TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,188, dated January 3, 1905. Application filed September 26,1903. Serial No. 174,744.
' citizen of the'United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to type-writing machines, and more particularly to ribbon-feed mechanism therefor.
One object of my present invention is to provide means for affording the use of a ribbon having two or more fields of different characteristics or colors and for limiting the feed of the ribbon to the field in use when desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide means of the character described which will at the same time afford an automatic re.
versal in the direction of the feed of the ribbon.
Astill further object 'of my invention is to provide means of the character specified which may be thrown into or out of operation at will.
To the above and other ends, which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts, and combinations of devices to be hereinafter described, and more particularly point ed out in the appended claims.

with corner-posts 2 and a top plate 3, having upwardly extending supports 4 and 5, to which traverse-rods 6 and 7, respectively, are secured. A carriage 8 has traction-rollers 9, which cooperate with the traverse-rod 7 and an arm 10 extends rearwardly from the carriage and cooperates with a guide-sleeve 11, that runs freely upon the rear traverse-rod 6. The platen-frame 12 is pivotally connected to the carriage or truck 8 and supports a platen 13. with a roller 14L, which is supported upon a shift-rod 15. in the base at 17 and are provided with the usual finger-keys 18. Connecting-links 19 are connected to the keylevers at their lower ends and are connected at their upper ends 20 to type-bars 21. Extending beneath the series of key-levers is a universal bar 22, provided with upwardly-extending links 23, that have hooked ends 2 1 hung upon a traverse-bar 25, which extends from a forwardlyprojecting arm 26 of the rock-shaft 27. Projecting upwardly from the rock-shaft is'an arm 28, that carries the usual feed-dogs 29, which cooperate with an escapement-wheel 30. This escapement-wheel is operatively connected to a shaft which turns in a bearing 31, and the forward end of the shaft carries a pinion 32, that meshes with a feed rack 33. A spring-drum 3 1 has one end of a band 35 connected thereto, the opposite end of said band being connected to the carriage at 36 in order to afford a feed movement of the carriage when the feed-dogs are actuated.

Key-levers 16 are fulcrumed.
Depending lugs 37 project from the top plate of the machine, at each side thereof, and are provided with bearings for the reception of ribbon-spool shafts 38. Each of the shafts 38 has two collars 39 and 40, which cooperate with the depending lugs 01' supports 37 to prevent a longitudinal movement of the shaft. The rear end of each shaft 38 projects through one of the bearing-lugs 37 and has a beveled pinion 41 secured thereto, each bevel-gear being adapted to mesh with a cooperating bevel-pinion 42 or 43. The bevel-pinions 42 and 43 are fixed to a shaft 44, which is loosely supported in bearings in depending lugs 45 and 46, the lug 46 being bifurcated to receive a bevel-pinion 47, which has a splined or pinand-slot connection 48 with the shaft 44, so as to afford a free longitudinal movement of the shaft in its bearings independently of the bevel-pinion 47. This bevel-pinion 47 being seated Within the bifurcated portion of thelug 46 is constantly maintained in mesh with a gear 49, which is formed on the hub of a ratchet wheel 50. The hub and ratchetwheel 50 are loosely supported on a spindle 51, which constitutes the bearing for the spring-d rum 34. The spring-drum has a pawl 52, which is pivoted thereto and adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 50, so as to cause the ratchet-wheel and bevel-gear to rotate when the carriage moves in the direction of its feed and to enable the ratchetwheel and bevel-gear 49 to remain at rest during the travel of the carriage from left to right or in a direction opposite its feed.
The longitudinally-movable shaft 44 has a collar 53 secured thereto and which is adapted to abut against the depending lug 45 to limit the longitudinal movement of the shaft in one direction. One end of the shaft 44 is provided with a hand-operated crank 54, by which it may be turned or moved longitudinally at will. A circumferential groove 55 is contained in the shaft, near the crank thereon, and the end 56 of a latch-lever 57 is adapted to project into said groove. The latch-lever is pivoted to the framing of the machine at 58 and carries a laterally-extending antifriction roller or stud 59. A spring-pressed detent 60 has two depressions 61 therein for cooperation with the antifriction-roller 59 on the latch-lever. A coiled expansion -spring 62 is contained within a recess in a portion of the frame of the machine, in which said detent is adapted to move longitudinally, and this springsurrounds the stem of the detent and bears at one end against the end wall of the recess and at its other end against a shoulder 63, formed on the detent, thus tending to move the detent toward the shaft. A longitudinal movement of the shaft 44 tends to press the detent against the tension of its spring until the apex of the elevation between the two recesses is passed by the antifrictionroller, when the pressure on the spring 62 tends to force the detent toward the shaft, thereby assuring a completion of the movement of the shaft 44 in a longitudinal direction and seating the roller in the proper recess in the detent.
