UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EVAN W. CORNELL, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JENNIE GAYLORD, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
(FOLDING CAMP-STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed June 22, 1903. Serial No. 162,533.
Be it known that LEVAN W. CORNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee,.State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Camp-Stools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a folding camp: stool; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a large and durable seat and simple and eflicient means for attaching the same to the legs of the stool to enable the seat to be readily re moved when desired and quickly and securely attached.
The above objectis attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a campstool embodying my invention and showing the doubling of the web or fabric in the construction of the seat. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the under face of one of the blocks to which the webbing or fabric of which the seat is composed is attached, showing the channeled socket which receives the tenon and pin of the leg. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through said block and the upper end of one of the legs. 4 is a perspective view of the upper end of a leg of the stool.
Referring to the characters of reference, 1 designates the legs, which are pivoted together at their longitudinal centers in any suitable manner. The upper end of each leg is provided with a tenon 2, having projecting laterally therefrom a pin 3. Adapted to fit upon the tenon of each leg is the block 4, havinga socket 5 to receive said tenon and having a channel 6 in the wall of the socket adapted to receive the pin 3 to allow the tenon to enter the socket in the block. For the purpose of securing the block to the leg and to prevent it from slipping ofl a circular way 7 is formed in the wall of the socket which communicates.
with the channel 6 and which allows the pin 3 to pass from said channel into said way as the block is turned, whereby the block becomes swiveled to the end of the leg and can only be removed by turning the block so as to cause the channel 6 to again register with the pin.
Secured to the blocks 4 is the webbing or fabric 8 of which the seat is formed and which may be in one strip, as shown. being diagonally folded when fastened to the blocks, or of a solid piece. The location of the channel '6 in each of the blocks is such that in order to place it in position to allow of the entrance of the pin 3 the block must be turned at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1, so that when all the blocks are in place upon the legs the tension of the fabric will draw equally upon the ends thereof and hold them in the locked position, as will be well understood. This arrangement enables the seat to be readily removed and quickly and easily replaced and when removed permits of the folding of the stool into a very small compass.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v In a camp-stool, the combination with the legs, each of which is provided with a tenon, and a pin projecting laterally from said tenon, a plurality of oblong blocks, each having a socket therein at its geometric center, a circular way in the wall of said socket, and a channel communicating with said way adapted to receive the pin of the tenon, whereby the blocks may be placed upon the tenons of the legs and rotatably locked thereto, and a.
fabric seat attached to said blocks to draw equally from theends thereof.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
EVAN W. CORNELL.
