- the forward end of the lever 86 is provided with a key 89, by means of which the lever can be actuated to effect a movement of the platen through the intermediate connections, platenframe, and key-lever, thereby shifting the platen from the lower to the upper ease position, the weight of the platen and its associated parts being suflicient to move the platen to the lowermost position.
- This movement of the platen in a direction transverse to its length enables it to be brought into position to receive an impact of either the inner or outer types on the type-bars.
- the rock-shaft 31 for the feed-dogs is provided with a sleeve 90, which is secured thereto by a pin 91, that extends through the sleeve and shaft.
- This slee-ve is provided with an abutment or stop 92, (see Figs. 13, 14, and 15,) which extends from one edge thereof and inv the direction of the length of the platen and cooperates with the stop-faces 93 and 94 from one end of the sleeve-like bearing portion 95 of the ribbon-vibrator.
- This sleeve 95 surrounds the shaft.
- a frame 98 has arms 99, that are riveted at 100 to the supportingarms 96, and extending inwardly from the arms 99 and toward each other are lingers 101, as represented in Fig. 12.

- the ribbon 109 extends fromv one ribbon-spool, over one of the guide-rollers 97 on the ribbon-vibrator, between the associated guide-linger 101 and the frame 98 of the vibrator, thence over one of the sloping walls 105, and between it and the associated guide-finger 106, where it makes a turn and passes over and turns on the opposite wall 105 and back under the other linger 101, thence over the associated roller 97, and back to the other ribbon-spool,so that throughout the entire extent, except where the ribbon makes a turn upon the bearing portion 102 of the ribbon-vibrator, the ribbon is maintained in substantially parallel lengths.
- a depression of a linger-key will force the associated type-bar to the printing-point, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thereby bringing the arm 16 of the associated key-lever into contact with the universal bar, thus moving it toward the front of the machine to the dotted-line position, and the eect of which is to turn the rock-shaft 31, thereby affording a movement of the feed-dogs toward the front of the machine.
- rlhe worm 46 cooperates with a worm-wheel 110, that carries apawl 111, pivoted thereto at 112, the pawl being normally maintained in engagement with a cooperating ratchet-wheel 113 by a spring 114, secured at 115 to the worm-wheel and bearing at its free end against the pawl.
- the ratchet-wheel113 has a sleeve 113, which is secured by a screw 116 (see Fig. 9) to a shaft 117, received in bearings in the frame 2 of the machine.
- One of these bearings is formed by an upwardly-extending bracket 118, whereas the opposite bearing is formed by a screw-collar 119, received and adjustable in a threaded opening in the frame 2.l
- the worm-wheel 110 is loosely mounted on the shaft 117 and is held against longitudinal displacement thereon by the ratchet-wheel113 on one side and a collar 120 on the other.
- This collar or liange projects from a sleeve 121, that surrounds the shaft, and is secured thereto by a screw 122, and interposed between the shaft and the sleeve are spring-arms 123, which terminate in bearings 124 for the pivots of rollers or detents 125.
- the shaft 117 has a groove extending throughout or substantially throughout the length thereof for the reception of a bar 126, that turns with the shaft, but is adapted to slide longitudinally in its groove independently of the shaft.
- the outer end of this bar terminates in a threaded portion 127 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 9, and a nut 128, having a lnurled head, is adapted to be received on the threaded end of the bar and affords hand-operated means by which the bar may be moved longitudinally when desired andliliewisc constitutes a collar which limits the movements of the bar in one direction by bearing against the sleeve 129, from which projects a crankarm 130, provided with a handle 131.
- crank-arm, sleeve, and handle are secured to the shaft 117 by a screw 13.2, so that the shaft, together with the parts carried thereby, may be rotated by hand when desired, it being understood that the handle and thumb-nut 128 project beyond one side of the machine where they are accessible tothe operator.