Each ribbon-spool shaft supports a ribbonspool 64, one head of which is apertured at 65, and the core thereof is recessed at 66. Projecting through the aperture 65 in the head of each ribbon-spool is a reversing device 67,v
reversing device 67. The layers of ribbon wound upon the spools maintain the reversing devices 67 within the openings 66 in the spools and likewise maintain the rear ends of the pin 71 within their hearings in the ribbon-spool shafts. The shaft 44 has two worms 74 and 75 thereon, and the position of these worms is such that one of them is in a position to cooperate with its pin 71 when the other is out of such position. When an end of the ribbon is reached, the weighted arm of the reversing device on the empty spool will when it is brought to the lowermost position drop, as indicated in Fig. 11, thereby forcing its pin 71 to the projected position, where it will cooperate with the associated Worm 74 or 75 on the shaft 44. A further rotation of the shaft will cause a longitudinal movement thereof to be effected, thereby carrying the bevel-pinion 42 or 43 into engagement with its cooperating bevel-gear 41 on the shaft carrying the empty spool, so that a further rotation of the shaft 44 will cause the ribbon to be wound on the empty spool, thus reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon.
The mechanism thus far described constitutes parts of the N o. 6 Remington type-writing machine, and further description thereof is deemed unnecessary, and while my invention is applicable to the N o. 6 Remington machine Without changing the structural features of said machine or in any way altering the operation thereof it should be understood that the various features of my invention may be employed in various characters of type-writing machines.
The shaft 44 is providedwith a worm-gear 76, formed with a hub 77, which has a circumferential groove 78 therein. This combined worm and hub is adapted to be secured to the shaft by a screw 79, that is received within a threaded opening in the hub and bears at its inner end against the shaft. A bracket-plate 80 is secured to the base of the machine and is provided with ears 81, which constitute bearings for a pivot-rod 82, that extends through said bearings and through apertured arms 83 on a frame 84. This frame is likewise provided with bearings for a rock-shaft 86, which has a segment or so-called actuator 87 secured thereto and the edge of which has gear-teeth 88, that are adapted to mesh with the worm 76. A spring 89 is secured at one end to the rock-shaft and bears at its opposite end 90 against the frame 84, so as to move the segment in one direction relatively to the frame 84. Secured to the rock-shaft 86 is an arm or carrier 91, that has an enlarged portion 92, with aseries of threaded openings 93 therein, and a screw-stop 94 is adapted to pass through any of these openings, asindicated in Fig. 6, and to cooperate with a side of the bearing-arm 85 on the frame 84 to limit the movement of the rock-shaft and segment when turned by its spring 89. Pivoted at 95 to the upper end of the arm 91 is a so-called locking member or element 96, which is connected by a knuckle-joint to the arm, so that it is free to move from the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 3 to the full-line position shown in said figure independently of the arm, but
cannot move beyond the full-line position. A spring 97 is connected at one end to the looking member and at its opposite end to the arm 91, so as to maintain the locking member in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 relatively to the arm 91. A leaf-spring 98 is secured at one end, 99, to the bracket 80 and bears at its opposite end against the frame 84, thus tending to depress the frame. Extending upwardly from the bracket-plate 80 isa bracket-arm 100, to which an actuating or controlling lever 101 is pivoted at 102. The lower end of this controlling-lever carries an offset antifrictionroller 103, which passes beneath a cam-lug 104, that projects from the frame 84. This roller 103 is likewise adapted to bear against a supporting-surface 105, that projects from the bracket-plate 80. The upper end of the controlling-lever 101 has an arm 1'06 pivoted thereto at 107, and the upper end of the arm 106 is adapted to be seated within the circumferential groove 78 in the hub of the worm 76. A leaf-spring 108 is secured to the actuatinglevcr, and the upper end thereof is bent at 109 in order that it may be seated in either one of the two angular depressions 110, formed in the arm 106. (See Fig. 7,) When the arm 106 is turned on its pivot to the full-line position represented in Fig. 7, it is thrown out of the groove 78 of the actuating-lever, and the locking mechanism as a whole is thus disconnected from the shaft 44. It will be understood that the spring 108 retains the arm 106 in either of the two positions to which itmay be movedthat is to say, either the full-line or dotted-line position represented in Fig. 7 and that when the arm is in the last-named position it is seated in its groove to connect the controllinglever with the shaft 44. 7
