Wiizamar:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE NV. N. YOST, OF N E\V YORK, N.Y. ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE AMERICAN XVRITING MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
$PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,089, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed July 12, 1880. Serial No. 13,388.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that GEORGE \V. N. YOST. of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented Improvements in TypeVVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
llhe nature of that part of the invention whlch comprises the subject-matter of this application may be described asfollows: Heretofore numbering or hand stamps have been provided with two ribbon-spools, alternately wound and unwound automatically through mechanism connected with the stamping-lever, and type-writers have heretofore been provided with a letter-space ratchet on a vibratory frame, and combined with a ratchetwheel or with two racks arranged to slide one upon the other.
My improvement consists, mainly, in hav ing one of the racks pivoted to hangers, so as to swing against the side of a rigid rack.
My improvement consists, also, in thctwo ribbon-spools provided with ratchets and holding-pawls, in combination with the drivingpawls on each side of the letter-space vibratory frame, the adjusting-regulators, and their connectin g-rod, as will be herei 11 after described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine embodying the elements of the invention. Fig. 2 isa rear view of same. Fig. 3 is a front view with portions of the machine removed. F1gs. 4 to 8 are views of detached parts of the machine, indicated thereon by letters, which are referred to hereinafter.

G, a rightangled vibratory frame, hinged at the bottom (Modem and rear between the side plates, A, with one part extended toward the front under the keylevers C and the other part extended toward the top plate, A G", a bar on the fore end of the vibratory frame G, across under and up against the key-levers G; I, a ribbon-spool on an axle in bearings under each end of the top plate, A 1 an inking-ribbon on each ribbonspool l, and extended up and across over the top-plate orifice A and type-bars; I, a ratchetwheel on the axle of each ribbon-spool I; J, a vertical post on each side of the lower part of the vibratory frame G; J", a driving-ratchet hinged on the upper end of each vertical post J and extended into engagement with the contiguous ribbon-spool ratchet-wheel 1; J, an adjusting weight-arm on each ribbon-spooldriving ratchet J and extended toward the contiguous ratchet-wheel I; K, a holdingratchet hinged on each side plate, A, and extended into the teeth of the contiguous ribbon-spool ratchet-wheel 1"; K an adjusting weight arm on each ribbon-spool-holding ratchet K and extended toward the contiguous ratchet-wheel 1; K, an arm or lug parallel with the axis and extended out from each side of each ribbon-spool-holding ratchet K; L, an adjusting weight arm or regulatorhinged to each side plate, A, and extended up next to and parallel with the contiguous ribbonspool-holding ratchet K; L, a connecting-rod across over the type-key levers G in front of the type-bars and attached to the ribbon= spool ratchet-adjusting regulators L; M, a carriage over the top plate, A and on the rails A" A; M the front side bar of the carriage M, which is similar to the rear side frame thereof; M, a traveling wheel on the carriage front side bar, M, and extended down to and on the top plate front rail, A M slide-bearings in the carriage rear side frame, M, and on over the rear top-plate rail, A"; N, a cylindrical platen in hearings on the carriage M, across over the top -plate orifice A; N, a spur-wheel on the end of the platen N; P, a combined lever and handle pivoted to the carriage front side bar, M and curved with one end extended toward the rear and the other end down in front toward the key-levers C; P, a driving-ratchet pivoted on the upper ICO rigidly attached to the carriage rear side frame, M; R hangers pivoted to and extended down from near each end of the carriage rear side frame, M R, another toothed rack next to and like the first rack, R, and pivoted to the hangers R 11*, a spring attached at one end to the first toothed rack, R, and at the other to the second rack, R; S, a long rod in bearings and extended from front to rear under the bottom plate, A; T, a spring coiled upon rod S; S", along bar, something like a pendulum, pivoted to the hind end of the long rod S, and extended up abreast of the carriage M, and having a spring-tension toward the left; S", a pitmau-like connecting-bar pivoted to the carriage M and to the upper end of the pendulum-like bar S"; U, a holding'ratchet on the upper end of the right-angled vibratory frame G and extended into the toothed racks R R; U, a pivot in the vibratory frame ratchet U; U", a stop on the upper end of the vibratory frame G on one side and below the pivot of the ratchet U; V, a curved spring paper-guide around the front part of each end of the platen N; WV, a bar in bearings across between the side plates, A, in rear of the levers which operate the type-bars; \V", a vertical bar on each end of the pivoted cross-bar \V, and extended up to the ribbon-spools I; TV", a slot in the upper end of each vertical bar into which is extended a flange of the contiguous ribbon-spool I; X, a rod in bearings parallel with the key-levers O in one of the side plates, A, and extended through the contiguous vertical pivoted bar W Y, a crank on the hind end of the pivoted rod X, and Z an external screw-thread on the fore end of the crank-rod X, and through and within an internal screw-thread in the contiguous vertical hinged bar 7 As the depression and release of any typekey lever O or space-key lever H will vibrate the lower part of the vibratory frame Gr, so thereby it will vibrate the attached side posts, J, and driving-ratchets J which will turn the ribbon-spool ratchet-wheels each in turn, as one is thrown into and the other out of gear, and thereby turn the ribbonspools I and inkingribbon 1 In common type-writing machines the inking-ribbon is generally moved by transmitting mechanism connected directly with the carriage driving power. This, however, is cumbersome, and subject to considerable friction; but in the invention described herein the ribbon movement is actuated directly from the vibratory frame G, and has no connection with the carriagedriving power.
To move the ribbon I? in one direction, the ribbon-spool-driving ratchet J on the side of that direction must be put in gear with its contiguous ratchet-wheel I, and the opposite ratchet be put out of gear from its ratchetwheel, and the reverse to move the ribbon in the reverse direction. hen either weightarm or regulator L is turned and let fall toward the contiguous ratchet-wheel 1", the
weight-arms K and J of the contiguous holding-ratchet and driving-ratchet K and J 2 will throw the ratchetsinto the ratchet-wheel; but when turned the other Way and from the ratchet-wheel it will strike against the contiguous holding-ratchet lug K, and lift the ratchet up and away from the ratchet-wheel, and thereby the opposite side lug, K", of the same holding-ratchet K will strike against the contiguous driving-ratchet J, and lift that ratchet also up and away from the ratchetwheel.
The adjusting connecting-rod L is so set and attached to the regulators L that when moved horizontally in direction it will turn one down and the other up, and when moved in the reverse direction it will turn the other down and the one up. Thus the ribbon-spool ratchets may be adjusted by the horizontal movement of the ratchets connecting-rod so as to move the inking-ribbon in whichever direction desired.
The movement of the carriage if from right to left in writing only by a type-space or letter space distance at a time, and is called the letter-space movement. This movement is controlled by the combined apparatus of the right-angled vibratory frame G, the vibratory-frame-holding ratchet U, the toothed racks R R, and the carriage-driving power S T, and is called the letter-space appara tus, and the vibratory frame G is called the letterspace vibratory frame.
I reserve the right to make the features herein described, but not claimed, the subject of separate applications for Letters Patent.
The invention which is the subject-matter of this application, and what I claim herein, 1s
1. The combination of aletter-space vibratory frame, and a driving-ratchet on each side thereof, with a ratehet-wheel on each contiguous ribbon-spool axle.
