. SWITCH-THROWER.
FRED, .POGGEMEYER, or 000K; NEBRASKA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1917.
Application filed August 4, 1915. Serial No. 43,640.
i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED POGGEMEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cook, in the county of Johnson, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Throwers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in switch openers or throwing mechanism designed for throwing a switch point from the platform of the car by the motorman.
The essential object of the invention is evolved in the provision of novel and improved means of the above character which includes a switch block of novel form and pivotally supported to be raised and lowered when moved to its operative or inoperative positions, said block being capable of lateral movement to follow the track and maintain the switch point in one position, while means are also provided for holding the device positively in an elevated position or inoperative.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides more particularly in the particular combinations and arrangements of parts which will be partly illustrated as a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification, although the .invention is protected for all desirable changes and uses within the scope of theinvention as claimed.
Figure l is a side elevation of a fragmentary portion of a car and its platform with the improved switch opener or throwing mechanism applied thereto, the same being shown in an inoperative position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the supporting bar and its associated parts.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device with the platform in phantom.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 41 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 5 is a view of a spring clip employed in connection with the invention.
In illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, a fragmentary portion of a car is indicated by the numeral 11, the
whereby the rod is adapted for vertical pivotal movement or lateral turning through the instrumentality of the loose connection of the bracket. The free end of the rod 15 is connected to the lower end of a plunger or rod 17 which operates vertically through the platform in rear of the dash-board, the same being detachably connected as shown at 18 to a casting 19, the lower end of the rod having a squared socket engaging a ver tical pin 20 of a switch block 21, the parts being connected by a coupling pin 22.
The switch block 22 is of triangular form in plan and has its point or toe portion 23 considerably higher than the heel portion or rear end 24 so as to effectually throw the switch point without catching the projections or slight inaccuracies in the track structure. The rod 17 is operable through the medium of a handle or grip 25 attached to its upper end whereby the switch block may be lowered for shifting or opening the switch point, but in order to hold the plunger in an elevated or inoperative position, an enlargement 26 is provided thereon to en gage between the spaced side portions or bifurcations 27 of a spring lock 28 attached to and projecting inwardly from the dashboard. This lo'cking member has an attaching plate 29 and its spring portions are bent outwardly and then inwardly as shown at 30 to receive and hold the rod therebetween. It is of course understood that the particular sizes of the parts and their arrangement may be changed to adapt the same to the particular type of car as falls within the scope of the device as claimed.
I claim:
In a switch operating mechanism], the combination with a car platform; of a rod having one end pivoted to said platform, a casting secured to the free end of said rod and having a bearing, a switch block having switch block may be rotated in said bearing. a pin rotatable in said bearing, a second rod In testimony whereof, I afiix my signaextending through said platform, and means ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
detachably connecting one end of said sec- FRED POGGEMEYER. 5 0nd rod with said pin whereby the first Witnesses:
named rod may be adjusted to raise and P. H. NAEVE,
lower the switch block and whereby said H. L. NIEMANN.
