and I do hereby declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in type-writing machines and more particularly to rewinding mechanism for stencgraphic writing machines,-one object of the invention being to so construct the mechanism that the increasing size of the roll of paper being rewound shall be compensated for in such manner that the feeding of the paper for line spacing shall be maintained uniform. w
A further object is to so construct rewinding mechanism that the paper will not be wound faster, under normal conditions,than it leaves the writing mechanism.
A further object is to so construct rewinding mechanism that it shall be operative from the mechanism of the typewriting machine and be capable of adjustment without removing any part, whibh will permit unreeling for inspection of writing on the reeled paper.

With these objects to provide rewinding be noiseless in its in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth-and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a stenographic writing machine embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section and partly broken away; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view illustrating positions which parts of the rewinding mechanism may assume under different conditions, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the clutch.
1 represents the frame of the machine, wherein is pivotally mounted a plurality of key levers 2 provided respectively with keys or buttons 3 and with upwardly projecting arms 4:. supported between their ends and each provided at its upper end with a type 7,the lower ends of said type levers being pivotally connected with the upper ends of the key lever arms 4. Brackets 8 are located on the frame 1 at respective sides thereof and to the forwardends of these brackets, links 9 are hinged and supported by the frame-work. The forward ends of these links support a transverse platen bar 10, preferably provided with a yielding strip or platen 11.
A shaft 12 (mounted in the brackets 8) extends .fromone of said brackets 8 to the other and upon this shaft disks, such as indicated at 13, Fig. 1, are mounted. Levers 14 are mounted between their ends on the shaft 12 in proximity to the brackets 8 and the upper ends of these levers carry spring pressed feed fingers 15 which certain of the wheels or disks 13 to feed the paper as presently explained. A yoke 16 is fixed at its ends to the brackets 8 of the frame-work and the intermediate portion of this yoke is provided with an arm 17 with nected and adapted to cooperate with an intermediate wheel or disk 13 for preventing retrograde movement of the paper. yoke 16 is also provided with a serrated or toothed edge 19 to facilitate the ready severance of the paper strip. 4
Standards 20 rise from the platen bar 10 and between these standards, guide rolls 2122 are mounted. A guide 23 is disthe form of an integral flange depending from the lower edge of the platen bar 10. A door 24 is provided for the rear end of the frame or casing of the machine and this door carries a bracket 25 in which a roll of paper 26 is "mounted. The paper strip 26 extends from this roll under the guide 23; then upwardly in front of the platen to and over the upper guide roll 21. After passing over the roll 21, the paper strip is made to pass downwardly and around the roll 22 and from the latter the strip passes rearwardly under. a bar 27 supported by. pivotal arms 28, then over the wheels or disks 13, and under the fingers 15 and 18. A guide plate 29 is-provided for assisting in the threading of the paper past the roll 22.

Suitable inking mechanism is provided but as this constitutes no part of the invention described and claimed herein, a detalled description of the same will be superfluous, but sufiice it to say that the inking ribbon is caused to pass between the type and the paper strip.
It will be observed that the paper strip is bowed or loose between the guides 23 and 21 and that when a key lever is operated, the type will be caused to imprint on this loose or bowed section of the paper strip. It will also be observed-that when a key lever is operated, the engagement of its arm 30' 4 with the universal bar 30 will cause the motion to be transmitted through the arms or bars 33 and links 34 to the levers 14. Said levers will thus be caused to rock and to move the fingers 15 and, said fingers being in engagement with the paper strip passing over' the wheels or disks 13, will cause said paper strip to be moved forwardly a distance sufficient to receive anotherline of writing. When the paper strip is thus moved, retrograde movement thereof will be prevented by the finger 18 in 00- operation with one of the wheels or disks 13.
' When the key lever shall have been released it will be returned to its normal position by uitable spring action. After the paper strip leaves the feeding mechanism, and passes under the bar or yoke 16, it will be reeled or rewound by means which will now be explained.

