Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application tiled November 8, 1904. Serial No. 231,924.
To all 'loll/0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jol-1N GUs'rAF Saonnne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specication.
ll/.ly invention relates to clamps; and its primary object is to provide a new and useful device of this character adapted to be used to secure the hatch-covers used upon ships carrying oil and other liquids in such positive closed position that all leakage is prevented.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clamp which can be easily and cheaply manufactured, which is simple of construction, and which is composed of few parts, so arranged and constructed as not to be liable to become broken or inoperative.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a clamp which when not in use may be thrown in such position as not to interfere with the turning of the hatch upon its hinges to clear the hatch-opening.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which show the preferred form of my invention, and wherein- Figure l is a sectional view through a portion of the deck of a vessel, hatch-coaming, and hatch-cover, showing the application of my improved clamp in position to secure the hatch-cover in applied position against leakage. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 a top plan View.
Referring' to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 designates the deck of a vessel provided with the usual hatch-opening, about which is secured the hatch-coaming 2. Pivotally secured to the coarning 2 is a hatchcover 3, which is provided on its under surface with a strengthening-bar 4, recessed, as shown at 5, for the reception of a gasket 6, adapted to engage the upper edge of the coaming 2. The edges of the hatch-cover 3 project laterally beyond the eoaming 2, and to provide for the reception of a portion of the clamp to permit of its application said lateral edges are provided with recesses 7.
My improved clamp comprises three elements-a base or bracket 8, a link 9, pivotally secured to said bracket, and an actuating arm. or lever 10, eccentrically and pivotally secured to the upper end of said link 9. The
base or bracket 8 comprises a horizontallydisposed portion adapted to be secured to the upper surface of the deck by means of bolts and nuts 'l1 or their equivalent and ears l2, rising vertically from said horizontally-disposed portion and arranged in parallelism. The ears 1Q are provided with alining openings for the reception of a pivotpin 13, which passes through the lower end of the link 9 to pivotally secure the same to the base or bracket 8. The actuating arm or lever 10 is provided with a head la bifurcated for the reception of the upper end of the link il, to which the actuating arm or lever is eccentricall y pivoted by means of a pivot-pin l5. This manner of connecting the actuating arm or lever l0 to the link 9 provides a canihead which is provided with cam-faces 16, which are adapted to be brought into engagement with the upper surface of the hatchcover 3 to securely force the latter down into closed position to prevent all liability of any leakage between the gasket 6 and the hatchcoarning 2.
It will be understood that as many of these clamps are to be used as is found necessary. The base or bracket 8 is preferably secured to the deck of a vessel directly under the recess 7, so as to permit the link 9 to be moved into the recess to place the cam-heads 141: upon the upper surface of the hatch-cover 3. When the cam-head is thus disposed, the actuating arm or lever l0 is turned upon its pivot-pin to bring the cani-faces 16 into engagement with the upper surface of the hatchcover 3, which causes the hatch-cover to be forced downward upon the upper edge of the coaming 2 with such positiveness that all liability of leakage is obviated. -In order to assist the turning of the actuating arm or lever 10 either to lock the hatch-cover or to remove the clamp, said arm or lever is provided with a socket '1,7, into which a lever may be inserted. `When it is desired to remove the clamps to permit the hatch-cover to be swung upon its hinges, the actuating' arm or lever l0 is swung in the reverse position upon its pivot-pin, which will move its cam-faces up out of engagement with the hatch-cover, after which the clamp lnay be swung into the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, in which position it is out of the way and will not interfere with the free operation of the hatchcover.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction and mode of operation of the inventionwill be understood without a further extended description. Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made Within the scope of the invention Without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new isi*- In a device of the character described, a hatch-coarning, a hatch-cover, and a clamp comprising` a base, a link pivotally secured thereto, and a cani-head pivotally secured to said link and adapted to engage the hatchcover, said cam-head being formed With a socket to receive a removable lever' substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence o'f two Witnesses.
