Description

ROBERT H. LECKY, OF. ALLEGHENY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 92,617, dated July 13, 1869; anteclated June 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXHAUST-DEVICE FOR LOCOMOTIVE SMOKE-ST-ACHS.
The Schedule referred to kin. these Letters Patent and making part of the same. i
1 To all whom it may concern Be it vknown that I, ROBERT H. LEGKY, of the city and county of Allegheny, in the State Of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Steam-Exhaust for Locomotive-Chimneys and Flucs, and l. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tO the letters of reference marked thereon. f
'Ihe nature ,of my invention consists in providing the exhaust-blast pipe of a locomotive with a station- V'ary centre-piece, and with a movable sleeve on the blast-pipe; said centre-piece and 4sleeve being'so constructed and arranged with relation to each other that the force of the blast maybe regulated to any degree desired.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specificationl Figiu'e lis a front elevation of my improvement in blast-pipe, 0r steam-exhaust, for locomotive-chimneys.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same..
lu' the drawings- A is a bell-mouth sleeve, which is arranged on the upper branch vof an ordinary blast-pipe, C, of a locomotive-chimney or stack, (which is represented by dotted lines in iig. 2.)
This sleeve A is provided with two or more slots, D, in which is placed a pin, i, secured in the pipe C.
To one side of the sleeve A is attached armf, to
which is attached a lever leading to the engineer, and so vairanged that said lever'will move theann f back and forward, for the purpose of turning the sleeve A, which turning will raise or lower the sleeve, through the medium of the slots D and pins i.'
By raising and lowering the sleeve A, the annular opening around the centre-piece B may be increased or diminished at will, and thereby increase or diminish the forceof the blast.
The centre-piece B (the form of which is clearly indicated in iig. 2) is held in the desired position by means of rods e, which should be attached to the pipe G, and so arranged as to hold the centre-piece B eentrai to the Openlng of the upper branch of the pipe C.
An opening is made in the centre of the centrepiece B, so that by and through the centre Openings of piece B, and the annular opening around it,'a side and centrecurrents are createdin the stack.
- The ends O of the pipe O are attached to the exhaust-pipes of the engines in the usual manner.
What I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is'- The combination of the sleeve A with the inverted cone B, said sleeve and cone being constructed and arranged with relation to each other substantially as Witnesses: A. C. J OHNsTON,
GEO. H. THOMAS.
