PIPE HANGER.

HENRY J. ROBINSON AND THOMAS V. CONWAY, OF'OLEVELAND, OHIO; SAID OONVVAY ASSIGNOR TO SAID ROBINSON PIPE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.
Application filed July 23, 1904. Serial No. 217,782.
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY J. ROBINSON and THOMAS V. CONWAY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Hangers, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein eX- plained and the best mode in which we have contemplated applying that principle so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
Our invention relates to pipe-hangers, and particularly to that class of hangers which is provided with an adjustable clamp, enabling the hanger to be accommodated to su pportingbeams of varying widths, and, further, which is verticallyadjustable toenable the pipe to be supported at different heights, such vertical adjustment being secured without disconf necting the pipe from the hanger.
Furthermore, our improved hanger provides means for securing the pipe in a plane, cutting the plane of the supporting-clamp at any desired angle.
Said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the inventiongch disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l represents afront view of our improved hanger supported by. a suitable I-beam, shown in broken section and holding a pipe, also shown in section. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and a partial vertical section of the device asillustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section of the clamp forming a part of our invention, and Fig. 4 shows in perspective one of the component sections of said clamp.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a section of an I-beam, rail, girder, or other suitable means of support. A clamp B is adapted to engage said support and comprises two similar sections I) b, adapted to be adjustable in a horizontal plane, so as to accommodate said clamp to beams of varying widths. Said horizontal adjustability is obtained as follows: Each section comprises an arm and an end piece Z22, said arm being' connected to said as shown in Figs. 3 and'lf, and at about onethird of the distance from the other edge of said end piece b2 is provided a slot 3 of substan tially the same height and width as an arm and through which the arm of the other section I) is adapted to be passed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and in which it is adapted to be supported, whereby the sectionsb can be adjusted relatively to each other to enable the clamp B to engage beams of varying widths, suitable hooks b4 being provided on the end pieces b2 to grip over the flanges a t of the beam A. The sections t having been adjusted as is desired may be fastened securely rela tively to each other by means of a suitable screw 55 and a plurality of suitably-alined screw-holes 5G.
rIhe screw b5 is adapted not only to retain the sections b Z) securely relatively to each other. butalso forms a support for a hangerrod O, which is connected to the clamp B by means of a suitable cap c, through which is passed and against the under edge of which abuts a swivel-joint c/adapted at its outer end to pass between the arms b' b of the sec'- tions b Z) and provided with a suitable screwhole registering with the screw-holes L of the arms H. The lower end of the hangerrod Ois provided with the construction clearly shown in Fig. 2, comprising the interiorlythreaded sleeve D, adapted at its upper end to engage the lower threaded end of the hangerrod O and at its lower end to engage the eX- teriorly-threaded member E, provided with a jam-nut e, adapted to screw up tight against the under surface of the sleeve D. It will be noted that by loosening up the nut e the construction shown and described enables the raising or lowering of the member E without dismantling or disconnecting any parts of the device by simply turning the hanger-rod O in the proper direction. The member E is adapted to receive and retain the two ears ff of a pipe-supporting' band F, adapted to encircle and hold up a pipe G or any other object which it is desired to support.
In case it is desired to support a plurality of pipes G from one clamp B some of the hanger-rods O may be secured to said clamp laterally of the central vertical plane passing through the beam A and either inside of or outside of the end pieces b2.
It will be noted that the said construction gives a wide latitude to the widths of supporting-beams with which it may be readily and effectively connected and that after the connection with the pipe is made and secured the latter may be rotatedthrough any arc and into a position at any desired angle relatively to the supporting-clamp and also adjusted vertically within the limits of movement of the member E within the sleeve D without disconnecting the beam or pipe from thehanger or any of the constituent parts of the latter from the other parts of the same.
Other modes of applying the principle of our invention may be employed instead ofthe one explained, change being made as regards the means herein disclosed,` provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
We therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as our invention- 1. ln a pipe-hanger, a clamp comprising two sections, each section comprising an arm and beam-engaging means and provided with a slot in which the arm of the other section is adjustable; and means for fastening said sections together in any desired position.
2. In a pipe-hanger, ay clamp comprising two sections7 each section comprising an arm and a supporting member adapted to engage a beam and provided with a `slot in which the arm of the other section is adjustable, whereby the distance between the supporting members may be varied; and means for fastening said sections together in any desired position.
3. In a pipe-hanger, a clamp comprising two similar sections, each section comprising an arm and a supporting member adapted to engage a beam and provided with a slot in which the arm of the other section is adjustably mounted` whereby the distance between the supporting members of the two sections may be varied; and means for fastening said sections together in any desired position.
Signed by us this 21st day of July, 1904.
HENRY J. EoBiNsoN. THOMAs v. ooNwAY.