- the bar 126 hereinbefore referred to, is provided with lateral projections or cams 133, that coperate with the detents or rollers 125,' which tend to move the bar longitudinally in either direction when the crowns 134 of the cams pass the centers of the rollers in either one direction or the other, and the tension of the springs 123 tends to maintain the bar in the 'position to which it is shifted after a complete movement thereof in either direction has taken place by forcing the rollers against the sides of the cams, as indicated in Fig. 9.
- the bar 126 is apertured or slotted at 135 for the reception of a stem 136, that projects laterally from a double locking or engaging pawl or clutch member 137, each end of the pawl being provided with an engaging nose 138, as represented in Fig.11.
- r1 ⁇ he pawl137 is in the nature of a slide, which is received within a groove 139 in a sleeve 140, which surrounds the shaft 117 and has a transverse opening 141, through which the stem 136 of the pawl projects.
- the disposition of the parts is such that an independent movement of the bar 126 longitudinally of the shaft 117 may take place before such movement is transmitted to the pawl 137.
- the sleeve 14() is secured to the shaft by a headed screw 142, (see Fig. 9,) that is entered through an opening 143 in the core of one of the ribbon-spools and takes in threaded openings in the sleevel and shaft to unite the sleeve to the shaft.
- a headed screw 142 (see Fig. 9,) that is entered through an opening 143 in the core of one of the ribbon-spools and takes in threaded openings in the sleevel and shaft to unite the sleeve to the shaft.
- Surrounding the sleeve 14() are two ribbon-spools 144 and 145, which are adapted to turn thereon, the ribbon-spools being prevented from moving longitudinally on the shaft by cams 146 and 147 on opposite sides thereof, and which are secured to the shaft by screws 148, that extend through threaded openings in the sleeve and bear at their inner ends against the shaft.
- each ribbon-spool has secured near the core thereof a disk provided with a circular series of inwardly-extending ratchet-teeth 149, that project toward the teeth of the other spool, as indicated in Fig. 11, and which are adapted to cooperate IOO with the double pawl 137.
- reversing devices 150 and 151 Mounted on the shaft 117 and upon opposite sides of the ribbon-spools are so-called reversing devices 150 and 151, each of which consists of a sleeve surrounding the shaft and which has a cam opening or groove 152 therein, these cams extending in opposite directions, as represented in Figs. 9 and 11.
- These devices are loosely mounted on the shaft and each of them is provided with laterallyextending fingers or abutments 153, which are preferably diametrically opposite each other, as represented in Fig. 7.
- the cams 146 and 147 have the general elliptical shape, so that they each constitute a peripheral cam with diametrically opposite low portions 154, that permit the lingers 153 of the associated reversing device to project beyond the edge thereof, whereas the highest portions 155 of each cam are so related to the fingers 153 of the associated reversing device that when the longitudinal axis of the cam is brought into alinement with the fingers, as represented in Fig. 5, the outer ends of said fingers will be coincident with or lower than the peripheral face of the coperating cam.
- the bar 126 is provided with studs 156, which extend into the cam-grooves 152 in the reversing devices, as represented in Figs.
- the reversing device 150 is arrested, so that there is a relative rotary movement between the shaft 117, bar 126, with the pins 156 carried thereby, and said reversing device, then the bar 126 will be moved longitudinally in its groove toward the right. As heretofore explained, the longitudinal movement of the bar controls the pawl 137.
- Tn order to automatically arrest either of the reversing devices 150 and 151 when an end of the ribbon is approached, I have provided independently-operable automatically actuated devices, which will now be described.
- These devices consist of two set of arms, one for each ribbon-spool.
- an arm or bearing-piece 157 is rigidly secured to a sleeve 158, which turns freely upon a fixed shaft 158", that is mounted in bearings 159 on the frame 2 of the machine.
- This bearing-arm 157 is adapted to vibrate between the flanges or heads of its associated ribbon-spool and to bear upon the outer surfaces of the ribbon, as
- An associated stop-arm 160 is secured by a screw 161 to a weight 162, that is rigidly secured to the sleeve 158 and tends to maintain the bearing piece or arm 157 in contact with the surface of the ribbon.
