' J. ROCHE.
LOCK.
No. 470,413. V Patented Mar 8, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT Carton.
JAMES ROCHE, OE TERRYVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO II. B. PLUMB, OF SAME PLACE.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,413, dated March 8, 1892.
Application filed October 19, 1891. Serial No. 409,158. (No model.) 7
T at whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, J AMES ROCHE, of Terryville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification,
- and represent, in-
Figure 1, a View in vertical central section of alock having alock mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a detached view in front elevation of the cylindrical case of the lock mechanism; 3, a similar view with the pivotal tumblers removed to show the movable stump-carrier, and Fig. 4: a detached perspective view showing the movable stump-carrier and the coup -l1n g-bar.
My invention relates to an improvementin that class of locks in which the latch is isolated from the lock mechanism proper and connected therewith by a coupling-bar, the object being to provide an inexpensive but effective substitute for the costly lock mechanism now employed in this class of locks.
' \Vith these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with a cylindrical case, of a coupling-bar entered thereinto, a movable stump-carrier located in the bottom of the said case, rigidly secured to the said bar, and furnished with a stump, pivotal tumblers located within the case and co-operating with the said stump, and a latch receiving the opposite end of the said bar.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
As herein shown, the moving parts of the lock mechanism are contained in a shallow cylindrical case A, secured within a chamber B, formed in the door C, to which the lock is applied by means of two sharpened cams D D, swiveled by beveled studs D D upon the outer face of the inner end of the said case and adapted when turned, as shown by Fig.
1 of the drawings, to penetrate the wood, and so hold the case in place. The open outer end of the case is provided with a removable escutcheon E of ordinary construction and provided withakey-holeE. (Indicated by broken lines in Fig. l.) A coupling-bar F, entered into the bottom of the case through an opening formed in the center thereof, is provided at its inner end with a movable stump-carrier, which consists in part of a fiat plate, having a circular central portion G and a seg- 6o mental flange H, the outer edge of the latter conforming to the inner circle of the case, and its ends H H forming stops engaging with the studs I and J, mounted in the case to limit the movements of the said carrier in either direction. The said carrier also consists of a circular plate K, secured to the back of the plate just mentioned and holding the same from the bottom of the case.
WVhile I have described and shown the stump-carrier as being made of two plates, it may, if desired, be made in one piece. It is provided with a stump L, and with a central key-seat comprisinga circular opening M, extending through both plates to receive the end of the key-shank, and with a segmental opening M"extending only through the outer plate and receiving the key-bit. The pivotal tumblers N of the lock are hung upon the stud I, and each is provided with an operatingspring N Each tumbler is also constructed with an opening 0 to receive the stump. The number of these tumblers and the form of their openings may be varied, as desired.
As herein shown, the coupling-bar F and the movable stump-carrier attached to it are secured to the case, so as to be rotatable therein, by means of a pin P, (shown in Fig. lot the drawings,) passing through an opening P, formed in the coupling-bar,the ends of the 0 pin bearing against the outer face of the case. The outer end of the coupling-bar F is entered into the latch, in which it is adjustable, so that the device will accommodate itself without change to doors of different thickness. 5
I do not herein claim any particular 0on struction of latch, as any suitable form may be used. The latch that I have shown is constructed in accordance with the invention disclosed in my application filed March 2, I00 1891, Serial No. 383,337, and contains a centering-bOSS Q, a hollow sheet-metal roll-back tumblers such as I use are less liable to deran gement than pin-tumblers and do not wear as they do. w
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
' Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, withacylindrical case, ofa coupling-bar entered into the bottom thereof, a movable stump-carrier located in the bottom of the said case, rigidly secured to the said bar, furnished with a stump, and constructed with a key-seat, pivotal tumblers located within the case and co-operating with the said stump, and a latch receiving the opposite end of the said bar, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a cylindrical case, ofa coupling-bar entered into the bottom thereof, a movable stump-carrier located in the bottom of the case, rigidly secured to the inner end of the said bar, provided with a stump, and constructed with a key-seat, pivotal tumblers located within the case and cooperating with the said stump, and a latch receiving the opposite end of the said bar and constructed to permit the same to be adjusted therein, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with acylindrical case, of a coupling-bar entered into the bottom thereof, a movable stump-carrier located in the bottom of the said case, rigidly secured to the said bar, furnished with a stump, and having a substantially circular central portion furnished with a segmental flange and constructed with a central key-seat, and a latch receiving the opposite end of the said bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ROCHE.
