TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Beit known that I, JOSEPH MORGAN, of West Springfield, in the county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new'and useful machine for pitching hay upon the cart or wagon, called the Automatic Hay-Pitcherg and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of the specifications, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a hay-cart with the automatic hay-pitcher attached.
Figure 2 is a view ofthe drum and its machinery.
Letter A is the fastening pin set in a spirel spring. B is the connecting-bar. O the catch-spring, which supports the bar, forming the connection with the wheel of the cart. D the cord which draws back the bal' over the catch-spring when the fastening pin is raised. E is the disconnecting-rod by which the catch-spring is depressed and the bar let loose. The machine consists of a portable wooden grooved drum, attached to the inside ofthe wheel ofthe cart, though somewhat smaller than the wheel, revolving upon the hub, in which is set the automatic combination of machinery by which the connection is made with the wheel, and an upright crane, having a socket joint in the middle, attached to the body of the cart near the drum. The fork is attached to the drum by a rope running over the pulleys in the arm of the crane.
The operation consists in connecting the drum with the wheel of the cart by means of the connecting-bar set in the rim, so that the loaded fork is elevated as the cart passes along, when the tender crowds it over the cart, turning the arm of' the crane to tho side and allows the hay to slide oit'. As soon as the fork touches the arm of the crane the rope compresses the disconnecting-rod in the rim of the drum and breaks the connectionpvhcn the fork can be drawn down for another load. When the cart is loaded the rope can be detached from the drum and the upper part ofthe crane removed with the forli if desired. t
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The attachment of a wooden groovcd drum to the inside of the wheel of aV hay-cart or Wagon, revolving upon the hub, in combination with crane and machinery by which said drum is connected to and disconnected from the wheel automatically, the whole constructed and operating'substantially in the manner as herein described.