- This stop-arm 1.60 projects to lone side of its associated ribbon-spool, as represented in Fig. 2, and is adapted to bear at its free end upon the cam 146 when the ribbon is sufficiently unwound from the associated ribbon-spool to permit it to do so, as represented in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.
- a like set of arms are employed for the ribbon-spoolk 145.
- an arm or bearing-piece 157 is adapted to project between the flanges of the ribbon-spool 145 and to bear upon an outer surface of the ribbon, and this arm is connectedto a sleeve 1581), which turns freely on the shaft 158u and is provided with a weighted portion 162, to which an arm or stop 160 is secured, the latter projecting to one side of its associated ribbon-spool and being adapted to bear at its free ends upon the associated cam 147 when the ribbon on the spool 145 is sufficiently unwound to permit it to do so.
- the fingers 153 which project from the reversing devices, extend at right angles to each otherthat is to say, the fingers of one reversing device extend at right angles to the fingers of the other reversing device-and this relative position of the fingers is maintained at all times irrespective of the fact that the devices are loosely mounted upon the rock-shaft and that the latter has a movement under certain conditions relative of said devices.
- the right-hand reversing device 151 has its fingers 153 extending beyond the periphery of the cam at the lowest portions thereof, and when the end of the ribbon on the spool 144 is approached or the ribbon is sufiiciently unwound the stop-arm 160 is permitted to extend into the path of one of the lingers 153 on the reversing device 151, as indicated in Fig. 3,
- the ribbon continues winding on the spool 144 during the operation of the machine until it is sufficiently unwound from the spool 145 to enable the stop-arm 160 to be brought into engagement with one of the fingers 153 of the reversing device 150, when said reversing device will be arrested by the stop-arm, which will effect a longitudinal movement of the bar 126 toward the right and areversal in the direction of the feed of the ribbon will be automatically brought about in the manner heretofore described.
- the fingers 153 of the other reversing device will extend in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the associated cam, as represented in Fig. 5, this right-angular disposition of the fingers 153 on the two reversing devices being likewise indicated vin Fig. 9.
- the effect of this operation is to automatically set the parts for the next reversing operation every time the parts are actuated to bring about a reversal in the direction of the feed of the ribbon. Should the operator desire at any time to effect a reversal in the direction of the feed, it is merely necessary to move the bar 126 in a longitudinal direction by pushing it in or pulling it out through the thumbnut or lznurled head 128.

Application led October 16, 1902. SerialiNo. 127,545.
To (1,17/ wlw/011e t muy concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER T. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ribbon mechanism for type-writing machines, and more particularly to mechanism for automatically reversing the direction of feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is approached; and the main object of the invention is to provide comparatively simple mechanism of the character specified which is reliable and efficient in operation.
To these and other ends, which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts, and combinations of devices to be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. A

Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse sectional view of the machine above the base and with parts omitted and parts broken away, the view being taken at the front of the machine. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side view, partly in section and with parts broken away, of va portion of the ribbonmechanism, the view illustrating the positions of the parts when engagement is effected to afford a reversal in the direction of the feed of the ribbon. Fig. 4 is a like view of the same, showing the different disposition of the parts, or that attained when reversal inthe direction of the feed of the ribbon is about to take place. Fig. 5 is a view corresponding to Fig. 4, except that it shows the disposition of the parts after a reversal in the direction of the feed has taken place. Fig. 6

Fig. 9 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the ribbon mechanism, the section being taken on the line 1/ `1/ of Fig. 11. Fig. l0 is an enlarged detail perspective view of a portion of the mechanism to be hereinafter described. Fig. 11 is a fragmentary plan view of a portion` of the ribbon mechanism with parts broken away and parts in section. Fig. 12 is a detail plan view of the ribbon guide or vibrator. Figs. 13, 14, and 15 are central vertical sectional views of the same, showing three different angles that the vibrator is adapted to assume.
In the various views parts have been omitted and parts broken away to better illustrate other features of the construction.
I have illustrated my invention applied to a front-strike type-writing machine, though it should be understood that the invention or any of the separate features thereof may be applied 4to other characters of writing-machines.
