substantially as and for the pux'posespeeed.
