To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELISHA HART PURDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Somers. in the county of VVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Tool-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to tool-holders, and especially to that class of tool-holders designed for use by painters in holding the tools usually employed in a convenient location.

The object of my invention is to provide a device which shall be cheaply manufactured and which may be readily and conveniently secured to a paint-pot and provided with clasps or sockets adapted to hold such tools as brushes, scraper, putty-knife, and the like upon the pot and convenient to the hand of the painter.

With this and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accom panying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved tool-holder mounted upon a paint-pot and showing in outline a variety of tools disposed within the socket. Fig. 2 is a plan View of my tool-holder removed from the paint-pot. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the tool-holder as it will appear as an article of commerce.

My improved tool-holder is mounted upon an ordinary paint-pot l and in its preferred form consists of a band 2, somewhat larger in size than the pot upon which it is designed for use. Upon the inner surface of the band 2 are secured a plurality of plates or disks 3, adapted to hold the band 2 away from the surface of the pot 1. Upon one free end of the band 2'is mounted an adjustable member 4:, adapted to vary the length of the band 2. Within the adjustablemember 4 is provided a slot 5, adapted to fit upon and engage a pin 6, rigidly secured to the band 2. l Vithin the adjustable member 4 is also provided a slot 7, and within such slot 7 is disposed a set-screw 8, engaging the band 2 and adapted to exert a clamping pressure upon the adjustable portion 4: to hold such adjustable portion at any predetermined point. vided with a screw-threaded opening. The other free end of the band 2 is provided with a lug 10, which'in turn is provided with an opening adapted to receive the clampingscrew 11. The clamping-screw 11 is adapted to fit within and engage the screw-threaded opening in the offset portion 9 and to exert a clamping pressure between the free ends of the band 2 to secure it tightly about the pot 1.

Upon the external surface of the band 2 are secured a plurality of clamping or socket members 12, adapted to engage and retain any of the various tools commonly used by a painter. It is found that sockets substantially in the form of a letter C, with the opening disposed outwardly from the band, are Well adapted for holding the tools mentioned and may be so disposed relative to the band that the tool may occupy a vertical position or a position at an angle to the vertical, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or the sockets may be adjustable, so that the position of the tool may be varied at the will of the user.

It is obvious that different forms of sockets for holding the tools or some form of a clamp might be substituted for the socket 12, as shown. It is further obvious that the band 2 might be supplied with a hinge, as shown in Fig. 2; but such hinge is not necessary to the satisfactory operation of my invention. It is further obvious that difierent clamping means might be substituted for the screw 11 and that other minor changes might be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the claims.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the character described, comprising a band adapted to be secured about a paint-pot, inwardly-extending spacing-abut ments secured to the said band and adapted to engage the paint-pot to support the said band ata distance from the said pot and toolsupporting means secured to the said band.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a band adapted to be secured about a paint-pot, inwardly-extending spacing-abutments secured to the said band and adapted to engage the paint-pot to support the said band at a distance from the said pot and openended sockets secured to the said band and adapted to receive and retain tools and the like.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a band adapted to be secured about a paint-pot and sockets secured to the said band and adapted to receive and retain tools and the other end of the band, means adapted to secure said adjustable portion at a predetermined point upon the band and sockets secured to the external surface of the band and adapted to receive andretain tools and the like. v

5. A device of the character described, comprising a band adapted to encircle a paint-pot and the like, bearing-plates secured to the inner surface of the band and adapted to bear against the pot, an adjustable portion slidably mounted upon one free end and adapted to vary the length of said band, a clamping device connecting the adjustable portion and the other end of the band, a set-screw adapted to secure said adjustable portion at a predetermined point upon the band and sockets secured to the external surface of the band and adapted to receive and retain tools and the like.