Upon reference to Fig. 10 it will be seen that an inking-ribbon 111 is provided, and it should be understood that the opposite ends of this ribbon may be connected to the ribbonspools. The inking-ribbon is one which may be divided into a plurality of fields having different characteristics at different portions in the length thereof. Thus the field a may be a copy-ribbon, whereas the field may be a record-ribbon. The different fields may be in a single continuous length of ribbon or may be two separate ribbons united by a pin 112 or otherwise at the inner ends thereof. In other words, two ribbons having different characteristics may be united at their inner ends and the outer ends of the united ribbons may be connected to the ribbon-spools. Should the operator desire to use the recordribbon or field a, for instance, it is merely necessary to bring that field to the printingcenter and to throw the arm 106 into the circumferential groove 78. The operator may .then proceed with the writing, and assuming that the bevel-pinion 42 is in mesh with its cooperating bevel-gear 41 of the right-hand ribbon-spool shaft (looking from the front of the machine) then the ribbon will be wound upon the right-hand spool until the reversing device on the left-hand spool drops to the position illustrated in Fig. 11. During the travel of the ribbon from the left-hand to the right-hand spool the shaft 44 will turn in the direction of the arrow indicated in Fig. 2, and the worm 76 at this time being in engagement with the segmental gear 87 willrcause it to be fed in the direction of the arrow on said segment. The threads on the worm and gear are such that it requires a feed movement of the ribbon throughout substantially the length of one of its fields a or Z) in order to bring about a complete movement of the segment from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that represented in Fig.3. Before the segment has reached the last-mentioned position the locking member 96 will be arrested by a stop 113, as indicated in- Fig. 3, and a continued feed movement of the ribbon will cause the segment to continue its movement in the direction of the arrow thereon in Fig. 2 until the arm 91 is brought to a substantially upright position beneath the arm 26 on the dog or escapement rocker. When the arm 91 has about assumed this position, the locking member will be freed from the stop 113 and will be forced by the spring 97 to the full-line position represented in Fig. 3, where it is maintained beneath the rockerarm 26, thereby preventing an actuation of the dog-rocker and preventing a depression of the finger-keys, thus automatically locking the entire machine out of operation. If the arm 26 should happen to be moving down when the locking element 96 is released, no injurious result will follow, since the part 96 will not interfere with the completion of the downward movement of the arm and will snap under it at the next upward movement of the arm and will lock the machine out of operation. The operator is thereby notified that an end of the field of the ribbon 111 which is in use has been reached, and the shaft is moved longitudinally through the finger-piece or crank 54 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3. The effect of this movement of the shaft 44 is to turn the controlling-lever 101 on its pivot by reason of the connection between the shaft and said actuating-lever through the arm 106. The movement just described of the controlling-lever shifts the roller 103, carried at the lower end thereof, from under the lowest position of the cam 104 to the position shown in Fig. 4, and the spring 98 depresses the frame to the position illustrated in Fig. 4, thereby disengaging the segmental teeth 88 from engagement with the worm 7 6, and the spring 89 will then turn the segment on its pivotal center 86 until the segment is arrested by the stop-pin 94 coming into contact with the frame 85. The disconnection of the locking device is thus automatically effected by a longitudinal movement of the shaft 44 in one direction, which movement likewise brings about a reversal in the direction of the feed of the ribbon. The ribbon will then continue to be wound upon the left-hand spool until the right-hand end of the ribbon is reached and the reversing device 67 drops to the operative position, as illustrated in Fig. 11. This will during the further operation of the machine bring about a longitudinal shift of the shaft 44, so as to again bring the pinion 42 into mesh with its gear 41. The effect of the longitudinal shift of the ribbon thus automatically produced is to move the controlling-lever 91 from a position substantially such as that shown in Fig. 4 to a position similar to that indicated in Fig. 2. This movement of the lever is effective to automatically bring about the engagement between the teeth 88 and the worm 76, when connection is again established, and the further rotation of the shaft 44 will cause the locking device to be fed in the direction of the arrow on the segment in Fig. 2 as before and until substantially onehalf of the entire length of the ribbon has been reached or until the end of the field a is approached, when the locking device will be automatically brought beneath the arm 26 of the dog-rocker, thus again locking the machine out of operation.
