IMPROVEMENT IN ANDIRONS AND FIBEPLAES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC PASSY, of. Paris, France, have invented an Improvement in Andirons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description o t the same. i
My invention consists of andirons, having channels for the passage of air, which, after being heated by contact with the heated portions of the andirons, is discharged into the apartment.
In order Ato enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now'proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the. accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specication, en d in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a fireplace, with my improved audirons arranged therein.
Figure 2, a plan view, partly in section.
`l'igiure, a sectional elevation on the line 1-2, iig. 1.
Figures 4 and 5, detached views, drawn to a reduced scale; and
Figure 6, a front view of a fireplace, having modified forms of andirons.
E, gs. 1, 2, and 3, is an andiron, consisting, in the present instance, of a Siphon-like metal tube, which is arranged within a replace, so that the branches, e e', shall be parallel to the heu-th,- the curved l portion of the tube being nearest the back of thc fireplace, and the upper branch, el, communicating with the inclined p ortion, e2, of the tube, which projects into the apartment, as shown in the drawing.
The lower branch, e, rests upon the hearth, and supports the fuel, and the lower stratum of air in the apartinent, entering the tube E through the end of the branch e, traverses the latter, the bent portion'e", and the branch el, from which it ows to the inclined portion e2, and passes. thence, in a highlyheated state, into the apartment.
Instead of a bent tnbe,'E, the andiron may consist of a cast-metal piece, E, and an upright pipe, d, the piece El having channels, a a', communicating at the back of the fireplace, lthrough a bent tube, C, the channel -a communicating also with the pipe el', and the channel a having its mouth'near the level of the hearth, as
shown in the drawing.
Registers may be placed both at thc points where the air enters the and rons and where itleaves them, and an urn, E2, or other receptacle for water, may be placed at the upper end of the andiron, as shown in iig. 6, so that the air, beforo leaving the andiron, shall pass in contact with the receptacle, and hea-t its contents.
I'claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An andiron, having channels or passages, arranged substantially as described, so that a current of air from the lower portion oi the apartment in which the andiron is placed shall pass into and through the andiron, and be discharged into the apartment in a heated state, as specified.
2. The combination oi the above and a water-receptacle, arranged upon the upper end of the andiron', as and for the purpose described. Y
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribngwitncsses.
FREDERIC PASSY.