The frame of the machine is made up of a base 1 and a frame 2, which is supported on the base, and this frame or casting 2 supports the carriage 3 and various working parts of the machine. The frame 2 is provided with rails 4, that extend from side to side of the machine and are grooved on their inner faces for the reception of antifriction-balls 5, that are likewise received in companion grooves 6 in the cross-rails 7 of the carriage. 1n this manner the carriage is supported to travel from side to side of the machine. The base 1 has depending rods 8, which, together with the supporting-plate 9, constitute means for supporting a platform 10 to the base. This platform is provided with upwardly-extending lugs or studs 11, that are recessed at 12 for the reception of pivots 13, projecting laterally from key-levers 14, which have {ingerkeys 15 at their forward ends and are each provided with an upwardly-extending arm 16, that extends into the path of and is adapted to bear upon a pad 17 of ascgmental universal bar 18, provided with upwardly-extending Fig. 8 is a detail ISO a screw 27 to the type-bar segment 22, andV Y.
each type-bar is connected by a link 28 to the upwardly-extending arm 16 of the associated key-lever, each type-action being restored to its normal position bya spring 14n. The arms 19, which support the universal bar, are connected by rearwardly-extending links 29 to crank-arms 30, depending from a rock-shaft 3l,which extends from side to side of the machine, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and is supported by screw-bearings 32, that take in threaded openings inthe sides of the frame 2 and bear at their inner coned ends in openings in the rock-shaft 31. A coiled spring 33 surrounds the rock-shaft 31 and is connected at one end 34 to one of the crank-arms 30 and at its opposite end 35 to one of the cross-rails 4. Rigid feed-dogs 36 are formed in one piece with or are connected to asleeve 37, secured by a screw 37 a to the rock-shaft 31, and the dogs coperate with an escapement-wheel 38, that is rigidly secured to a shaft 39, supported at one end in an adjustable screw-bearing 40, received in the rear portion of the frame 2, and the opposite end of the shaft is reduced at 41 and is received in abearingin the forward portion of the frame 2. Surrounding the shaft 39 is a looselymounted sleeve 42, that is provided with teeth 43 on one end thereof, which constitutes one member of a two-part clutch. This sleeve is likewise provided with a pinion 44, which meshes with a gear-wheel 45. A suitable spring (not shown) is interposed between the sleeve 42 and the escapement-wheel 38 and tends to normally maintain the teeth 43 in engagement with the coperating teeth of the other clutch-section, which latter is formed as a part of a worm 46, secured to the shaft 39. The disposition of the parts is such that the sleeve 42 may be moved longitudinallyT upon the shaft 39 by any suitable means against the tension of its spring to effect a v disengagement of the clutch members without moving the pinion 44 out of mesh with its coperating gear 45 and in order that the escapement mechanism and ribbon mechanism may be entirely disconnected from the carriage and may be maintained at rest during the return movements of the carriage to the right, as will hereinafter more clearly appear.
The gear 45 meshes with a rack 46, that extends longitudinally of the carriage and is secured to the under side of one of the crossrails 7, and constant mesh is maintained between the gear and the rack 46. Connected to the gear 45 is a bevel-pinion 47, which meshes with a cooperating bevel-pinion 48, having its collar 49 secured to a shaft 50 by a set-screw 51. The shaft 50 is extended beyond the face of the bevel-gear 48, where it is received in suitable bearings carried by the frame 2, whereas the opposite end of said shaft is received within a screw-bearing 52, that takes in a threaded opening in the side wall of the frame 2. The shaft 50 likewise has a' pinion 53 secured thereto by a screw 54, and a segmental rack meshes with this pinion, the rack being pivoted at 56 to a forwardly-extending bracket-arm 57, secured to the frame 2 of the machine. rlhe segmental rack 55 has a handle 58, which extends forwardly of the pivot in order that the rack and the parts controlled thereby may be actuated by hand, as will hereinafter more clearly appear. The carrier for the segmental rack 55 is provided with a plain-faced segmental portion 59, against which a strap 60 is adapted to bear, one end of the strap being secured to the carrier of the segmental rack at 61, whereas the opposite end of said strap or band is connected at 62 to a contractile spring 63, that has its opposite end connected at 64 to a strap or band 65. The forward end of the strap 65 is secured by a screw 66 to a block 67, that is tapped to receive a threaded rod 68, the rear end of which is received within a bearing 69, formed in the base of the machine, whereas the forward head of said rod extends through the front of the base and is seated in a depression therein and is provided with a notch to afford a turning ofl the rod or spindle by a screw-driver to effect an adjustment of the tension of the spring 63.
