v GEORGE II: MILLER, OF NORVVALK, OHIO.
COMBINED FENCE-WIRE REEL AND STRAIGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,476, dated June 23, 1896.
Application filed March 25, 1896.
T0 00% whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE II. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk,in the county of I-Iuron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Fence-Tire Reel and Straightener; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appe'rtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to combined fencewire reels and straighteners.
The object of my invention is to produce an inexpensive reel that, by its construction, will straighten plain fence-wire coiled thereon, simultaneously with its withdrawal therefrom.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of one of my combined fence-wire reels and straighteners. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base; Fig. 3, a plan view of the straightener, and Fig. 4 an end view of the last-mentioned device.
Similar letters and figures of reference, where they occur, denote like parts in all the views.
A refers to a base, which consists of two pieces of plank halved together with a bolt or pivot hole a therethrough, and having three short portions a and a long portion or extension a, the latter having a short post a mounted on the end thereof.
13 represents a wire straightener, which consists of duplicate spaced plates 6, each provided near one of its edges and a distance from either end thereof with a hole 1, and having substantially in alinement therewith a central hole 2, and further provided with a central slot 3, adjacent to the opposite edge thereof. A number of small metal wheels bpreferably three-eacl1 provided with a peripheral groove 5 and a hub or central opening 19, which wheels 1') are triangularly placed between the spaced plates b, two of which are secured in place therein by means of rivets or small bolts b, passing through the coinciding holes 1 and the hub-opening 19 thereof, while the remaining wheel I) is an no. 584,791. (No model.)
adjustably secured in place by means of a small bolt 6, passing through the coinciding slots 3 and the hub-opening b, whereby the straightener may be adjusted to accommodate different sizes of wire, and which when in operative position is adj ustably secured to the top of the post a, found on the end of the extension a of the base A, by means of a small bolt b and the coinciding central holes 2 thereof, whereby the said straightener may be made to accommodate the wire while being drawn tangentially off the reel therethrough.
0 represents the upper portion of the reel, made in the usual manner with upwardlyextended arms 0, for holding the wire thereon.
D refers to a pivot around which the portion 0 revolves and which passes through and is held in place by the hole a in the base A, above described.
I am aware that neither wire-reels nor wirestraighteners, as independent devices, are entirely new. In practice the trouble comes from want of suitable means or opportunity in trying to so place and secure such separate devices in juxtaposition that the straightener may tangentially take the wire simultane ously with its withdrawal from the reel.
It is evident that the reel and straightener must be in alinement and in close proximity and work as a unit, or the wire will turn and twist and be difficult to straighten.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination of the reel and the cross-shaped base having an extension and the short post mounted thereon, with the wire-straightener pivotally mounted on the post, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the reel 0 having arms 0 for holding the wire thereon, the base having an extension a and the short post a mounted on the end thereof, with the wire straightener B having grooved wheels I) trian gularly disposed therein, adj ustably mounted on the post, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix-my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
GEORGE H. MILLER.
