IMPROVEMENT .1N oit-CAN TUBES.
Etgrztetule mgmt tn'iuittgest Enters tteut tu): mating peut ai tte stuur.'
To ALL WHCMIT MAYCCNCEEN: t
Be it known that I, EDGAR B. BEACH, of West Meriden, in th'c county ot' New Haven, and State of Con-v necticut, have invented anew Improvementin Oil-Can Tubes and I do'hereby declare the following,`t vhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a. full, clear, and exact-description of the same, and which said-drawings constitute port of thisl speciication, und represent, in'.
Figure 1, a side View, and in Figure 2 a. vertical central section. This invention relates to an improvement in the article of manufacture known to the trede as oil- Can tubes, that is to say, tubes to be attached to Acans for lli'ng lamps, and consists in the attachment of a. spouth to the tube, combinedftvith a valve illing the tube, andmoving..axially therein, so as to open and close the spout as occasion ymay require.- l tl In order to the clear understanding of Amy invention, I will fully describe the same as illustrated in the i 1 uecompanyiu drawings.
A is the can-tube, of common construction. .Tothis I attach, near its upper end, a spout, B, communicating with the tube A, us seen in iig. 2, and within the tube I arrange avalve, C, upon a rod, provided with ,u head, E, which said valve llsthc tube, but by means of the head E may bc'moved freely up and vdown within the tube-'-up to the position'in red to 'open the tube, and down, as denoted in iig. 2, to close Athe tube.
The tubes A are constructed or,formed at the lower end for attachment to the can, and in this form are furnished tothe trade, and lsold to manufacturers of cans, 'to beattaehed to oilcans of any construction.
It is necessary, as is well known, that some means be devised to close the tube when the can is not employed -for pouring the`oil, in order to prevent evaporation.` This valve aiiords a simple and convenient method, `and one' which cannot be'derangeiand adds but slightly to the cost of manufacture, so 'that I am enabled to produce this article vat a slight advance from the common plain tube.Y
I am aware that various devices have been applied to spouts of oil-cans to stop the same, ns may be seen in the lpatent to J. R.l Nichols, September 30, 1853, and G.. A.V Knowlton, December 10, 1867, therefore I do not claim such broadly, or as shown in the said patents.
Having thusfully described my invention, whatI claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described tube, as an article of manufacture, consisting of the tube A, spout B, valve C with n the head E,` the said valve arranged in the tube A. in such relative position te the spout B, as to open and close the spout, and all constructed and arranged in the manner set forth.
