UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SUPPORT FOR TUIVIBLERS AND LIKE RECEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed August 10, 1904.. Serial No. 220,271.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. Horn, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Asbury Park, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Tumblers and Like Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides an attachment for tumblers to enable a number of them to be conveniently carried one upon the other, thereby saving time in the serving of guests with water in hotels, cafes, restaurants, and dining-rooms, and obviates frequent trips of the waiter to effect such service.
The invention consists of atumbler having an annular support fitted to the lower end thereof, so as to be readily detached to admit of cleaning or to be dispensed with in the event of it being desired for any cause to have the tumbler free from the support.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
hile the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which i Figure 1 is a side elevation of a series of tumblers in superposed relation and provided with supporting means in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is adetail perspective View of the support, a portion being broken away. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified form of support. Fig. 4; is a detail perspective view of the modified form of support illustrated in Fig. 3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the following description and claims the term tumbler is used in a broad sense to designate a drinking-glass or similar recep tacle.
The support is indicated at 1 and is of annular formation to conform to the circumference of the tumbler. While it is preferred The support is widened or extended at its lower edge, as indicated at 2, and is comparatively thin at its upper edge, as indicated at 3, to admit of its vanishing into the sides of the tumbler and to readily conform to any irregularities, so as to obtain a snug fit at every point. By having the lower portion of the support expanded a shoulder or ledge is provided to engage over the upper edge of the tumbler arranged below the one provided with the support. Of the metals aluminium is preferred, because of its lightness and freedom from corrosive action. It is to be understood that if other metals are used in themanufacture of the support they may be coated, so as to prevent erosive action, either by means of moisture, the atmosphere, or other influences resulting from usage.
The support may be provided in sizes to fit standard tumblers or of any size to conform to special receptacles. The support is slipped upon the lower end of a tumbler and is pressed thereon soas to occupya position a short distance from the bottom. The upper flexible portion of the support grips the tumbler with sufficient friction to prevent casual displacement. However, the frictional contact may be increased by frosting or roughening the lower portion of the tumbler, as indicated at L. When a series of tumblers each provided with a support are placed one upon the other, as indicated in Fig. 1, the lower edge of the support of one tumbler engages over the upper edge of the tumbler next below, thereby sustaining the series in vertical relation and enabling a number to be carried in one hand without liability of displacement and at the same time preventing the water splashing over the edge of the tumblers.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and L the support is constructed of sheet material, which is spun or stamped in the form substantially as illustrated. This form of support is provided with an inner rim 5, having slits 6 extended upwardfrom its lower edge to form a plurality of spring portions 7,which grip the sides of the tumbler and hold the support thereto against possible casual displacement. This support may likewise be more cheaply manufactured, and the inner or gripping portion is more flexible than the form shown in Fig. 2-, hence will conform more readily to inequalities of the tumbler when fitting the support thereto. The outer portion of the support,being concave upon its lower face, conforms more nearly to the position thereon. a short distance from its,
lowerend, said annular support having an;
edge portion thin; and? flexible to readily con-- form to inequalities-in-the surface-of the tumbler, and having an outer supporting ledge or shoulder to. engage over the upper-edgeof a tumbler next below when a. series of turnblers are arranged one upon-the other;
2. A new articleof' manufacture, the same consisting of an annular support, of rigidmaterial having a fixed. diameter, tobe slipped upon the lower tapering portion of a flared tumbler to occupy a position a short distance from the lower end thereofi, said annulan sup.-
port having an edge portion thin and flexible to readily conform to inequalities in the surface of the tumbler, and having slits extended inward therefrom, and having the opposite edge portion extended outward to engage over the upper edge of a tumbler next below when a series of tumblers are arranged one upon the other.
3. In combination, a tumbler having the outside of its lower portionroughened or frosted, and anannulus slipped upon thelower end of thetumbler and held frictionally thereon and prevented from displacement by means ofthe said roughened part, said annulus having an outer extension toengage over the upperedge of a tumbler next below whenv a se-- ries of tumblers are arranged one upon the other;