By providing an adjustable stop 94 I am enabled to position the stop in any one of the several apertures 93, and thus regulate the normal position of the locking device with reference to the frame 85, therebydetermining the extent of movement produced by the segment before the locking member 96 is brought to position to prevent a further operation of the machine. In this manner I am enabled to set the device for ribbons of different lengths and to always automatically lock the machine when a point located at, say, subis reached or when one end of the field in use is approached.
Should the operator at any time desire to dispense with the use of the automatic locking mechanism, it is merely necessary, as heretofore stated, to throw the arm'106 out of the circumferential recess 78, and the entire mechanism is thus disconnected and the ribbon may be fed from end to end, and the direction of feed thereof may be automatically reversed as each end is reached, so that, if desired, a single ribbon or a single field of the same character throughout instead of a plurality of fields having different characteristics may be used.
It will be observed that the locking mechanism of my invention is in the nature of an attachment and that it may be readily applied to an ordinary No. 6 Remington type-writing machine without modifying the structural features of such machine except to place the Worm 76 and its hub on the usual shaft 44 of said Remington machine.
Various changes in construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, which from certain aspects thereof contemplates the broad idea of the provision of a ribbon having a plurality of fields of dif-' 1. In a type-writing machine, the combination of means for feeding a ribbon in the direction of its length, and means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point of the ribbon intermediate of its ends is reached.
2. In a type-writing machine, the combination of means for feeding a ribbon in the direction of its length, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point of the ribbon is reached, and adjustable means for determining at what point in the travel of the ribbon the locking means shall be effective to lock the machine.
3. In a type-writing machine, the com bination of means for feeding a ribbon in the direction of its length, means for'automaticall y locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point of the ribbon intermediate of its ends is reached, and means for au tomatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a shaft for turning said spools, means for automatically changing the direction of rotation of the spools when one end of the ribbon is reached, and means cooperating with said shaft for automatically locking the machine out of operation before the other end of the ribbon is reached.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-shiftable and rotating shaft for turning said spools, means for automatically effecting a longitudinal movement of the shaft when one end of the ribbon is reached, and means for automatically locking the machine out of operation before the other end of the ribbon is reached.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-shiftable and rotating shaft for turning said spools, means for automatically effecting a longitudinal movement of the shaft when one end of the ribbon is reached, to reverse the direction of rotation of the spools and to change the direction of feed of the ribbon, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation before the other end of the ribbon is reached, and hand-operated means for shifting said shaft longitudinally and to release the locking means.
15. In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a longitudinally-movable shaft for controlling the feed of the ribbon, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation When a predetermined point in the ribbon is reached, and means controlled by the longitudinal movement of said shaft for alternately throwing said locking means into and out of operation.
16. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a longitudinally-movable shaft for controlling the feed of the ribbon, means for automatically reversing the direction of feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point in the ribbon is reached, and means controlled by the longitudinal movement of said shaft for alternately throwing said locking means into and out of operation.
17. In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a longitudinally-movable shaft for controlling the feed of the ribbon, means for automatically effecting a longitudinal movement of said shaft in one direction to reverse the direction of feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point in the ribbon is reached, and means controlled by the longitudinal movement of said shaft in the other direction to render the locking means operative.
18. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a locking device for locking the machine out of operation, means for feeding the ribbon, and gear connections for actuating said locking device.
19. In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a locking device for locking the machine out of operation, means for feeding the ribbon, gear connections for actuating said locking device, and means for throwing said gear connections out of operation.
20. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a locking device for locking the machine out of operation, means for feeding the ribbon, gear connections for actuating said locking device, and means for automatically throwing said gear connections out of operation.
21. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a locking device for locking the machine out of operation, means for feeding the ribbon, gear connections for actuating said locking device, and means for automatically and alternately throwing said gear connections into and out of operation.
22. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a locking device for locking the machine out of operation, means for feeding the ribbon, means for automatically changing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached, and gear connections between the ribbon-feed mechanism and said locking device.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, alongitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, means for automatically shifting said shaft longitudinally to effect a change in the direction of the feed of the ribbon, a locking device adapted to lock the machine out of operation, and gear connections between said shaft and said locking device.
30. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, means for automatically shifting said shaft longitudinally to effect a change in the direction of the feed of the ribbon, a locking device adapted to lock the machine out of operation, gear connections between said shaft and said locking device, and means controlled by the longitudinal movements of said shaft for throwing said gear connections into and out of operative relation.
