Be it known that I, MARTIN F. OnBBnoKn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cuff or Collar Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to so construct a collar or cuff button that the same can be securely attached to the buttonhole portion of the collar or cuii1 which has become so worn, frayed, or otherwise enlarged that it will not retain a buttoninserted in the same in the usual way. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, in which# Figure 1 a perspective view of a portion of a garment having a buttonhole therein and to which is applied a collar or cuff button constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of said collar or cuff button, showing the manner in which the same is applied to the buttonhole portion of the garment. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts of the button detached from each other, and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are views illustrating modifications of my invention.

When a buttonhole becomes worn, frayed, torn, or otherwise enlarged to a certain eX- tent, it will not retain a collar or cuff button inserted therein in the ordinary way, since either the head or the back of the button can be pulled through the buttonhole.

My invention comprises a collar or cuff button in which the head and back are separate from each other and are capable of being screwed together, so that a layer or layers of fabric provided with one or more buttonholes can be clamped between the two parts of the button, the latter thereby not only being securely clamped to and held in place upon the' fabric, but serving to securely confine together the plurality of layers when it is applied to overlapping portions of a garment and serving also at the same time to attach a collar, cuff, or the like to the garment in the same manner as an ordinary collar-button.

As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the head l of the button has a tubular shank 2, with expanded base 3, and the back of the button consists of a base 4 and a central upwardly-projecting stein 5, said stem being externally threaded for adaptation to a corresponding internal thread formed in the tubular shank 2 of the head member of the button. As the two parts of the button will usually be formed from gold or other soft metal, it is preferable to provide the hollow shank 2 with an internally-threaded sleeve 6, of iron, steel, or other harder metal, an externally-threaded sleeve 7 being applied to the central stem or shank 5 of the back of the button, so that the threads will resist the wear caused by frequent connection and separation of the two parts of the button. The expanded base 3 of the tubular shank 2 flares outwardly and downwardly, and the back 4C of the button has a central concave recess and upturned edge flange 9, which is preferably milled or roughened on its inner face, as shown at 10. By reason of this construction the back 4 of the button is thin throughout all portions of the same beyond the central stem, and hence is elastic, so that when the pressure of the downwardly and outwardly flaring base 3 of the shank is exerted upon the fabric to press it upon the milled edge of the back the latter can, owing to its resiliency, yield to accommodate inequalities of the fabric. Hence a close grip of the latter between the outer edge of the base 3 and the milled edge of the back 4 is insured, as shown in Fig. 2.

When the improved button is not intended to be used in place of an ordinary collar-button, the shank 2 need not be as long as in an ordinary collar-button, as it will not have to accommodate as `may layers or thicknesses of fabric as a collar-button applied in the ordinary way.

Various methods of constructing the twopart collar or cuff button in accordance with my invention will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 I have shown several modified constructions. The button shown in Fig. 4 has a thread cut directly upon the central stem or post 5, which projects from the back disk 4 of the button, and the head portion of the button has -an internal thread cut directly in the tubular stem or shank 2, while the button shown in Fig. 5 has each of its parts composed of iron, steel,

or other relatively hard sheet metal, coated or covered externally with gold or other noncorrosive metal, and in Fig. 6 I have illustrated a construction in which the central threaded stem or post 5 instead of being integral with the disk 4 oi' the rear member of the button is secured to said disk by passing the reduced end of the said stem or post through a central opening in the disk and then upsettingor riveting the same on the outer face of the. disk.

Having th us described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A collar or cui button comprising a back member with enlarged and elastic base having an upturned peripheral Harige, a head member comprising a head, a shank, and adownwardly and outwardly flaring base between whose outer edge and the inner face only of the upturned peripheral flange of the back the fabricl is coniined, and means for connecting said head member to the back member of the button, substantially as specified.