From the foregoing description it will be understoodl that the tension of the spring 63 is exerted upon the segmental rack 55 and through the pinions 53, 48, and 47 and through the gear 45 to the rack 46 to effect a movement of the carriage from right to left or Ain the direction of its feed whenA the feed-dogs 36 are Vibrated to afford amovement of the escapement-wheel. The disposition of the parts is such that the handle 58 will be in the uppermost position when the carriage has completed its travel toward the left. A depression of the handle will therefore move the carriage through lthe segmental rack 55 and the intermediate connections back to the initial position or to the extreme right. It will be understood, therefore, that the spring 63 constitutes a carriage-spring and that the tension of the spring is increased when the handle 58 is depressed to move the carriage to the right.
The platen is supported in a platen-frame 71 upon links 7 2, which are pivoted to the end plates of the carriage at 73. The platen-frame IOO ITS
IZO
is pivoted at 75 to crank-arms 74, that extend v forwardly and upwardly from a rock-shaft 76, which is supported in bearings 77, that extend rearwardly from the forward cross bar or rail 7 of the carriage. The rock-shaft 7 6 likewise has. a centrally-located depending arm 78, which is provided at its lower end with an antifriction-roller 79, bearing upon a plate 80, that extends from side to side of the machine and is connected to or formed integral with the rock-shaft 81, that is supported in bearings in the ends of the frame 2. This so-called rock-shaft 81 likewise has a forwardly projecting crank arm 82 secured thereto and at the forward ends of which is pivoted at 83 a downwardly-extending link 84, pivoted at its lower end 85 to a lever 86, the lever being pivoted at 87 to a post 88, that extends upwardly from the platform 10. The forward end of the lever 86 is provided with a key 89, by means of which the lever can be actuated to effect a movement of the platen through the intermediate connections, platenframe, and key-lever, thereby shifting the platen from the lower to the upper ease position, the weight of the platen and its associated parts being suflicient to move the platen to the lowermost position. This movement of the platen in a direction transverse to its length enables it to be brought into position to receive an impact of either the inner or outer types on the type-bars.
The rock-shaft 31 for the feed-dogs is provided with a sleeve 90, which is secured thereto by a pin 91, that extends through the sleeve and shaft. This slee-ve is provided with an abutment or stop 92, (see Figs. 13, 14, and 15,) which extends from one edge thereof and inv the direction of the length of the platen and cooperates with the stop- faces 93 and 94 from one end of the sleeve-like bearing portion 95 of the ribbon-vibrator. This sleeve 95 surrounds the shaft. 31 and is provided with forwardly-extending arms 96, that carry antifriction rollers or pulleys 97 between the ends thereof and on a pivot 97, that extends from one arm to the other. A frame 98 has arms 99, that are riveted at 100 to the supportingarms 96, and extending inwardly from the arms 99 and toward each other are lingers 101, as represented in Fig. 12. The upper bearing or terminal portion 102 of the ribbon vibrator or guide is secured to the frame 98 at 103 and is bent at an angle thereto, as represented in Fig. 1. This ribbon-guiding portion 102 is provided with a central divisionpiece 104, that is formed into a downwardlyextending hook and from which oppositelysloping guide-walls 105 extend. These sloping walls are paralleled by guide-lingers 106, each of which extends throughout a portion of the length of its associated guide wall or ec ge.