31. In a type-writing machine, the combination of means for feeding a ribbon, a springpressed pivoted actuator, a locking device controlled by said actuator and adapted to lock the machine out of operation, and gear connections between said actuator and said ribbon-feeding means.
32. In a type-writing machine, the combination of means for feedinga ribbon, a springpressed pivoted actuator, a locking device controlled by said actuator and adapted to lock the machine out of operation, gear connections between said actuator and said ribbon-feeding means, and means for throwing said gear connections into and out of operative relation.
33. In a type-writing machine, the combi- 4 feed of the ribbon, a spring-pressed pivoted actuator. a locking device controlled by said actuator and adapted to lock the machine out of operation, gear connections between said actuator and said ribbon-feeding means, and means controlled by said ribbonreversing means for throwing said gear connections into and out of operative relation.
34. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbonspools, a longitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, the shaft being operatively connected to one ribbon-spool and disconnected from the other when the shaft is at the limit of its movement in either direction, a locking device controlled by said shaft and adapted to lock the machine out of operation, and means controlled by the longitudinal movement of said shaft for automatically throwing said locking device into and out of position to be operated, whereby when the shaft is at the limit of its movement in one direction the locking device will be thrown out of position to be actuated and when the shaft is at the limit of its longitudinal movement in the opposite direction, the locking device will be thrown into position to be actuated.
35. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, the shaft being operatively connected to one ribhon-spool and disconnected from the other when the shaft is at the limit of its movement in either direction, means for automatically moving the shaft longitudinally in one direction, hand-operated means for moving the shaft longitudinally in an opposite direction, a lockingdevice controlled by said shaft and adapted to lock the machine out of operation, and means controlled by the longitudinal movement of said shaft for automatically throwing said locking device into and out of position to be operated, whereby when the shaft is at the limit of its movement in one direction the locking device will be thrown out of position to be actuated and when the shaft is at the limit of its longitudinal movement in the opposite direction the locking device will be thrown into position to be actuated.
36. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, the shaft being operatively connected to one ribhon-spool and disconnected from the other when the shaft is at the limit of its movement in either direction, means for automatically moving the shaft longitudinally in one direction, hand-operated means for moving the shaft longitudinally in an opposite direction, a locking device adapted to lock the machine out of operation, cooperating gear connections between said shaft and locking device, and means controlled by the longitudinal movement of said shaft for automatically throwing said gear connections into and out of operative relation, whereby when the shaft is at the limit of its movement in one direction the locking device will be thrown out of position to be actuated by its gear connections, and when the shaft is at the limit of its longitudinal movement in the opposite direction the locking device will be thrown into position to be actuated by its gear connections.
87. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, a worm on the shaft, a locking device adapted to lock the machine out of operation, and having a gear that is adapted to mesh with said worm, and means for throwing the gear and worm into and out of mesh by a longitudinal movement of the shaft.
38. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, means for automatically effecting a longitudinal movement of said shaft when an end of the ribbon is reached, a worm on the shaft, a
locking device adapted to lock the machine out of operation, and having a gear that is adapted to mesh with said worm, and means for throwing the gear and worm into and out of mesh by a longitudinal movement of the shaft.
39. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, a worm on the shaft, a locking device adapted to lock the machine out of operation, and having a gear that is adapted to mesh with said worm, shifting means for throwing the gear and worm into and out of mesh by a longitudinal movement of the shaft, and means for rendering said shifting means inoperative.
40. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-feed mechanism, and means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point in the ribbon is reached, said locking means comprising a spring-pressed locking member, and
a positively-actuated carrier on which the spring-pressed locking member is movably mounted.
41. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-feed mechanism, and means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point in the ribbon is reached, said locking means comprising a spring-pressed locking member, and
a positively-actuated carrier on which the spring-pressed locking member is movably mounted, and a relatively fixed abutment with which the spring-pressed locking member is adapted to contact in its movement to the locking position.
42. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, a worm on the shaft, a locking device adapted to lock the machine out of operation and having a gear that is adapted to mesh with said worm, means for shifting the gear and worm into and out of mesh by a longitudinal movement of the shaft, and means for affording an adjustment of the locking device with reference to its shifting means.
48. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-mov able shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, a worm on the shaft, a locking device adapted to lock the machine out of operation, and having a gear that is adapted to mesh with said worm, and shifting means for throwing the gear and worm into and out of mesh by alongitudinal movement of the shaft, said shifting means comprising an arm that is adapted to be maintained in engagement with said shaft or to be thrown out of cooperation therewith.
