Description

No. 818,597. PATENTED APR. 24, 1906.
. J. W. WILSON.
BILLIARD CUE. APPLICATION FILED JAN.17, 1906.
I F922 I I I w I! flizealaemvwerflfor UNITED srArns JAMES W. WILSON, OF NEW YORK, N.- Y.
BlLLlARD-CUE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed January 1'7 1906. Serial No. 296,538.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BilliardCues, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to billiard-cues; and its object is to provide a one which is particularly simple in construction and highly efficient in use, having embodied therein means for the ready replacement of the cue-tip as the latter becomes worn or is found defective, as well as the ready replacement of the part of the cue adjacent the tip.
The invention includes the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is susceptible of some variations; but for the purpose of fully disclosing the same it is deemed necessary to illustrate and describe but a single embodiment thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fragment of a billiardcue embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.
The invention includes generally a cue comprising a main or butt section and a removable point-section, a tip associated with the point-section, and means for securing the point-section to the butt-section and for detachably securing the tip to the point-section so arranged that they are completely housed within the cue when the parts are assembled, so as to be hidden from view, and thus present a one having the same general appearance as the ordinary billiard-cue, but embodying the advantages of a readily-removable tip and readily-removable pointsection.
In the exemplification of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings the butt-section of the one is designated by a and is provided at its front end with an axial cavity a, into which a metallic lining-sleeve t is fitted, provided near its outer end with internal threads.
The point portion of the cue is designated by b, and it may be made of the same material as the butt portion or of ivory or like material commonly employed for such parts in the ordinary one made without a readilydetachable section. The portion 7) is provided with a recess near its rear end, into which is fitted a plug h, having a threaded portion projecting as a stem axially from the part b, and designed to interengage with the threads of the sleeve i. When the stem is screwed into the sleeve, the rear end surface of the part b, forming a shoulder about the stem, is forced into firm contact with the end of the part a, and the two sections then constitute, in effect, a single rigid part.
A composite tip is preferably mounted on the end of the cue, the same consisting of a base 0 and a part (Z of relatively softer material. As premised, the tip is removably held to the end of the one in contradistinc tion to the well-known custom of gluing. The means illustrated for this purpose comprises a bolt having its head f countersunk in the base 0 of the tip and its shank 6 extending axially through the part b and block h and its end threaded for the reception of a clamping-nut g. When the parts are assembled, the projecting end of the shank and the nut g, mounted thereon, are completely inclosed within the cavity a.
The construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description, and it will be appreciated that changes may be made from the illustrated embodiment of the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
I claim 1. A billiard-cue comprising a one-piece butt-section having a cavity therein at one end, a substantial solid point provided with an axial bolt-receiving opening, a tip detachable from the point, a member for coupling the point to the butt, a bolt carrying the tip having a shank designed to extend through the bolt-opening in the point, and a nut screwed upon the shank housed within said cavity, substantially as described.
2. A cue comprising a butt-section, having a cavity in the end thereof, a point-section, a sleeve fitting the cavity provided with threads, a block held at one end in the pointsection and having a part projecting from the latter for engagement with said sleeve, a tip, a bolt having its head embedded in the tip and its shank projecting through the point-section and block and a nut threaded on said stem, substantially as described.
engaged with the tip, its shank projecting i through the point-section With a threaded portion projecting to the outside of the stem and a nut mounted on the said threaded portion of the bolt, said nut and threaded portion being housed Within the cavity of the butt-section When the parts are assembled.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of tWo attesting Witnesses, this 17th day of January, 1906.
JAMES W. WILSON.
