Description

v. SPINDLER.
, STOVE. (A mm flledM (No Model.)
YEA @2070 Patented Dec. I9, I899.
UNITED STATES PATENT Garrett.
VALENTINE SPINDLER, OF SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 639,624, dated December 19, 1899. Application filed March 23,1899. Serial No. 710,201. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE SPINDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to stoves, and has particular reference to a stove designed for burning either soft or hard coal.
The essential objects of my invention are to so construct a stove that more perfect com-' bustion will be had than heretofore has been attained and to form a stove of few and simple parts which will admit of its being manufactured at small cost.
' With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction of the stove and in'the peeuliararrangement of the various parts thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section through the stove. Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the stove-top shown in a different position, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the stove with the cover removed.
The letter A designates a stove comprising an outer cylindrical casing B and an inner casing O, of less diameter than the outer, concentrically arranged therein, forming an annular air-chamber D. The inner casing is provided with a flange a, which is secured to the sides of the casing B, and with uprights Z), having inwardly-extending bent. portions 0, upon which is arranged the usual fire-grating cl. The outer casing is provided with a series of perforations e, through which the air is adapted to pass.
E designates the ash-door of the stove, and F designates the smoke-pipe, communicating with the interior of the stove, through the side thereof, at some distance below the top.
The outer casing B extends above and beyond the inner casing and is provided with a dome-shaped top F, in which is formed a feedopening G and a check-opening H, the openings being preferably diametrically arranged, as shown in Fig. 1.
I designates a cover for the stove, conforming in configuration to the dome-shaped top of the stove-body and having a central pivotal connection with said top, the connecting device being an ordinary bolt or screwf. This cover is provided with an opening J therein, and K is the handle attached to the cover for the purpose of rotating the same about its pivotal point of connection. When fuel is desired to be supplied to the stove, the cover I is rotated until the opening therein registers with the feed-opening in the top of the stove-body. l/Vhile burning, the stove-cover is partly drawn over the feed-opening and the door E left partly open, whereby a strong draft is produced in the stove. Sufficient combustion takes place to consume the soot that ordinarily adheres to the smoke-pipe in the interior of the stove, and the draft is sufficient to prevent the gases from escaping into the room through the opening. In case the stove becomes overheated the cover I is ro-' tated until the opening therein registers with the check-openingin the stove-top, a shorter passage being thus formed for the air into the smoke-pipe, and the stove is quickly cooled.
It will be observed from the foregoing description of my invention that means have been provided for producinga greater draft, and hence better combustion, within the stove and that the latter is formed of but few and simple parts. Moreover, a peculiar type of cover is employed for the stove, which may be used for covering either one or both of the openings in the stove-top, it being obvious from the construction of the parts that when the opening in the cover is midway between the opening formed in said stove-top the latter opening will be covered.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination with the stove-body having a controlled draft-opening formed in the front thereof below the grate, a stove-top having formed therein a feed-opening for the fuel and a single check-opening, and asmokepipe communicating with the interior of the stove-body at the side of the latter and below the check-opening in the top.
2. In a stove, the combination with a stovebody, a top therefor having a feed-opening and a single and independent check-opening formed therein, and a cover swiveled over the stove-top for rotary movement in a horizontal plane, said cover having an opening therein I adapted to be registered alternately with the openings in the stove-top, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a stove, the combination of a cylindrical stove-body provided with a controlled draft-opening below the grate and having formed in the top afeed and a check opening,
said opening being diametrically arranged, a smoke-pipe communicating with the interior of the bodyat one side thereof and below the check-opening and a cover swiveled upon the body over the opening in the body-top adapted when rotated to cover one or both of the openings.
4. In a stove, the combination of a cylindrical stove body provided with a dome-
