TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, C. BEATTY and G. BEATTY, of Portsmouth, in the county ofl Norfolk, and State of Virginia, have invented a new and. useful Improved -Apparatusfor Cutting Ice, Etc.; and we do hereby declare i that the following is'a full and exact description jof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus for cutting ice for soda-fountains, dto., and consists principally in the combination of a plane with certain devices whereby a simple and effective cutter is produced, as will be fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional elevation.
Figure 2, a transverse section of our improvedapparatus.
In the drawings,
A represents a'box or case, constructed of marble, wood, or other suitable material, a section of which is shown in iig. 1, and one side of which ispcut away to admit the tumbler.
B represents a plane of ordinary construction, provided with grooves, upon its sides,- which has a forward and backward motion upon the slides a a The plane,"when in position, is inverted, and i-s provided with the handle Z1', as shown. .A .A
vCrepresents a piece of sheet metal, bent 'nearly in U-shape, which is attached to the under side of the plane, beneath its opening. This metal has sutlicient elasticity to permit a tumbler to be sprung easily into place between its sides, where it is securely held.
D represents a. hopper, located upon the case A,which is provided with the cover d. This latter should bc so arranged as'to tightly shut in the ice, and prevent it from wasting.
'E represents a. block, itting'snugly within the hopper D, which is provided with a rod, e, projecting upward through a hole in the cover. i
F F represent rubber balls placed at each endof the case A, as shown.
It will be observed that the plane is provided with a projecting board at its forward end, which rests under the hopper when the plane is drawn back. This construction. is not necessary with a long plane and case.
The operation of our invention is as follows:
The hopper having been filled with ice, either with a square piece or with lumps, and the tumbler havingbeen inserted in place, the plane is operated -with the right hand, while the left hand presses down upon the rod e. By this operation the ice is cut bythe forward movement of the plane, and, falling through the opening, fills the glass, which is held by the spring beneath. The pressure upon the rod e keepsthe ice in contact with the plane.
The rubber balls F F, at each end, break the force of the movement, and cause a slight'rebound.
By the construction and arrangement herein described, a simple but extremely desirable apparatus is produced, which possesses advantages, it islbelieved, over anything in use.
It is not necessary to touch the ice with the hands after the hopper is 'filled Theice cannot be wasted, and is easily cut when needed.
Having thus fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure byLet'ters Patent, is-
The case A, plane B, spring C, hopper D with cover 0l, block E with rod e, the whole being combined and arranged substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 3d day of June,.1868.-
C. BEATTY," G. BEATTY.