The shaft 31 has a collar or flange 107 secured thereto, and one end of a coiled spring 108, which surrounds the shaft, is secured to this collar, 'whereas the opposite end4 of said spring is secured to the carrier or sleeve 95 of the vibrator and tends to normally maintainV the vibrator in the position shown in Fig. 13- that is to say, the tension ofthe spring 108 is exerted to maintain the abutment 94 on the sleeve 95 in contact with the abutment 92, Fig. 13, on the collar 90, which is secured to the rock-shaft, and this relative disposition of the ribbon-vibrator and rock-shaft 31 is maintained under normal conditions. The ribbon 109 extends fromv one ribbon-spool, over one of the guide-rollers 97 on the ribbon-vibrator, between the associated guide-linger 101 and the frame 98 of the vibrator, thence over one of the sloping walls 105, and between it and the associated guide-finger 106, where it makes a turn and passes over and turns on the opposite wall 105 and back under the other linger 101, thence over the associated roller 97, and back to the other ribbon-spool,so that throughout the entire extent, except where the ribbon makes a turn upon the bearing portion 102 of the ribbon-vibrator, the ribbon is maintained in substantially parallel lengths. The ribbon in passing from one sloping wall 105 to the other passes under the hooked portion of the division-piece 104, which prevent-s the ribbon from being accidentally displaced from the outer end of the ribbon-vibrator. A depression of a linger-key will force the associated type-bar to the printing-point, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. This same movement of the rock-shaft 31 is effective to move the ribbonvibrator from the position shown in full to that indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the ribbon will be brought into the path of the type before it reaches the printing-point. When the finger-key is released, the parts will be restored to the normal position. (Represented in full lines in Fig. 1 and indicated in Fig. 14.) Should the operator desire to move the ribbon-vibrator to a further extent from the platen, in order that erasures or corrections may be made with greater facility and without removing the paper from the machine or turning the platen, it is merely necessary to depress the ribbon-vibrator, and it may be moved around the shaft 31 from the normal position (indicated in Fig'. 14) to that indicated in Fig. 15. At this time the rock-shaft 31 is maintained at rest and the ribbon-vibrator is merely moved against the tension of the spring 108, and the relative movement of the ribbonvibrator tothe rock-shaft 3l is arrested by the abutment 93 on the vibrator carrier or sleevev coming into Contact with the abutment 92, secured to the rock-shaft, and which at this time is maintained fixed relative to the vibrator. When the vibrator is released, the tension of IOO the spring 108 will force it back to the normal position, where it is arrested by theabutment 94 coming into contact with the relatively`fixed abutment 92 on the rock-shaft. The next depression of the linger-key will cause the vibrator to move from the full to the dotted line position in the usual manner, the parts being maintained in a fixed relation by the spring 108.
I will next describe the ribbon-feed mechanism and the means by which the direction of the feed of the ribbon is automatically reversed.
Mounted on the shaft 117 and upon opposite sides of the ribbon-spools are so-called reversing devices 150 and 151, each of which consists of a sleeve surrounding the shaft and which has a cam opening or groove 152 therein, these cams extending in opposite directions, as represented in Figs. 9 and 11. These devices are loosely mounted on the shaft and each of them is provided with laterallyextending fingers or abutments 153, which are preferably diametrically opposite each other, as represented in Fig. 7. The cams 146 and 147, hereinbefore described, have the general elliptical shape, so that they each constitute a peripheral cam with diametrically opposite low portions 154, that permit the lingers 153 of the associated reversing device to project beyond the edge thereof, whereas the highest portions 155 of each cam are so related to the fingers 153 of the associated reversing device that when the longitudinal axis of the cam is brought into alinement with the fingers, as represented in Fig. 5, the outer ends of said fingers will be coincident with or lower than the peripheral face of the coperating cam. The bar 126 is provided with studs 156, which extend into the cam-grooves 152 in the reversing devices, as represented in Figs. 9 and 11, and a relative turning movement of the shaft and pins 156 of either of the reversing devices will cause a longitudinal movement of the barv126 by the cooperation of the cams with the associated pins 156 extending from the bar, the direction of movement depending upon which pin 156 and its associated cam receives a relative movement. Thus if the reversing device 151 is arrested while the shaft 117, with the bar 126 and its pins 156, continues to rotate the cam of the device 151 will cause the bar 126 to be moved toward the left, f
and after the detent-rollers 125 pass over the crowns of the cams 133 they tend to assure the complete movement of the bar 126 to the left. On the other hand, if the reversing device 150 is arrested, so that there is a relative rotary movement between the shaft 117, bar 126, with the pins 156 carried thereby, and said reversing device, then the bar 126 will be moved longitudinally in its groove toward the right. As heretofore explained, the longitudinal movement of the bar controls the pawl 137. Thus after a limited independent movement of the bar in either direction an end wall of the slot 135 in the bar will contact with the finger 136 of the pawl and move it out of engagement with the teeth 149 of one ribbon-spool and into engagement with the teeth of the other ribbon-spool. The engaged ribbon-spool will be positively locked tothe shaft and rotated therewith, whereas the released ribbon-spool will rotate freely on its bearing and be turned by the pull of the ribbon thereon in an opposite direction from that of the positively-driven spool, thus winding the ribbon on one spool and unwinding from the other.
