PIPE-HANGER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. Lour- SINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Provi- 5 dence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in specification. p
In equipping factories with piping, and particularly with the pipes employed in audesirable to suspend the pipes'from the flanged bottoms of I -beains, and my invention is particularly intended to provide a form of pipe hange by means of which a pipe may be securely supported as above described without making 1t. necessary-t0 employ or keep in stock different sizes of some or all of the pa'rtsof the hanger to correspond with all the diflerent thicknesses of I-beam flanges. To this end I have devised certain improvements which are hereinafter described and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing one form of my hanger as preferably cons. ioted; Fig. 2 is a section on the line mw in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. l but showing the hanger applied to an I-beam having thinner flanges.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, 2 represents the lower portion of an I-beam having the usual flanges 3 at its bottom, and lrepresents a hook-shaped jaw member adapted to receive one of the flanges 3 within its jaw and to be clamped upon the same by means i of a rod 5 passing transversely beneath the bottom of the beam 2 and having a hook 6 at one end to receive the opposite flange '3,
the opposite end of said rod being passedthrough an opening 7 in the jaw member 4 and threaded to receive a nut 8 whereby the jaw member and the hook 6 may be drawn together and thus secured firmly to the bottom of the beam 2.
The parts above referred to, generally ,pipe hanger heretofore employed, but in the -prior form of hanger the jaw member has been shaped to fit a flange of given thickness, and therefore it has been necessary to provide jaw members of diflerent sizes in correspondence with the differentthiclmesses of flanges found on I-beams. According to my presentinvention, however, I provide Specification of Letters Patent.

the jaw member 4 with a jaw of such size as to be capable of receiving an I-beam of any given thickness, withina considerable range, and I give to this jaw a peculiar con--' tour whereby the necessary points of contact between said jaw and the flange of the I-beam are maintained regardless of the exact thickness of the flange. This peculiar contour is illustrated in Fig. 1, in which the jaw member 4 is so shaped as to provide an overhanging top portion having a down-- wardly-facing surface 9 adapted to rest upon the top of the I-beam and thus support the weight of the suspended parts, an intermediate surface having a curved outline, as shown at 10, and adapted to bear against the adjacent edge of the flange 3-in opposition to the hook 6 and thus resist the clam ing pressure of the nut 8, and forwar ly-extending under portion having an upwardly-facing surface 11 adapted to bear against the under side of the I-beam and thus prevent the jaw member from rocking upon the edge of the flange 3 when the jaw member and the hook 6 are drawn together by screwing up the nut. Thus there are three points of contact between the jaw member 4 and the flange 3, the curved surface 10 being so shaped with respect to the surfaces 9 and 11, that engagement between the jaw member and the flange at these three oints will always be secured, whatever t e thickness of the flange may be. Thus in Fig. 3 the same jaw memberillustrated in Fig. 1 is shown as applied to a flange 3 of less thickness than the flange 3, but in t is case also, although the jaw member 4: is tilted somewhatas compared with its position illustrated in Fig. 1, the three bearing surfaces above described-engage the corresponding surfaces of the flange andv thus provide the desired resistance and support at these points.

In addition to the parts above described my hangcrincludes suitable means for suspending a pipe from the jaw member 4, and any desired form of pipe-supporting device suit- -able for use with a hanger of this type may be employed for this purpose. By way of example have shown in Fig. l a supporting device comprising a link 12 pivotally susnded atits upper end from the jaw memr 4 and having a horizontal flan ed bearing 13 at its lower end about whic a pipesupporting link 14 is adapted to swivel, thus rmitting the pipe to be given any desired irsction with respect to the length of the Z-bcam 2.
It is not necessary that the jaw member above described be adapted for use with may assume, a cooperating clamping mem-' ber adapted to engage the I-beam and passing through a vertical slot in the jaw memher to permit adjustment of parts to the sup orting device pivotally depending rorn ,sai jaw member.