A removable hub or core piece 52 is disposed between the disks and is made hollow or with socketed ends to receive the heads of the screws 44-50 and is also notched, as at 53, to receive the pin 51 on disk 49, so as to cause said hub or core and disk 49 to rotate together. The reel disk 49 is provided on its outer face with an annular flange 54 which is concentric with the axis of said disk and re ceives, loosely, a disk'55 carried by a lever 56 mounted loosely on the spindle 47. The disk 55 is provided in its periphery with recesses 5757 and 58,the bottoms of the recesses 57-57 being concentric with the axis of the disk and these recesses receive balls 59 which engage the inner face of the annular flange 54 and constitute bearings for the disk. The bottom of the notch 58 is made eccentric to the axis of the disk and receives a clutch roller 60 which, when the disk is turned in one direction, will become wedged between the disk and the annular flange and thus constitute a clutch between v the lever 56 and the rewinding reel for turning the latter. It is apparent that when the lever 56 is moved in the other direction, the clutch roller will'enter the deeper end of the notch 58 and permit said lever and the disk 55 to move without imparting -motion to the reel.
The clutch devices above described are oscillated by the operation of the mechanism of the 'typewriting machine, referably by the paper-feed devices, and t e connections between the latter and the clutch lever are'such that the strokes of said clutch diminished in length as paper accumulates onthe rewinding reel and the diameter of the roll of rewound paper increases, so that in the normal operation of the machine, the paper will notbe wound faster than it is fed by the paper-feed mechanism of the machine. To accomplish these results the clutch lever 56 is connected with one of the levers 14 of anism, by means of a compensating pitman This pitman comprises two members the paper-feed mech- 6263 pivotally connected together at 64,the
member 62 over-lapping the member 63 and being provided with a hook 65 to engage the member 63 and limit movement of said pit-' man members in one direction. The shorter pitinan member 63 is provided with a depending arm '66, from the lower end of which, an arm 67 projects horizontally over the strip of paper and its free end is provided with a curved foot 68 to engage said papver strip.
hen the rewinding of the paper strip on the reel begins and until the diameter of the rewound roll increases to an extent sufficient to cause a movement of the periphery of the roll which will be greater than the length of paper fed from the machine, the two members of the pitman willremain in alinement,-but when the size of the roll of rewound paper increases as above described, the increased degree of inclination of the paper strip between the yoke 16 on the machine and the paper reel and'when this portion of the paper becomes taut as the reel attempts. to wind the paper, will cause an upward movement of the paper strip to be transmitted, through the arm 67 to the pitman 61 and break the joint between the members thereof thus momentarily shortening the stroke imparted to the reel and preventing the same from turning farther than is necessary to wind a section of paper strip equal to the movement of the strip by the feed mechanism for line spacing,the said pitman thus operating automatically to compensate for the increasing size of the rewound paper roll.
It may sometimes become desirable to inspect the writing upon the paper strip after it has been rewound and in order to permit this, retrograde rotation of the reel will be necessary. Such retrograde rotation of the reel and the consequent unreeling of the'paper strip will be permitted by reversing the clutch devices and this may be readily accomplished by turning over the clutch disk so that the clutch roller will remain in the deeper portion of the notch 58. When the clutch shall have been thus reversed, the clutch lever 56 will assume the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and said lever will be permitted to be moved from the full line position to the dotted line position without removing any art from the machine, by reason of the capability of the pitman 61 to buckle and to assume the dotted line position of said pitman shown in Fig. 3.
The construction of the clutch device and type-writing machine as above described, not only permits the ready reversing or throwing out of action of said clutch to enable the operator to unreel the paper strip, but it also provides operating mechanism for rewinding the paper strip, which is accurate and noiseless.
Various slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention the without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Havino fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with a typewriting mechanism and a paper rewinding reel, of a clutch associated with said reel, andjointed connections connected with said typewriting mechanism and said clutch for automatically operating the rewinding reel when the typewriting machine is operated, said jointed connections embodying means permitting the release of the clutch to free the rewinding reel and permit retrograde rotation thereof.
2. The combination with a type-writing mechanism and a paper rewinding reel, of a clutch associated with said reel, and jointed I do not wish 1 ing mechanism and said clutch for automatically operating the rewinding reel when-the type-writing machine is operated, said jointed connections embodying means permittmg the release of the clutch to free the rewinding reel and permit retrograde rotation thereof. 4
3. The combination with paper feed devices of a typewriting mechanism and a paper rewinding reel, of a clutch associated with said reel, and operating means for said clutch to rotate the rewinding reel, said operating means comprising pivotally connected members cooperativewith the paper strip and pivotally connected respectively with the clutch operating means and the paper feed devices.
i. The combination with a type-writing mechanism and a rewinding reel, of a clutch associated with said reel, and a compensating pitman disposed over the path of the paper strip and having a part cooperative with the paper strip, connecting said clutch with the type-writing mechanism.
5. The combination with a type-writing mechanism and a paper rewinding reel, of a clutch associated with said reel, and a p1tman connecting said clutch with the typewriting mechanism, said pitman comprising two members pivotally connected together and provided with a paper engaging part whereby the joint between the pitman members may be broken automatically.
6. The combination with a type-writing mechanism and a paper rewinding reel, of a clutch associated with said reel, a jointed pitman connecting said clutch with the typewriting mechanism and provided with means for limiting relative movement of the parts of said pitman in one direction, and an arm projecting from one part of said iointed said compensating pitman pitman and disposed in position to be engaged by a paper strip passing from the typewriting mechanism to the rewinding reel.-
7. The combination with a stenographic writing machine provided with paper feeding mechanism for line spacing, and a re Winding reel, of a clutch associated with said rewinding reel, and provided .with a lever, a pitman connecting said lever with the paper-feed mechanism, said pit-man comprising two members pivotally connected together and a portion of one member over-lapping a portion of the other member, one of said pitman members provided with'a stop engaging the other pitman member to limit the relative movement of said members in one direction, and an arm carried by one of said pitman members and having a part disposed over the path of the paper strip as the latter passes from the feed devices to the rewinding reel.
