Description

J. A. RUDISILL.
TOY. APPLICATION FILED AUG-1,1917.
1 25@,@2% Patented Dec. 11, 1917.
WITNE'SES ATTORNEY JOHN A. RUIDISILL, 01F LEWISTOWN, MONTANA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 1, 1917. Serial No. 18$,919.
Toall whom it may concern; r Be it known that 1, JOHN A. RUDISILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewistown, in the county of, Fergus and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to toys, and comrehends the provision of adevice designed for shooting marbles or isimilar'projectiles, the toy being very simple in construction,
and convenient to handle and manipulate.
for the purpose intended.- .N
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection With the accompanying drawing, the invention residing inthe construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part-of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and this manipulating portion forms an integral" part of the shaft. If desired, the
where1n:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 isan edge elevation showing the The device forming the subject-matter of my invention consists of an elongated body member 10, which may be constructed from any suitable material, but preferably made of a narrow strip of wood or the like.
'lhe' body 10 is formed to provide an extension 11 which projects an appreciable distance beyond one extremity of the body and to, one side ofsaid end, andthe purpose of this extension will Toe-hereinafter set forth. One face; of the body portion 10 which is disposed at right angles to theextension, is cut away for a portion of-its length, and defines a shoulder 12 nponwhich one extremity of a leaf spring 13 or the like-rests. The, cut away portion permits the spring to normally lie substantially, within the plane ofthe body, while the spring is of such length as to project beyond one end of the body, terminating substantially flush with the extension 11. The spring'13 may be secured to the body in any suitable manner, but by preference a threaded fasteni,ng element 14 passes through alined open ings in the spring and body, and has associated therewitha nut 15 as shown. Manifestly, the spring is secured adjacent one end so that the spring .is permitted to be flexed, as it is through the inherent qualities ofthe spring that the marble or the like is projected. The extension 11 is disposed in right angular relation with the spring 13, and these parts cooperate to Patented Dec, Ml, 191?; v
hold the marble or the like against casual derangement upon the adjacent extremity ofv the body 10. The body 10' serves in'th'e capacity of a handle so that the device can be conveniently used by small children.
The side of the body 10 against which the spring is arranged, is provided with a naled in the recessg vextending transversely of the body and-projecting slightly beyond one edge thereof. Carried by the shaft is a right angularly disposed extension, which provides a manipulating portion 18 for partly rotating the shaft, and by preference shaft and manipulating portion may be constructed from Wire and may vary in design in the production of a device suitable for the purpose indicated. Carried by the shaft 17 is alug 20 ,which. normally assumes a position within the recess 14, lying in parallelism with the spring 13, thus permitting the latter to contact the adjacent side of the body 10. In practice, when the shaft 17 is rotated in a direction to project the lug 20 from the recess 15, the spring is caused to assume the position illustrated in Fig. 2, in which position the spring is placed under tensions It is to be understood that the marble or other device rests upon the upper extremity of the body portion, and when the shaft is rotated in a reverse direction to position the lug Within the rece ss, the spring forcibly assumes its normal position, during which time the marble or other device is projected from the extremity of the body 10.. The disposition of the manipulatrecess 16, and a shaft 17 is suitably jouring portion 18 of the shaft is such that the lldesire to have it understood that what is herein shown and described constitutes the preferred embodiment of the invention, and
' is notto be considered restrictive, as such said groove and projecting beyond one ex-' changes may be resorted to When desired as fall Within the scope of Whatis claimed.
What is claimed is:- r 1. A device of the class described comprising an elongated member, said member hav ing a transverse groove in one side, a 'yieldable element secured to saidside, covering tremity of the said member, a rod arranged in said groovefor rotation, a lug projecting from said rod and normally lying parallel with said yieldable element, and adapted to fi'ex said yieldable element when the rod is turned in one direction for the purpose specified.
2. A device for shooting projectiles, comprising an elongated member, an extension projecting from one side of said member beyond one end thereof, and designed to supmatinee adapted to retain said article therein when the toy is held horizontally, a yieldable element secured to one side of the member and projecting beyond said end, and means interposed between said member and element, and
operable to flex the latter forthe purpose described.
4. A toy for shooting projectiles, comprising an elongated member having a relatively broad end portion, an extension projecting from one side of the member beyond said end, said extension and end serving to sup port the article to be projected when the toy is held in either a vertical or horizontal position, said extension having a transverse groove on one face, a yieldable elementsecured to one side of sald member and projecting beyond said end, said element being disposed at right angles to the extension,
and means operable to flex said element for the purpose described.
5. A toy for shooting projectiles compris-' ing an elongated member of substantially rectangular formation in cross section, an extension projecting beyond one end of the member and, disposed longitudinally of the latter, a leaf spring secured at one end to the I side of said member, said spring projecting beyond one end of the member and disposed at right angles to said extension and means interposed between said member and said spring for flexing the latter for the purpose specified. v i
In testimony whereof ll aflix my signature.