L4. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-spools, alongitudinally-movable shaft for actuating said ribbon-spools, a worm on the shaft, a locking device adapted to lock the machine out of operation and having a gear that is adapted to mesh with said worm, shifting means for throwing the gear and worm into and out of mesh by a longitudinal movement of the shaft, and an arm which when moved to one position connects the looking means for automatic operation and which when moved to another position renders the locking means inoperative.
45. In a type-writing machine. the combination of ribbon-feed mechanism, means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point intermediate the ends of the ribbon is reached, and means for at will throwing the locking means out of operation.
46. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-feed mechanism, means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when either end thereof is reached, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point intermediate the ends of the rib bon is reached, and means for throwing the locking means into or out of operation.
47. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-feed mechanism, means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a predetermined point intermediate the ends of the ribbon is reached, adjustable means for determining what extent of travel of the ribbon may be afforded before the locking means are rendered eflective, and means for at will throwing the locking means out of operation.
48. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-feed mechanism, means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when the ribbon has traveled substantially one-half of the length thereof, and adjustable means cooperating with the locking means for affording the use of ribbons of different lengths and the automatic locking of the machine out of operation when substantially the central portion of the ribbon has been reached irrespective of the length of the ribbon.
49. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-feed mechanism, a feed-dog rocker, a locking device that is adapted to cooperate with the dog-rocker, and means for automatically moving the locking device into cooperation with the feed-dog rocker when substantially one-half of the ribbon is reached.
50. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-feed mechanism, a feed-dog rocker, a locking device that is adapted to cooperate with the dog-rocker, means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached,
and means for automatically moving the lockbon is reached.
51. In a type-writing machine, the combination of ribbon-feed mechanism, a feed-dog rocker, a locking device that is adapted to cooperate with the dog-rocker, means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached, means for automatically moving the locking device into cooperation with the feed-dog rocker when substantially one-half of the ribbon is reached, and means for throwing the moving means out of operation so as to render the locking means inoperative.
52. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage, ribbon-spools, a longitudinally-movable shaft, that controls the rotation of said ribbon-spools, the rotation of said shaft being controlled by the travel of the carriage, a dog-rocker, a locking device that cooperates with said dog-rocker, gears intermediate of said locking device and shaft for operating the locking device, and means for automatically effecting a longitudinal movement of the shaft when an end of the ribbon is reached.
58. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a ribbon having a plurality of fields of different characteristics at different portions in the length of the ribbon, and means for limiting the feed of the ribbon to one of said fields.
54. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a ribbon having a plurality of fields of different characteristics at different portions in the length of the ribbon, means for limiting the feed of the ribbon to one of said fields, and means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached.

Ina type-writing machine, the combination of a ribboh having a plurality of fields of different characteristics at different portions in the length ofthe ribbon, means for feeding said ribbon longitudinally in opposite directions, and means for restricting the feed of the ribbon to one of said fields.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of a ribbon havinga plurality of fields of different characteristics at different portions in the length of the ribbon, means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when one limit of one field of the ribbon is reached, and means for locking the machine out of operation when the other limit of said field of the ribbon is reached.

In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a ribbon having a plurality of fields of different characteristics at different portions in the length of the ribbon, means for limiting the feed of the ribbon to one of said fields, and means for throwing the limiting means into or out of operation at Will. 59. In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a ribbon having a plurality of fields of difierent characteristics at difierent portions in the length of the ribbon, means for limiting the feed of the ribbon to one of said fields, means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when an end thereof is reached, and means for throwing said limiting means into or out of operation at Will.

In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a ribbon having a plurality of fields of different characteristics at different portions in the length of the ribbon, means for automatically locking the machine out of operation when a limit of one of said fields is approached, and means for throwing said locking means into or out of operation at Will.

In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a ribbon having a plurality of fields of different characteristics at different portions in the length of the ribbon, means for feeding said ribbon longitudinally in opposite directions, means for restricting the feed of the ribbon to one of said fields, and means for throwing said restricting means into or out of operation at Will.

In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a ribbon having a plurality of fields of diiferent characteristics at different portions in the length of the ribbon, means for automatically reversing the direction of the feed of the ribbon when the limit of one field of the ribbon is reached, means for locking the machine out of operation When the other limit of said field is reached, and means for throwing said locking means into or out of operation at will.