Tn order to automatically arrest either of the reversing devices 150 and 151 when an end of the ribbon is approached, I have provided independently-operable automatically actuated devices, which will now be described. These devices consist of two set of arms, one for each ribbon-spool. Thus an arm or bearing-piece 157 is rigidly secured to a sleeve 158, which turns freely upon a fixed shaft 158", that is mounted in bearings 159 on the frame 2 of the machine. This bearing-arm 157 is adapted to vibrate between the flanges or heads of its associated ribbon-spool and to bear upon the outer surfaces of the ribbon, as
represented in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. An associated stop-arm 160 is secured by a screw 161 to a weight 162, that is rigidly secured to the sleeve 158 and tends to maintain the bearing piece or arm 157 in contact with the surface of the ribbon. This stop-arm 1.60 projects to lone side of its associated ribbon-spool, as represented in Fig. 2, and is adapted to bear at its free end upon the cam 146 when the ribbon is sufficiently unwound from the associated ribbon-spool to permit it to do so, as represented in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. A like set of arms are employed for the ribbon-spoolk 145. Thus an arm or bearing-piece 157 is adapted to project between the flanges of the ribbon-spool 145 and to bear upon an outer surface of the ribbon, and this arm is connectedto a sleeve 1581), which turns freely on the shaft 158u and is provided with a weighted portion 162, to which an arm or stop 160 is secured, the latter projecting to one side of its associated ribbon-spool and being adapted to bear at its free ends upon the associated cam 147 when the ribbon on the spool 145 is sufficiently unwound to permit it to do so.
It should be understood that the fingers 153, which project from the reversing devices, extend at right angles to each otherthat is to say, the fingers of one reversing device extend at right angles to the fingers of the other reversing device-and this relative position of the fingers is maintained at all times irrespective of the fact that the devices are loosely mounted upon the rock-shaft and that the latter has a movement under certain conditions relative of said devices.
