Be itknown that 1, JOHN R. liflnnnnx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Tm provements in Folding Boxes; and :l do hereby declare the following to be a full; clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in folding boxes; and the object of my invention is to produce a neat and cheap folding box and one which when unfolded for the purpose of holding articles will not have any creases in its sides and will be rigid and substantial.

My box is especially designed for collapsible boxes and is usually made of pasteboard; but obviously it is not confined to this use, and it may be made of any desired material.

With these objects in View my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In Fig. 3, (0 represents the bottom of the box, provided with slits Z), cut-away portions 0, and flaps (Z, located on two sides thereof, said flaps being beveled off toward one end. The main portion of the blank is divided into a number of parts a, f, g, and it, preferably four, although any number may be used. The part c is provided with a flap 71, located on its end. The partfis provided with a flap 7', located on its side. The part g is provided with an extension k on its side, cut away, as shown at Z, and beveled off, as shown at m, and the part It is provided with an extension n. with its sides cut away, as shown at 0. The dotted lines in ll ig. 3 represent creases or scored marks.

As said before, the body portion of the box is usually made of a single blank. (Shown in Fig. 3). After the blank has been stamped out the four parts 8, f, g, and it are bent around to form a rectangle, the flap 't' overlapping the end of the part it and being pasted or otherwise secured thereto. The box may then be folded into the position shown in Fig. 2. In case, however, extra large sizes of boxes are to be made the body portion can be stamped out of one or more blanks, which can then be attached together by gluing or in any other way, as desired. in all ordinary cases the body portion is made of a single blank.

To unfold the box ready for use, it is simply necessary to open the box and push the bottom down, whereupon the corners 1 and 1' will pass through the slits I) in the bottom of the box, firmly locking the same in position. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A body-blank for a box having a creased bottom, made in one piece and provided with slits inclined with relation to the crease in said bottom, and parts arranged to fold up to form the sides of the box, two of said parts being provided with extensions adapted to readily engage the slits in the bottom of the box when the box is unfolded, said extensions acting as stilfeners or braces for the bottom of the box, substantially as described.

2. A body-blank for a box composed of a creased bottom made in one piece and provided with one or more flaps and also provided with slits arranged at an angle to the crease in said bottom, and four parts arranged to fold up to form the sides of the box, two of said parts being provided with flaps and the other two of said parts being provided with extensions terminating in pointed portions adapted to readily engage the slits in the bottom of the box when the box is unfolded, said bottom and side parts being separated from each other by creases, and said extensions serving to strengthen the bottom of the box, substantially as described.

A box-body including four parts adapted to form the sides of the box, one of said parts being provided with a flap adapted to fold against another of said parts, a second one of said parts being provided with a flap adapted to engage the bottom of said box, a creased bottom made in one piece and provided with slits arranged at an angle to the crease in said bottom and provided with a plurality of flaps, and extensions carried by two of said side parts adapted to readily engage the slits in the bottom of the box when the latter is unfolded, substantially as described.

4. A box-body composed of four parts adapted to fold up into a rectangle to form the sides of said box, one of said parts being provided with a flap adapted to engage another of said parts when the box is made up, a second one of said parts being provided with a flap adapted to engage the bottom of said box when the box is made up, and the other two parts being provided with extensions terminating in sharp points, a bottom for said box provided with slits and cut-away portions and having flaps on one or more of its sides, and a stop secured to one of said sides and adapted to engage one of said flaps when the box is opened to secure the same in its opened position, substantially as described.
