Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. BRADY, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ink-Well Frame and Holder', of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined ink-well frames and holders; and my object is to provide a device of this character which will eifectually prevent ink-wells from being overturned while in use.
The device is especially applicable to schooldesks wherein the ink-wells extend through the tops of the desks and terminate inside of the latter, as the device surrounds the inkwell and prevents it from being pushed upwardly and overturned by books or slates placed in the desk.
Furthermore, the parts constituting the device are reliably secured to each other and to the desk in such a manner that it will be impossible for the scholars to loosen or remove them from place.4
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and in order that it may be fully understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a broken plan view of a desk provided with my device, the lid of same being raised in order to show theinkwell. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of same, taken on line II II of Fig. 1. Eigs. 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 show the various parts of the device detached. Fig. 8 is an inverted plan view of the device with a cap forming a part thereof removed.
In said drawings, 1 designates the top of a desk, provided at its upper right-hand corner with a circular opening 2, communicating at its upper end with an annular recess 3.
'4 designates an annular top plate fitting snugly within the recess 3 and provided with a depending marginal iiange 5, which reaches to the bottom of said recess.
6 designates a tubular member forming one ofthe upper sections of the device. Said member is provided with a forward extension 7, secured to the under side of the top plate by means of rivets 8. Said member also has a rear extension 9, which forms alower bearingsurface for the rearwardly-extending hinge member 10 of a lid 11, adapted when closed to iit snugly within the central opening 12 of the top plate. Top plate 4 has a recess 13 communicating with the rear portion of opening 12'for the reception of the hinge member 10, which lits snugly therein and prevents lateral movement of the lid by contact with the adjacent ends of the recess. Hinge member 10 is provided at its ends with truunions 14, journaled in bearings 15 in the under side of top plate l1, which latter is provided at its forward side with a semicircular cavity 16, communicating with opening 12, so that the thumb-nail may be readily inserted beneath the lid when it is desired to open the latter. The under side of hinge member 10 is pro'- vided with a depending rectangular lip 17, having flat bearingsurfaces 18 19, respectively, the former of which rests upon eXtension 9 when the lid is in an open position, while the latter rests upon said extension when the lid is closed. As said lip is held firmly in contact with the extension by the downward pressure of the top plate, it is ob vious that said lip will reliably hold the lid in either of its positions.
The opening through member 6 is enlarged at its upper end for the reception of a marginal fiange 2O at the upper end of the inkwell 21, which is suspended in said member by its flange resting upon an annular shoulder 22, formed by enlarging the opening through member 6.
That portion of member 6 which projects from the undersurface of the desk-top has external threads 23 for the reception of the internal threads 24 of an inverted cap 25, provided with a marginal iiange 26, which is forced into frictional contact with the under surface of the desk-top when said cap is screwed into position. "'"Said cap is provided with two oppositely-extending lugs 27 for the reception of a suitable wrench employed to screw the cap into position so tightly that it cannot be easily removed. Hence it will be impossible for the scholars to take the device apart by hand. Cap 25 is reinforced with a centrally-disposed annular flange 28 for resisting the strain imposed thereon by the wrench, and is also provided at its lower end with a centrally-disposed aperture 29 of sufficient diameter for the admission of a pencil shouldit be necessary to employ the same to dislodge the ink-well from its seat.
As it is intended to permanently secure the device to the desk, the upper surface of flange IOO IIO
26 is provided with two oppositely-disposed ratchet-teeth 3 0, which are countersunk into the undersurface of the desk-top, as shown in Fig. 2, when the cap is screwed into position, said teeth being so disposed that their abrupt surfaces 3l will contact with the desktop, and thus assist iiange 26 in holding the cap from being unscrewed.
In order to prevent member 6 and the top plate from turning with the cap while the latter is being screwed or unscrewed, I provide the depending flange of said top plate with a tooth 32, which is sunk into the top of the desk, as shown in Fig. 2.
From the above description it is apparent that I have produced a device which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, thoroughly effective for the purpose intended, and gives an ornamental finish to the desk.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a desk and an inkwell, of a member embracing the ink-Well, oppositely-disposed extensions on said member, an annular top plate secured to one of said extensions, a lid hinged -between the free end of the top plate and the underlying extension, and a depending lip at the hinged end of the lid provided with two flat surfaces which alternately bear against the said underlying eX- tension when the lid is closed and opened.
2. The combination with a desk and an inkwell, of a tubular member embracing the inkwell, oppositely-disposed extensions on said member, an annular top plate secured to one of said extensions, a lid hinged between the free end of the top plate and the underlying extension, a depending lip at the hinged end of the lid provided with two flat surfaces which alternately bear against the said underlying extension when the lid is closed and opened, and an inverted cap for closing the lower end of the tubular member.
3. The combination with a desk and an inkwell, of a tubular member embracing the inkwell, oppositely-disposed extensions on said member, an annular top plate secured to one of said extensions, a lid hinged between the free end of the top plate and the underlying extension, a depending lip at the hinged end of the lid provided with two flat surfaces which alternately bear against the said underlying extensions When the lid is closed and opened, an inverted cap for closing the lower end of the tubular member, and ratchet-teeth on said cap for engaging the under side of the desktop.
4:. The combination with a desk and an inkwell, of a member embracing the ink-well, extensions on said member, an annular top plate secured to one of said extensions and provided with a recess communicating with its opening', a lid provided witha hinge member adapted to fit snugly within the recess in the top plate, trunnions on said hinge member journaled in the top plate, and a lip depending from the rear end of the hinge member provided with two flat surfaces which alternately bear against the underlying extension when the lid is closed and opened.
5. The combination with adesk and an inkwell, of a tubular member secured to the desk and loosely embracing the ink-well, said tubular member having a threaded lower end, forward and rearward extensions on said tubular member, an annular top plate secured to the forward extension, a lid hinged between said top plate and the rear extension, a tooth on said top plate for engaging the desk, an inverted cap for engaging the threaded lower end of the tubular member,a marginal flange on said cap for engaging the under side of the desk-top,teeth projecting upwardly from said iiange for engaging' the under side of the desk-top, and lugs projecting from the opposite sides of said cap.
