Description
Patented Out. 1901.
(No Model.)
WITNESSES UNITED STATES ?ATENT OFFICE,
FREDRIOK GEORGE FISH, OF MILES PLATTING, MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
FERRULE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 683,559, dated October 1, 1901.
Application filed May 7, 1901. Serial No. 59,087. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that LFREDRICK GEORGE FisH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at {Miles Platting, Manchester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ferrules, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ferrules for walking-sticks,umbrella-sticks, and other devices; and the object thereof is to provide an improved ferrule or ferrule-tip which may be quickly and easily connected with the end of a walking-stick or the stick of an umbrella whenever necessary or desired and whereby a new ferrule may be substituted for the old one as occasion may require.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of an end of a walking-stick provided with my improved ferrule or ferrule-tip, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 5 the end of a walking-stick, or this part may represent the end of an umbrella or the end of a staff or similar article, and in the practice of my invention I secure thereto or thereon in any desired manner a tip 6, having a socket 7, adapted to receive the end of a stick, and this tip may be secured to the stick by screws, pins, or in any preferred manner.
The tip 6 is preferably slightly reduced in size at its outer end, as shown at 8, and is provided with a screw-threaded socket 9, adapted to receive a screw-threaded sleeve 10,in which is placed a ferrule-plug 11.
The inner bore of the sleeve 10 is larger at its inner end than at its outer end, and the ferrule-plug 11 is also larger at its inner end than at its outer end and is placed in the sleeve 10 before the latter is screwed into the socket 9, and'when the parts are thus connected the ferrule-plug 11 will remain firmly in place and be securely held in position.
The sleeve 10 is angular in cross-section or provided with facets 12, as shown in Fig. 1, and by means thereof a spanner or wrench may be connected therewith, so as to turn the said sleeve, and it will be apparent that a new ferrule-plug may be substituted for the old one whenever desired.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A ferrule-tip provided with a socket, a screw-threaded socket, a sleeve adapted to be screwed into said screw-threaded socket, the bore of said sleeve being larger at its inner than at its outer end and a ferrule-plug adapted to be inserted into the inner end of said sleeve and to project therefrom, said plug being larger at its inner than at its outer end, substantially as shown and described.
2. A ferrule-tip provided at each end with a socket, a sleeve adapted to be screwed in the outer socket and a ferrule-plug placed in said sleeve and projecting therefrom, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of April, 1901.
FREDRIOK GEORGE FISH.
