SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent .llfl'o. 79%,061, dated July 4, 1905. Application tiled 'tloveniher 1, 1904.- Serial No. 231,035.
To rt/Z whom, it many concern:
Be it known that we, Fence Vmtmuo, residing at St. Claude, .iura, ltrance, and i l [AU- Iuon fri'ruAUss, residingat London, hinglaml, citizens of the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful linprovemon ts in Elastic it loiirthpicces; and we do declare the following" to he a hill, clear, and exact description oFthe invention, such as will enahle others skilled in the art to which itappcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tohaccwpipes or cigar-holders, and more particularly to mouthpieces for this character of goods.
The object of this invention is to provide an elastic or resilient mouthpiece for tohaccrr pipes and the like for the purpose of preserving the teeth of the smoker and at the same time to give a very firm hold of the teeth upon the mouthpiece without an excess ive grip of the teeth. An elastic mouthpiece for a tobacco-pipe is a very desirable feature, for the reason that a very slighthold upon the mouthpiece without setting the teeth lirmly thereon will hold the pipe in place without inji'lriously affecting the teeth o l the smoker.
in the accompanying d rawings, which form part of this specification, we have illustrated an ordinary tohaccoqiipe provided with our improved mouthpiece. it will he umlerslmod, oil course, that such a mouthpiece may he ap plied to pipes oi various kinds or to cigarholders, cigarette-liolders, and the like.
.lliigure l is a central longitudinal section through a pipe provided with a mouth iiiece made in accordance with our present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view oi? a mouthpiece of slightlyanodilied form, and ilig. 3 is an end View of the mouthpiece.
lteferring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, the numeral '1 denotes the howl of the pipe, which may he 0 l ordinary construction. 'ihemouthpiece 2 may he litted to the stem portion of the howl in any suitahlemanner and a smokeduct 2-3 extends through the n'ionthpiece, the howl-stem, and into the howl in the usual manner.
Our n'u'iuth 'iiece 2 may he made oi? vulcan- 5o ized ruhher or other suitahle material having resilient inherent elasticity or resiliency suilicient to give the required yielding character to the month end of said IDOilhllPlUCO. As shown in Fig. i, an open slot at is Formed in the outer end of the mouthpiece, said slot extending into the mouthpiece a suliicient distance to render the two halves or sections 5 elastic or yielding, so that when titliOl'l between the teeth of the smoker and but slightly gripped the pipe will he [irmly held between the teeth. As seen in Fig. 3, the slot at extends entirely across the mouthpiece and the heads or nihs 6 are tapered olit' toward the sides of the slot 4c of. the resilient sec- 5 tions 5. As shown in liig. 2, the slot t is oi substantially W shape, and this construction may he resorted to when the material from which the mouthpiece is made is comparatively inelastic or non-yielding.
From the lbregoing it will be obvious that our nuiiuthpiece may he held between the teeth without excessive pressure and that a person with sensitive teeth will liud great comfort in the use ol such a pipe or month- 75 piece.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may he resorted to without departing from the prin ciple or sacrificing; any of the advantages of 30 this invcl'ition.
