To all whom it 'n'tay concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER PRoU'rY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stay-Wire-Applying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire-working devices designed especially for use in the construction of wire fences, and has for its objeots to produce a comparatively simple i11- expensive device of this character whereby the stay-wires may be readily applied to the line-wires, one in which the stay-Wire will be securely held during the coiling operation, and one wherein the device may be readily applied to or removed from the line-wires.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a wire fence, showing the device embodying the invention applied for use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the wire-holding member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the line or strand wires secured in any suitable manner to the post 2, and 3 the stay or filler wires extended vertically between and secured upon the line-wires, these parts being of the usual or any approved construction and material.
For applying the filler-wires 3 to the linewires I provide an improved device 4, comprising a frame-bar or member 5, having at one end an angularly-bent portion or handle 6 and at its other end a shaft or spindle 7, upon which is mounted for rotation a drum or reel 8, provided with heads 9, said reel being adapted to carry a supply of wire for forming the filler-wires 3.
Bolted to the frame-bar 5 is an engaging member, preferably composed of a length of strap metal 10, bent outwardly and inwardly, as at 11, to provide an engaging finger, which in practice seats over the line-wires l for supporting the device thereon, the member 10 being preferably spaced from the bar 5 by means of spacing members or washers 12, arranged upon the bolts 13 and subserving a purpose which will more fully hereinafter appear.

at a point beneath the member 10, is a wireholding member 14, formed form strap metal and having at its lower end an outturned portion or finger 15 and between its ends a stud or projection 16, there being formed at the normally outer side edge of the member 14 a transverse bearing portion or extension 17, the active face of which is rounded, as seen in Fig. 4.
In practice the device 4 is arranged in position upon one of the line-wires 1 by seating the engaging finger 11 over the wire, thus rotatively supporting the device upon the latter, attention being directed in this connection to the fact that the wire-holding member 14 has its upper end projected into the space behind the linger 11, thereby constituting a bearing for the line-wire during rotation of the device, and that the bearing portion of the member 14 is rounded,as at 18, as seen in Fig. 4. After seating the device upon the line-wire the wire from the reel is led diagonally between the linger15 and stud 16 to bear upon the inner edge of the former and the outer side of the latter, whereby it is maintained in proper position to be coiled upon the linewires and is also prevented from binding in the engaging portion of the member 10. The parts having been adjusted as just described, the handle 6 is grasped and the device 4 as a whole rotated upon the line-wire as an axis, thereby forming a wrap or coil of the wire 3 upon the line-wire, the wire 3 during the coiling operation being guided upon and fed. freely over the bearing portion 17. It is to be observed that when small gage-wire is to be employed for the line-wires 1 the washers 12 may be removed, thus permitting the member 10 to approach closer to the bar 5 for properly regulating the wire-engaging space of the member 10, and that in instances where a heavy gage-wire is employed washers 12 of a greater thickness may be applied to the bolts. It may be mentioned that in forming the initial coil of the stay-wire 3 upon the top line-wire 1 the free end of the wire 3 may be engaged and held by a pair of pliers during the rotation of the device in forming the coil, and, further, that after a coil has been formed upon one of the line-wires the device may be readily disengaged therefrom and seated upon the next adjacent line-wire, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple efiicient device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view,
it being understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