From an examination of Figs. 2, 3, and 4 it will be understood that the disposition of the parts is such that the ribbon is being unwound from the vspool 144, whereas the spool 145 is rigidly connected to the shaft to rotate therewith in the direction of the arrow indicated at the spool 145 in Fig. 3, so that the ribbon is wound upon the spool 145. At this time the right-hand reversing device 151 has its fingers 153 extending beyond the periphery of the cam at the lowest portions thereof, and when the end of the ribbon on the spool 144 is approached or the ribbon is sufiiciently unwound the stop-arm 160 is permitted to extend into the path of one of the lingers 153 on the reversing device 151, as indicated in Fig. 3,
thus arresting the movement thereof with the shaft 117. The continued rotation of the shaft for a quarter-turn turns the associated cam 146, which is secured to the shaft, from the position indicated in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4. The cam during this movement, bearing, as it does, on the free end of the stop-arm 160, raises it and brings one of the highest portions155 of the cam opposite the engaged finger, so as to disconnect the stop-arm 160 from the finger 153 on the reversing device, as indicated in Fig. 4, which shows the positions of the parts just before the stop-arm is IOO IIO
disengaged from the finger. The effect of this operation is to afford a quarter-turn of the shaft with reference to the reversing device 151, which relative movement of the parts is eectiveto move the bar 126 toward the left, thereby disengaging the pawl 137 from the spool 145 and at the same time forcing the pawl into engagement with the teeth on the spool 144. This releases the spool 145 and locks the spool 144 to the shaft, so that the ribbon-spools turn in the opposite directions from those in which they turned before the shifting of the bar 126. Fig. 5 represents the disposition of the parts after the reversing operation has taken place, and it will be observed that at this time the fingers 153 on the reversing device 151 extend in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the cam, and the free edge of the stop-arm 160, bearing on the periphery of the cam, will be prevented from engaging the fingers. The ribbon continues winding on the spool 144 during the operation of the machine until it is sufficiently unwound from the spool 145 to enable the stop-arm 160 to be brought into engagement with one of the fingers 153 of the reversing device 150, when said reversing device will be arrested by the stop-arm, which will effect a longitudinal movement of the bar 126 toward the right and areversal in the direction of the feed of the ribbon will be automatically brought about in the manner heretofore described. It will be understood that when either reversing device is arrested by its associated stop-arm it will cause a longitudinal movement of the bar 126 and that this movement of the bar in either direction will cause the reversing device, which is maintained with its fingers 153 in the direction of the longitudinal axis of its associated cam, to be moved a quarter-turn by reason of the engagement between the cam-slot and pin 152 and 156, so that the lingers will extend at right angles to the length of the associated cam, where they are in a position to be engaged by the associated arresting or stop arm 160 or 160 during further revolution of the shaft. It further follows that when the iingers 153 of one controlling or reversing device are at right angles to the length of the associated cam, as indicated in Fig. 3, the fingers 153 of the other reversing device will extend in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the associated cam, as represented in Fig. 5, this right-angular disposition of the fingers 153 on the two reversing devices being likewise indicated vin Fig. 9. The effect of this operation is to automatically set the parts for the next reversing operation every time the parts are actuated to bring about a reversal in the direction of the feed of the ribbon. Should the operator desire at any time to effect a reversal in the direction of the feed, it is merely necessary to move the bar 126 in a longitudinal direction by pushing it in or pulling it out through the thumbnut or lznurled head 128. It will likewise be seen that the operator may at any time wind the ribbon from one spool to another by turning the shaft 117 through the handle 131, the spool on which the ribbon is wound being determined by the disposition of the rod 126, which may be moved in the manner described.
In the operation of the machine an actuation of the finger-keys will afford a movement of the carriage in the manner hereinbefore described through the spring 63 and the intermediate connections between said spring and the carriage. The effect of the movement of these parts is to turn the worm 46, thereby transmitting an intermittent rotary motion to the shaft 117. The intermittent rotation of the shaft 1'17 will cause the ribbon-spool connected thereto bythe pawl 137 to be positively rotated in one direction, thus winding the ribbon thereon, whereas the other spool is turned in an opposite direction by the pull of the ribbon thereon, so that the power applied to move the carriage is effective to move the ribbon mechanism. As the ribbon is gradually unwound from one spool to another the bearing device of the spool from which the ribbonis unwound will eventually permit the associated stop-arm to be projected into the path of the fingers 153 on the associated reversing device. A further quarterturn of the shaft will bring about the relative movement between the engaged reversing device and the shaft in the manner hereinbefore described. This relative movement between these parts is effective to move the bar 126 longitudinally of the shaft, thus throwing the pawl 137 out of engagement with the ribbon-spool, which is locked to rotate with the shaft, and throwing said pawl into engagement with the ribbon-spool from which the ribbon was being unwound.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and certain features thereof may be employed without the others.
Certain of the parts shown in the accompanying drawings are not claimed herewith, but are claimed in separate applications filed by me herewith or in an application filed by me on the 21st day of April, 1902, and bearing Serial No. 103,898.
