Be it known that I, Moses K, BLACKBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fredericlttown, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fence-posts.
It has for its object to provide a readily and cheaply constructed fence-post, to securely anchor or brace the fence-posts, and to provide for meetingcontingencies, as in building or erecting the fence where the ground or surface is hilly.
Said invention consists of the combination and. arrangement of part-s, substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed., and` particularly pointed out by the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 isaside elevation of tlielatter. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of a post. Fig. a cross-section thereof.
VIn the practicing of my invention I suitably erect`or plant the posts l in the ground and pass Vwire 2, forming each panel, back and forth through openings or holes 3 in said posts, suitably securing said wire at its ends to said posts. Said posts may have strung therebetween from their upper ends a top barb-equipped wire Je for'obvious purposes and are guyed or braced in position'by suitably wiring the saiiie, as at to anchors or boulders,-one or more, buried in the Surface or ground after securing the'wires or cables to said boulder or boulders by passing and twisting the lower portion about the boulder and twisting' the lower end into a substantial knot about the body of the wire just above the anchoring-boulder, said wires or cables being passed at their upper "portions through the desired holes 6 in said posts, according to the points it may be most ,eli'ective for that purpose. By suitably distributing the wirelength of the posts the wire for each panel may be passed or iovcd back and forth therethrough, with the strands or stringers thus formed removed a greater or less distance apart, as may be desired. Said arrangement if the wire-receiving openings or holes witli their oppositely-inclined entrance-slits provideas. for instance. where the posts are planted on a hillside or at the foot thereof-more readily than would otherwise permit for directing the wire into said openings and aiding the more effective holding thereof until the closing of said openings and even after such closing, as in passing' the wire upward through said openings and then in passing the said wire downward along the declivity, as in string-ing it between and uponsaid posts. After thus sti-inging or passing the wire the deected edge portions or walls 3C 3 ai'e returned to their former position or in alinement with the surface of the post, which may be readily effected by -improvising of a suitable piece of metal or iron an anvil and holding it against or upon one side'of tliepost and then hammering the del'lected portions of the entrance-slits of said openings into alinement edgewise with said post.
It will be noted that the use of staples and the like employed in the erecting ot' many kinds of fences is herein dispensed with, while the invention is characterized for great simplicity and clieapness'and is readily applied.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as they may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing fioiii the spirit of iiiy invention and the latter still be protected.
