i TOWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLtaM' H. RODEIIEAVE, of Minuilsbuxg, Montgomery county, Ohio, hav'o invented a new and useful Machine for Dressingvthe 4Inside of Sprung Felloes and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bei-nghad to the accompanying drawings, making ,part'of this specification. v I
This invention rclatesto a machine intended to be driven by steam or other power, whereby the inside`` .ofthe felloes of wheels may be dressed with great accuracy, speed, and economy.'
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine embodying my invention.
Figure- 2 is a vertical section ofthe operative parts, in the plane of .the cutter-shaft.
Figure 3 is a-section, in the plane of rotation, of the cutter.
Figure 4 is a top vicwof thconvex rest 'or bed onl'whieh the stuff is laid. f
The frame A is provided'with "a pair of head-stocks, B B', adjustable toward or fromione another, and affording journal-bearing to a shaft or spindle, C, armed with a cutter-head, D, and having a, pulley, E, by which it is rotated at a. high velocity by a belt, F, from a pulley, G,- on the driving-shaft II. 4 Rising from the rear of the frame are twostandards II', to whichis 'pivoted the rear bearing J, of a shaft,
K,V whose front journal-box, L,.is similarly pivotsd in a post, M, which is restricted to a vertical motion in the frame, and connects below with lever, N, notched to receive an adjustable weight, O.
The shaft K is armed in front with a milled feed and pressure-roller, P, and in the rear with a pulley, Q, driven at a low velocityin the direction indicated by the arrov'vgby the represented or any suitable belted or other connection with the driving-shaft R Vis a wedge, by which the descent ofthe feed-roller? is determined, to suit the depth of felloe. v i V Pivoted to the rear end 'of the frame is a beam, S, whose forvvard end is brought to any desired elevation for any desired depth` of cut, by means ofa,wedge,-T, and is secured at s uch elevation by a bolt, U.
This beam S supports, near its front end, a convex .rest or bed, V, having, together with the beam S, a central excavation foy` the playof the cutter-head, and, being positively attached to said beam,"receive`s,.by its elevation, a corresponding adjustment. W W are a pair of customary\fast and loose driving-pulleys.
Thevconvex rest; V, has at its front side a vertical ilange, X, containing one or more antilfriotion rollers, z, and is provided at its rear side with two springs, Y Y', adjustable toward and from the front by set-screws y, andbearing, at their ends, rollers Z.
, I have selected, jto illustrate my invention, a machine in which the cutter-bead revolvesin a vertical plane, ,but said 'head may, if preferred, be so arranged' as to revolve in a horizontal plane, the other operative parte of course preserving the same relative positions, and the frame and driving-mechanism being modified accordingly.
An adjustable helical spring, or other customary device, may of course be used, if desired, in place of the weicht O. v DThe'action ot'- the machine is as follows: The various operative parts having been adjusted to their proper relative distances und velocities, and being set in motion, the undressed felloes are simply fed in at the right, and emerge in a dressed condition at tbeleft end ofthe convex rest. y
In Vfeeding in the' felloes, care is ofcourse taken to present the face side of the felloe next ,to the flange X.
I claim herein as new, and of my'inventionl The convex and langodrest or bedV, adjustable in height' in the manner described, in combination with the cutter-head D-and adjustable feed and pressure-rollers P, or their mechanical equivalents, the whole being arranged and adapted to operate substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand. v
r WILLIAM E. RODEHEAVER.
