Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed October 19,19041. Serial No. 229,060.
To (L7/Z [071/0711, iff: '11m/,U concer/t:
.Be itknown that I. HIGNR L. FnRRIs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Harvard, in the county oi McHenry and State oi' illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-I-Ieaters, oit which the following' is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tank-heaters; and its object is to produce a device of this class which shall have certain advantages which will appear more Jully and at large in the course of this specification.
To this end my invention consists incertain novel features, which are shown in the accompanying drawings as embodied in my preferred form of construction.
1n the aforesaid drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved tank-heater. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section in the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the device. Fig. 4c is a horizontal section in the line 4i 4i of Fig. 1. Fig. is a horizontal section in the line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is an under plan view with the base-plate removed, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the removable draft-partition and shaker.
Referring to the drawings, A isabase made in the iorni of a circular plate of metal with an upturned edge or flange c. Upon this base rests the body B of my improved device, the same being centered on the base by radiallyprojecting ribs?) and secured to the base by screws o', passed through projecting ears o2 on the body of the heater and into the base. The base, it will be seen, can thus be removed at will. The body B, it will be seen, is cylindrical in it'orm and provided with a laterallyextending annular portion B and with a radhilly-projecting vertical iiue B, which terminates at and opens into the annular space B. The space within the Hue B2 is separated from the cylindrical portion of the heater by a removable partition B, formed Yfrom a plate oi sheet metal held in place between lugs 7).
1n the lower part of the body B is an ashpot C, provided with a handle by which it can be removed, and above this ash-pot is supported a fuel-basket D. This basket, it will be seen, has an outwardly-turned ilange (Z, which rests upon lugs 1, cast on the wall o'tl the body B, so as to support the basket substantially on a level with the annular portion l. The basket D is substantially cylindrical in form and perforated on the sides to form a grate. The bottom 1.) of the basket, which is circular in form, rests upon a i'lange (Z, extending' inward from the side walls oi the basket, and is rotatable thereon by means of a shaker E, extending along the outer side ot' the partition B3 and pivoted thereto. This shaker has a handle e at the upper end, which extends `from the top of theheater. Thelower end oll the shaker extends inward under the edge of the partition B, which is cut away 'for this purpose and is turned up at c to engage with any one of the pertorations in the bottom oi' the basket. Nhen this shaker is rotated, it will be obvious that the bottom oi| the basket will be rotated and thematter within the tire-pot will be agitated to shake out the ashes.
F indicates the top of my improved heater,
which is provided with a handle f, by which it can be lilted oiii' to remove the basket and ash-pot. This cover is provided with a per- `lorationf, which registers with the top oi' the liuc and with a second perforation f, operating as a check-vent. A damper F/ is provided which will operate to close either or both oiI said perforations, as desired.
' 1 realize that considerable variation is possible in the details ot' this construction without departing `from the spirit oi' my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specilic 'torni herein shown and described.
Il claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a device oi? the class described, the combination with the body oi: a tank-heater, of a base-plate upon which said body rests, ears upon the body, screws extending through said ears and into the hase, an ash-pot within the bottom ol2 the body, a lire-pot removably supported within the body above the ash-pot, an inlet-flue opening :from the lower portion oi the body adjacent to the fire-pot, a cover for the body and a suitable outlet-liuc.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with the body oi a heater, having a radial projection forming an inlet-tine, oi' a removable partition cutting' ott the space within `said projection from the body of the heater, a lire-pot within the heater, a rotatable bottom in the lire-pot, and a shaker pivoted to said removable partition and engaging with the rotatable bottom.
1n a device oi the class described, the coinbination with a cylindrical, heater-body, of au ash-pot in the bottom thereof and a lire-pot of substantially the same internal diamete as the body, Said body having` an annular Swell at the level of the fire-pot and not extending below the same and an inlet-'Hue in communi* cation with Said annular swell.
4. In a device ofthe class described, the coinbination with the body of a tank-heater having` radially-projecting` ribs at its lower end, of a base-plate upon which the body rests having an upturned peripheral Llange to engage said ribs to center the body, ears upon the body, screws extending through said ears and into the base, an ash-pot Within the bottom of the body, a lire-pot removably supported HENRY L. FERRIS.
