' Beit known that I, GEORGE W. HECKART, of Columbiana, in the county of Columbiana, und State of Ohio, have invent-ed a-new and useful Improvement in Haines-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is :t full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the' accompanying drawings, und to the letters and-figures ofreference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention-consists in providing a hames-couplng with two pnwls, which are held ,in con.

tact with'the teeth of the ratchet part of the coupling by means of a spring or springs, the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner hereinafter described. I

To enable others skilled in the art to make and dse my invention, I will proceed to describe its'construction and operation.

In' the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improvement in coupling for hnmes.

Figure 2 is 'a side view of the same. v

Figure 3 represents the coupling when'plaeed on' the homes. In the drawings, A represents the case of the coupling, which is provided with a hook, B. Between the sides o of the case A are pivoted, at 2, two pawls,f'andf, which are, by means of n spiral spring, 2:, held in contact with the teeth e of the ratchet C, placed between the sides o of the case A, above the pawlsfandf, us shown in fig. 1. The' ratchet C is provided with a. hook, DQ The case, A, ratchet C, and pawlsfand ff, may be made of wrought liron or malleable iron.

As the construction and arrangement of my improved coupling will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, I will, therefore, proceed to describe its operation.

The case A is hooked on one part of the haines, and the ratchet C is hooked on the other part. The fingerpieces g and g are pressed together, and 'the ratchet C is forced into case A, so as to draw the hames into the desired position on the horse-collar. The pawls ur'e then released, and the spiral spring :c will force the pawls against the ratchet, so that they will catch in its teeth e, as shown in iig'. 1. I 'lhe advantages ofthe two pawlsfaudf, in combination with the ratchet C, are, that, should one of them become unshipped from any cause, the other pawl will hold the case A und the ratchet C together, und thereby prevent the llames frombecoming uncoupled.
