To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES J. HINDE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Sand usky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to packages particularly designed for the protection of fragile articles in shipment; and the invent-ion consists in the novel combination, with an article of bulgingform, ofa corrugated tubular wrapper. as hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the package with the contained article indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of engaging the bulging articles with the wrapper.

A is the bulging article which is to be protected in the package and which, as shown, consists of an incandescent electric-lamp bulb.

B is an expansible corrugated wrapper, pre ferably of paper or other semiresilient material and which is of tubular form and adapted to be engaged with the article by an endwise movement. The corrugations in the wrapper B preferably extend longitudinally thereof. and the diameter of the tube when these corrugations are unexpanded is less than that of the maximum diameter of the bulging article. Thus when the article is inserted in the tube the corrugations will be drawn out adjacent to the bulging portion thereof; but on account of the resilient nature of the material said corquence the contained article is held from displacement by friction and also by the fact that the opposite ends of the tubular wrapper contract or taper oppositely from the bulge.

l/Vhere, as shown, the contained article is a lamp-bulb, the wrapper is preferably slightly longer than the article, so that the latter will be suspended out of contact with external objects at either end. This forms an effective protection during shipment.

Some of the additional advantages of the structure are that the time consumed in packing is reduced to the minimum. Further, the bulb may be engaged with the lamp-socket before it is withdrawn from the wrapper. thus avoiding the necessity of the workman touching the glass with his hands. Still another advantage is the ends of the wrapper which are out of contact with the contained article form a more efficient protection than in a construction where the wrapper more exactly conforms to the shape of the article to be protected.

hat I claim as my invention is 1. A package comprising a bulging article and an enveloping corrugated wrapper of semiresilient material the portion of the corrugations adjacent to the bulge being expanded whereby a clamping tension is exerted on the article.

2. A package comprising a bulging article and an enveloping tubular longitudinally-corrugated wrapper of paper the natural diameter of said tube being uniform throughout its length and less than the maximum diameter of the article whereby corrugations adjacent to the bulge are expanded and placed under tension and the tube assumes a double tapering form from the bulge to the opposite end thereof.

3. A package comprising a bulging article and an enveloping corrugated tubular wrapper, shaped to have a Zone of contact with the contained article at the bulge thereof and being out of contact throughout the greater part of the remainder of its surface.
