ValvKed Oil-Can Nozzles.
N0. 128,473. Patentedl'uly 2,1872.

VUNITEE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD J. DURANT, OFVLEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN VALVED'OlL-CAN NOZ-ZLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,473, dated July 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. DURANT,
of Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and' description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a portion of this specification.
My improvement in the spouts of oil-cans consists in an undetachable combination of a peculiar-shaped cap, b, with a peculiar-shaped eduction-end of the spout of that description of oil-cans that are used for filling lamps with oil or other burning fluid. The extreme end of the spout a is closed, and an aperture, e, is formed on the under side of the end portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. 'The cap b corresponds in shape with that of the end portion of the spout a, and it also has a lateral aperture of similar size and shape to that in the spout 3 but the size of said cap is suchthat it can be received on the end of the spout, and when so placed will tit closely thereon. When the cap b is turned to the position shown in Fig. 1 the lateral aperture therein will be exactly coincident with the lateral aperture in the end portion of the spout, and consequently, when thuslturned, a free aperture for the escape of the oil from the can will be formed, and of such a shape and location as will cause the oil to flow vertically and unerringly into the lamp, whatsoever'the amount of force with which it may flow from the can. When thelar groove, c, of sufficient depth to extend into the cap b, as shown in- Fig. 1; or the said cap may be secured to the spout by an exterior swaging process 5 or said undetachable connection between the cap and spout may be formed by any other means. The -cap b may be arrested at its proper open and closed positions on the spout a by means of a recess in a portion of the inner end of said cap and a pin, d, projecting from the side of said spout, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention- My improved oil-can7 said can having a vapor-tight and undetachable combination of the spout a thereof with its closing-cap b, produced by a concavo-convex swaging process, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that the aforegoin g is a full and clear specication of my improvement in the spouts of oil-cans I hereunto subscribe my naueehis 19th day of April, 1872.
