'ro ALL wHoMifr MAY concerns:
Be it known that I, HERBERT L.- ANDREWS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State ot' illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-Wells; and I do. declare that the following is a -full, clear, and exact description of thev construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure I is a top view, showing a portion of a desk, with the cover of the ink-well open.
Figure 2, a sectional view of the ink-reservoir.
Figure 3, a View of the coverC reversed.
Figure 4, a top view of guard. i
-Iiike letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
The objects of my inventionv will suiiicie'ntly appear from its description. It is principally designed for -and adapted to the use of schools. y
To enable others skilledin the art to make and use my improved ink-well, I proceed to'describe its construction and operation. v l A A-represents a portionof the top-oi` a school-desk. B is'the reservoir for the link, and may be made of glass or other suitable material. l As shown in figs. 1 and 2, this reservoir is providedwith a iiange or rim, 7c, at the top, on which are one or-more projections, a. D is a guard, made of cast iron, or other suitable material, by means of 4which. the reservoiris secured andA held in position. It is provided with one ormore recesses, n, corresponding with the projections a on the reservoir. The guard D is so constructed that where secured to the desk, and the reservoir is inserted through a hole in the deskprovided for that purpose, and of such size that the fiange It will reston the desk, the reservoir can he turned partially around. It then cannot be readily removed without reaching under the desk and turning the reservoir. This guard is provided with holes to receive screws Z m, by means of which it is fastened to the desk. At ZJ it is *countersunk to receive a correspending projection, c, on the cover O, which, with the screw, forms the joint for the cover. This guard is also provided with a point or projection, e, of peculiar construction. It has two lateral projections, f and g. TheV latter, y, also projects'upwards, and'is so arranged that when the cover is closed, the point d will strike against g, and, when the cover is opened, it strikes against g, so that. the cover cannet be turned around against the b ack of the desk either way. The projections and y furnish a suitable place for attaching a pen-wiper, by means of a rubber band rst secured to the wiper,'or in other proper manner. AFor this purpose, also, a hole may be made in e, or a small ring may be attached thereto. The cover C is also made of metal, corresponding in size to the guardD. It has a point, D, for the purpose mentioned. At h andare indentations adapted to receive a pen-holder, in which, when the coveris open, a pen maybe placed, keeping ink from the desk. The bottom, or the whole, of the indentation is corrugated, as shown, to be used as a pencil-Sharpener. This lelike eorrugation may be placed on one side of the guard D. My sliding cover I construct so vthat the top may be used as 'a' receptacle for steel pens. 'lhe cover may be so formed `and adjusted that, when open, thepointp will project over the edge ofthe reservoir, thus rendering it impossible to, remove it without first removing the c over. The screw] passes through both the cover C andV guard D, securing the latter'to the desk, and forming the pivot for the former.
.I sometimes 'construct my improved ink-well, dispensing with the projection d and indentation n, and so form the guard D that it secures the reservoir, so that it cannot be removed from the desk 'without first rem-oving the guard. i
Having thus'fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The reservoir B, provided with oneior more projections a, in combination with the guard D, provided with corresponding indentations, and annular grooves beneath, substantially as specified.
2. Raising'a' ridge or border around the upper surface ofthe lid or cover, so as to make it concave or dishform, to form a cup to holdloose pens, substantially as described. Y HERBERT L. ANDREWS.
