Description

IMPRGVEMENT I THE CONSTRUCTION' 0F OII.GANS.`
filge .tlgthul refrrteh tu it iljrstet-ters atmt mit making part uf the same.
TOALL WHOM' IT MAY CON CERN Beit known that I, HIRAM B. WELLMN, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the `accompanying drawings, and the lettersiof reference marked thereon. v
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specifica-tion, A represents a can, of any desired dimensions or shape, and B B represent tanks or chambers, attached to saidtcnn. lThe tanks or chambers are ordinarily madeto" hold about one halt"` pintand of any shape desired, and may be of any required dimensions. C represents the spout or nozzleof the can, leading directly from the upper chamber B.
The chambers Bf have openings x :vfivhich extend across t0 near the front .side of said chambers, as shown. The. pipe leading into the upper chamber extends` from and connects with the-lower-chamber, andthe pipe leading into the lower chamber connects with the oil-can Before using, Asuilcientwater should bepoured into thecan to fill the lower 'chamber one-half or two-thirds full. When theican is tilted, in the act of pouring out the o l, whatever water passes oht of thle lower chamber will be caught in the upper one, which prevents its escape at the spout. It', however, some'watervV by chance should escape, it would not ai'ect theV result. v'
It will be seen that in pouring oil from this can it must pass through the watch-chamber, and the water in said. chamber, acting asa cut-oli" between the oil in thec n and that in the spout,` protects the same against explosion, 4 'i v Y Having thus fully describedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Thense of water-chambers, so combined with an oil-can that the oilfrom said can must pass through the water in itstpassage to the spout, asand for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 5th day of March, 1868.
