IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-LOOKINGBOLT FOR METER'SFES.
dite rtrhult retentit tu im time @niet @anni initiating 'putt uf tiranni..
Be it known that I, lALONZO,lillruruar- ADAMS, of. the city and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Mode of Locking andv Securing Meter-Safes or casings containing meters or safety-guards, which I` propose to call Adams meterand safety-valve bolt-lock and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full,
elar, and exact description ofthe eonstruction'and operation of thesame, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specilcatiom in which` Figures 1 and V2 represent the different views of the bolt.
Figure 3 is a front View of'the safe when closed and locked, and
Figure 4 shows the situation of the safe and bolt, when the latter is in place, performing the functions of a perfect lock. u
The bolt,-sh own at lgs. `land 2, has a bead, made solid, and of the hardestv steel. 'The bolt is engraved U. S. Revenue, with afa@ simile of the inventors signature, at a point entirely concealed from view when in place, and where-it mustbe defaced or destroyedby the act of boring or cutting lthe same from the recess Ain 'the door. Anyother or additional device may be engraved uponit, or upon thelinner plates of the safe, for better security.
Theshaft' or 'shank A is armed with the spring-shoulders dd, resting upjon abutments nearthe end of the bolt, and held in place. bythe rivetsz'uz', whichyhowev'er, allow these'shoulders to be opened and closed by press# ure on thc spiral springs e e.
The drawings exhibit a square head andround shaft orsbankto the bolt A,`but i't may be made of any convvenient shape. 'Either the head or shaft should be made square, or of such form asto prevent'tlie samefrom lrolling or turning in the recess during the operation of ,boring the steel head, case it should become necessary for the proper authorities, by such means, to reach the meter, or other instrument enclosed, for any purpose of examination or adjustment. i
Theoperation of this bolt-lock is shown at fig. 4, in whichB represents the door of the meter-safe. F F are the npperand lower plates, which oughtto be, of the best cast iron or other-hard metal.- The door is xed, in the lower plate by the tongue and gro'ove,.show-niatj, whilethe bolt passes through the lugC, cast in the 'upper plate. AThe doorl andthe lug C are made to t accurately, as shown in the drawings, and are perforated-so as to admit the bolt a A. When this is forcediu the shouldersd d are expanded` by means of the springs'e e,
which effectually prevent the bolt frombeng withdrawn. The head of this bolt, fixed ina. 'recess and being made of steel and tempered to a high degree of hardness, cannot be bored or cut without great labor and4 time.
Thus it is obvious thatthis arrangement'aii'ords a perfect protection to the meterorother instrument enclosed in the safe, and renders it impossible to reach or tamper with it until the'proper authority shall causc it to be 'opened by the necessary violence. v
The drawings show but one bolt-locl ,'recess, Snc., to the door of the safe orguard-casing, but` it is designed that two or more sets of these locks or fastenings shall be employedfor each meter, safe,- or casing, designed for distilleries or other purpose, which, from its size, may'require the same for better security.
The safe or casingniay be wrought or cast 4in one piece, with an opening for the door and the worm, by
coring the mould, or itmay be cast in* separate parts, and put together by `flanges', bolts, or other equivalent inside fastenings. It may be so constructed as t'o conform to any shape or model of meter. orV safety-guard, and
its opening for the door and thejvorm of the distillery,` and the locks or fastenings, may lic-conveniently arranged in either sideor in the top or bottom of the same.
What I claim as my invention, and-desire to secureby Letters Patent, is'- 1. The bolt A and the devices attached thereto, or equivalents, as shown and described,
2. The safe or guard-casing, with its devices thereto attached, or equivalents, as shown and described.
3. The combination of the bolt A with Ithe safe or guard-casing, as represented in the speeications and in g. 4 of the drawings, or any equivalent for the same. i
