IMPROVBD SORGHUlltl-VAPORATORi` Bc it-known that I,'B. R. HAWLEY, ci' Normal, in the county of McLean, and State of Illinois,- have invented a new and useful improvement in Evaporators; and I do hereby declare ,that the following isa full and clear description thereot', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. I
This invention relates, rstly,to an outsidcpocliet, attached to th'e side of the boiling-pan, and through the side wall ot which an aperture is made into theysaid pocket, at or near its bottom. The outside wall ofthe pocket extends up higher than theside wall of the boiler, which forms the partition between it aud the said pocket. This construction allows the boilingiiuid from the boiler to ilow over into the pocket, where it becomes cooled and settles downward, by reason of its increased specific gravity, and then again enters the boiler, at or near its bottom, through the aforesaid aperture. After re-entering the boiler the iluid again becomes heated, and rises to the surface, 4to again flow over into the pocket, and thus a continuous upward andl downward ow is maintained during the whole of the boiling process.' The pocket formed, as above described,v may have a strainer placed over its top, so as to exclude the coarser impurities of the boiling scum, and its entire cavity may be filled with raw wool, as a iiltering material.
This invention also relates to a cooler for receiving the finished sirup, land retaining it until cooled off preparatory to its package for market or use. The details of the mechanical construction of the improved parts will bc clearly understood by reference to`ithe accompanying drawings. As it is the purpose ofthe inventor to apply these improvements to an evaporator patented by himself on the rst day. of May, A. D. 1866, and numbered '54,340, the said evaporator, so patented, will be herein represented and described, so far as may be necessary to the illustration of the present invention. -It is not, however, to, be understood that the improvements herein described are to be exclusively employed on the said evaporator,but are to be equally applicable to any other form of evaporator-s. -A i To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improved evaporator, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the drawings, A represents the primary'boiler, B the defecator, and C the finishing-pan. The construc= tion and arrangement of the foregoing' parts are much the same as similar parts in the former patent. In the present instance, however, a iluid-chamberlis left between the front ofthe fire-box and the wooden wall enclosing the same, as well as the tno chambers at the sides of the fire-box, as in the former patent. The general construc tionand arrangement of `the primary boiler A, the defecator B, and the finishing-pan C are much the same as vthey were in the former patent. The first and principal feature of the improvement consists in adding to the sides of the primary boiler, and to the defecator, an external pocket, D, which may be made of sheet metal and securely aiixed to the exterior face of the wooden enclosing wall, through which an aperture, d, is made at or near the bottom of the said pocket. The said filtering 'material maybe of raw wool, or any equivalent material.
I ampcrfectly well aware that raw wool, as a iiltering material for sirups and other likepurposes, is already the subject of Letters Patent, therefore itis only the aforesaid application that is the subject ofthis invention.
linl the present inventiorrI place 'a cooler, E, (which is simply :t shallow pam) below-the finishing-pan C and the def'eeator B. Anaperture', e, in the side of the wooden wall, admits the exterior atmosphere tothe sirup Vinthe cooler, so as to reduce the temperature of it suiciently for the purpose of drawing off for barrelling or packing. The finished siru`p may be drawn from the finishing-pun C directly into the cooler, through the pipe e and the stop-cock e2, and lmay be, drawn ofi4 from the cooler at leisure through the pipe e"z and stop-coclz e, int-o the barrel or other package, ready for market. This nrrimgement of cooler affords a. convenience as to the mode and time of disposing of the finished Sirup.
Having described my invention, what I claim, is
1. The construction ofau evaporating-pan in such a. manner as to create a. continuous upward :ind downward iiow of the boiling sirup, as represented by the arrows a a', substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. I claim the iltering-pockets D, in combination with the boiling-pans or defecatorof an evcporating apparutus, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. I'clqim tbe .cooler E, in 'combination with the finishing-pan C, :is described :incl set forth.
4. I claim filtering the boiling sirup by continuously passing its surface fluid down through :t filtering suhstance in thel pocket D, to the bottom of the boiler, substantially in the manner und for the purpose set forth.
5. I claim the strainers D', in combination with the boiling-pans or defecator, und the pockets D, substantially as described and set forth.
