Specification of Letters Patent.

To a/Z whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. PoUK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Streator, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cues, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to billiard-cues; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous cue hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a billiard-cue embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in diametrical section, of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view illustrating the tip-base and the tip as the same appear when disconnected from the stick.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which- A is the billiard-cue stick, and a is a metallic ferrule interiorly threaded throughout its length, as indicated by B, and designed to be turned on a reduced and threaded portion of the stick.
C is a cue-tip of leather or other suitable material, preferably provided with the ordinary leather washer, as shown.
D is a tip-base, preferably of wood, and E is a screw connecting the tip-base and the tip. The tip-base comprises a head or enlargement, on the forward side of which the tip O is glued or otherwise held throughout its area, and a threaded shank cl of a diameter to snugly occupy the socket B, and preferably of such length that it abuts at its rear end against the forward end of the stick A. Through the tip-base extends a longitudinal central bore cZ, which has a countersink e at its rear end and is occupied by the screw E,
the head of which is disposed directly against the forward end of the stick. This screw extends through the tip-base and into the tip C, and hence. serves to strongly connect the tip to the tip-base in such manner that there is no liability of the tip being casually knocked oif of or otherwise displaced from the tip-base.
As will be readily appreciated from the foregoing, the tip O and its base D may be cheaply produced and connected together through the medium of the screw E, so as to constitute the article of manufacture shown in Fig. 3. and it will also be appreciated that the shank d of the tip-base may be quickly and easily screwed in the socket B at the forward end of the cue-stick, so as to effect a strong and true connection of the tip to the stick. It will further be appreciated that when the tip is worn the connected tip and tip-base may be readily removed from the stick and as quickly and easily replaced with a new connected tip and tip-base.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the arrangement of the head of the screw directly against the forward end of the stick enables the stick to prevent casual loosening of the screw, also that the ferrnle alone connects the tip-base to the stick.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A billiard-cue comprising a ferrule interiorly threaded throughout its length, a stick having a reduced and threaded forward end occupying the rear portion of the ferrule, a tip-base having an eXteriorly-threaded shank occupying the remainder or forward portion of theferrule with its rear end opposed to the forward end of the stick, and also having a head or enlargement bearing against the forward end of the ferrule, and a longitudinal central bore extending throughout its length and a countersink at the rear end of said bore, a tip on the forward side of the head or enlargement of the tip-base, and a connectingscrew extending through the tip-base and into the tip, and having a head at its rear end disposed in the countersink of the tip-base and directly against the forward end of the stick.
